Elton John / Diamonds

Does this new hits set sparkle?

A new Elton John greatest hits collection Diamonds will be issued in November, with a limited box set also available.

The compilation will be available in three physical formats: a two-CD set, a triple CD limited edition box set and a 2LP gatefold vinyl package.

The three-CD deluxe format (51 tracks) includes a bonus CD “personally curated by Elton” and includes a 72-page hardcover book with words by Elton and Bernie Taupin and track-by-track notes on every song. You also get a series of postcards in a card wallet. The box (pictured above) looks like the standard Universal Music style box set (like the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road deluxe)

The two-CD set (34 tracks) comes in standard jewel case packaging with a 16-page booklet while the 180g double vinyl package comes with printed inner sleeves and a download code. The vinyl has the fewest number of tracks at 21.

Diamonds will be released on 10 November 2017.

David

This needs a 24bit Hi-Res digital release!

James

What no Levon???? Anyway I’ll pass on this rehash.

Doug Hegle

I recommend soending the $$$ on the 5.1 surround sound audio DVD of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road… Its an amazing treat for your ears… The mix is fantastic

MARK LEVY

As far as vinyl goes, I tracked down a 180g version of the 1990s compilation The Very Best Of Elton John from 2014. A much better substitute and more tracks for your bucks!

Andy Sodergren

This doesn’t even round up all the hit singles (which to truly do that for Elton, you may have to go to a fourth disc). Such Top 40 hits like In Neon, Who Wears These Shoes, Wrap Her Up, Club at the End of the Street, A Word in Spanish, Bite Your Lip, Ego, just to name a few, were left off. Either they make it a true comprehensive “hits” collection or they go the Pure McCartney route where you have the biggest hits along with a sampler of Elton’s favorite tunes in a four or five disc set. This set really does neither.

Allen Chapman

I am listening to this now. They tracks sound, at least to me, to have been either remixed or maybe just remastered. I’m hearing little things here and there that I’ve never really noticed before.
I’m a sucker for these kinds of releases. Doesn’t matter that I have nearly everything on this on other collections or albums.

Mike Williams

Best Buy in the U.S. has a 17-track single CD version:
Your Song
Tiny Dancer
Rocket Man
Crocodile Rock
Daniel
Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Candle in the Wind
Bennie and the Jets
Philadelphia Freedom
Island Girl
Don’t Go Breaking My Heart
Mama Can’t Buy You Love
I’m Still Standing
I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues
Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me
Can You Feel the Love Tonight

Gis Bun

Another EJ compilation. And 3 CD releases. Seriously? To buy the sing CD release for a guy with almost 50 years of music is ridiculous.
If EJ curated the third CD, who did the first 2? Why didn’t he? It’s his music.

MARK LEVY

I was looking forward to a good Elton John best of on new vinyl, if the version of Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me hadn’t been swapped, I would have been tempted. The Very Best Of Elton John is a good substitute.

elliott buckingham

the 1990 dbl cd set hasn’t yet been beaten for tracklisting I goor remastered reissue of that would be better and add tiny dancer to it

Mike Williams

Since no one else has mentioned it, I always liked the single “Someday Out Of The Blue” from “The Road To El Dorado”. There is an Elton-Animated video of this great track that can be found online…

Herman Bulten

Nice for a beginner. But it could be great if they put a DTS HD Master 5.1 audio blu ray was included, then it would be great with all the 51 songs on it !

Kwc

Where is all that i’m allowed ?
I also agree this should have included b, sides & rarities.

Derek Langsford

The 5.1 SACDs were excellent. Was saddened they stopped the series. They should have started with the Greatest Hits compilations in 5.1 to create interest for the albums in 5.1. But that was not to be.

Charlie Waffles

This is a poor collection, Reg. You have way more better songs that are not being included. I will pass.

Mick

Add me to the list of those who clamor for a CD release of 17-11-70+.
I’m also still (un)patiently waiting for “Don’t Shoot Me…” and “Caribou” to finally get SACD hybrid releases.
That said – this set looks like a nice collectible, and a great Christmas gift for the Elton fan in Your life.
I’m curious…would the download code from the LP version mirror the LP tracklisting, or that of one of the CD configurations?

David Kelly

What we really need is a multi disc version of “Live In Australia” with complete audio and all available video. I think they shot some film at another concert, if I remember watching the complete broadcast years ago and in the closing parts Elton was in a different suit. Also Rare Masters Vol Two could mop up a lot of b sides and remixes.

Bob

Wouldn’t expect anything better from Universal ! It’s a mess along with thier archive lol. Haven’t a clue what they got… Especially contracts …

Should be a complete box set with 1 or 2 discs each for the 70’s,80’s ,90’s and 00’s. All single edits or do 12″ versions. None of this tosh.

Chris Squires

The loss for me here is the meagre 21 tracks on the Vinyl edition.. I think the Phil Collins singles box and Pure McCartney was the right way to do it.

If you have 2CD and 3/4CD versions the Vinyl should, as an absolute minimum, have the same set as the 2CD. This Vinyl is 13/30 tracks short of each CD variant.

[…] The news yesterday that Universal will issue yet a new Elton John compilation (called Diamonds) signified the start of the run up to Christmas and probably the first of many time-honoured ‘best of’ collections are that are now waiting in the wings. […]

Jim

Agree with a much earlier comment that this is for fans who have lost another GH somewhere along the way, or who will want to gift this for someone. Let’s face it even the most obsessive fan would tire of listening to this if every single 7 inch was included. Its a great compilation. My 2 cents – would love to see Crystal and the title track from Too Low For Zero get included. Both were huge radio hits in Australia and i think Crystal was actually a single in this territory.

Smeery

Another Greatest Hits compilation with the obvious selections how about a trawl through the BBC archives? Release Live ‘In Concert’ cds periodically and a 3cd set of studio takes for the true collector
Come on Reg get trawlling?

MARK LEVY

Why on earth has Elton opted for the duet version of Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me with George Michael instead of the original version?

MARK LEVY

No idea!

Phil Fogel

I’d love the book but CD 3 is very disappointing. Where is Healing Hands, or Mona Lisa & Mad Hatters part 1 &2 which are 2 of his best tracks. Club At The End Of The Street? Made In England? or Something from Captain & The Kid from 2006?

Francis

Oh wow, I have noticed that ‘This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore’ is included. Even so, I still will not be purchasing the collection.

Francis

I would have preferred a bigger box set with more CDs because there are loads of singles missing – The first and original version of ‘Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me’ (so much better than the later re-recorded version with George Michael), ‘Bite Your Lip (Get Up And Dance)’, ‘Crazy Water’, ‘Sartorial Eloquence (Don’t You Want To Play This Game No More)’, ‘Harmony’, ‘Dear God, ‘Nobody Wins’, ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’, ‘Princess’, ‘Cold As Christmas (In The Middle Of The Year)’, ‘Who Wears These Shoes’, ‘Passengers’, ‘Act Of War’ (with Millie Jackson), ‘Wrap Her Up’, ‘Breaking Hearts’, ‘Slow Rivers’ (with Cliff Richard), ‘Cry To Heaven’, ‘Heartache All Over The World’, ‘Town Of Plenty’, ‘A Word In Spanish’, ‘Healing Hands’, ‘Club At The End Of Our Street’, ‘You Gotta Love Someone’, ‘Easier To Walk Away’, ‘Runaway Train’ (featuring Eric Clapton), ‘Simple Life’, ‘The Last Song’, ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ (with RuPaul), ‘Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing’ (with Marcella Detroit), ‘Made In England, ‘ Please’, ‘Recover Your Soul’, ‘Candle In The Wind’ (re-recorded 1997 version), If The River Can Bend’, ‘I Want Love’, This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore’, ‘Your Song’ (with Alessandro Saffina), ‘Turn The Lights Out When You Leave’, ‘Flames Of Paradise’ (Jennifer Rush with Elton John), ‘Through The Storm’ (Aretha Franklin featuring Elton John). – If all these tracks had been included I would have purchased the collection but as they are not I will be giving it a miss and buying his CD albums and CD singles instead to get them.

bob

I Want Love is included, and to be fair this is a greatest hits album, most of those songs were minor hits

Francis

I, and I am sure many others also, want minor hits as much as greatest hits.

Francis

Okay, “I Want Love” is included, but I want all the others too, minor hits or not.

Bryan

You missed off the US single “Chloe”…! But great list none the less, and one I agree with.

Roel Glas

As others have said, still waiting on deluxe editions of Madmen, Honky Chateau & Don’t Shoot Me… and an updated …To Be Continued… and continuation of the SACD’s.
I would jump at this compilation if it had the “Friends” single on it. Still have the original DJM 7″. Quite a big hit in Oz at the time

Neil

Where’s our Rare Masters Vol. 2? Where’s our To Be Continued 2 (he literally promised it would be continued)? Where the Madman Deluxe Edition? Where are the BBC sessions? Where are the DJM demos? What about a live show from 1971 / 1972?

I would spend my last pound on this stuff if Elton could bring himself to release anything outside of the same old same old. How is it that I can be disappointed and yet utterly unsurprised at the same time?

Daniel ( from Berlin )

i met elton john only one time at a book release party he gave for
over 20 “bel-ami” boys. he adored them in 2003. he was nice but more
interested in the boys like me – i was there because my publisher released the “bel-ami” books
at this time and had the opportunity to bring some guys / stuff also to that party. crazy party!!
later he signed ( in 2008 ) my book – with works inspired by his songs and combined with parts of his lyrics – with some lovely words.
i remember that i asked my publisher in 2006 about if elton john would like my book or not
and the publishing director said to me: “he will love it! elton is a bitch!”

AlexKx

Dude, that’s freaking awesome!!! I absolutely love you all’s work!!!! You are a hero of mine! I think I know who you are (just as a fan; we’ve never met) but you all are some of the most beautiful guys created by God! I am so proud of you all! I am so thankful for the great work (photos, film) that you all have done! Truly glorious and special! You all do such a great job performing as well so it’s not just you all’s beauty! Wonderful!

Alastair

Still hoping for a CD version of 17-11-70+

Robert

I agree, this album must be released on CD. I like to know why they are waiting so long to release this on CD ?

Jonas

I also agree, I’d love to have 17-11-70+ on CD!

CJ

I might go for it. If I do, it will be for the three disc, since that actually has some o fmy favorite songs on it.

Does he just hate “In Neon”? I remember that one being on the radio almost constantly when I was a kid. I thought it was a hit, but maybe our local DJ just really liked it.

I want b-sides and remixes and unreleased material. There comes a point with some artists where Greatest Hits sets cross the line from redundant into excessive and then into annoying.

Randy Metro

I am an Elton fan but I have never met an Elton remix/extended version that I liked. I’ve become old skool and have begun to like songs that are short & concise. Not edits, but as the song was presented in it’s album version. I was surprised to see how albums in the 50’s & 60’s would be 15 minutes to a side. A lot of Elvis’ songs , amongst others, were under 2 minutes. Yeah, I know, it’s not the 5o’s or 60’s anymore; but I’m kind of an archeologist exploring the evolution of rock & pop music.

Larry Davis

Nice rehash… That’s all I have to say…looks like an updated GH 1970 – 2002, sorta…if the TBC box was 4 discs up thru 1990, this surely coulda been 6 discs…TBC updated… Elton has a huge catalogue, much of it obscure, some rarities still not on CD… I have Rare Masters…that’s a keeper…will rebuy TBC as well…and the new triple cheap…

Ian Burgess

I have it all. Several times over. Don’t need this release.

Could do with a set – 2/3/4/cd in box book or whatever containing all the non-album stuff. 12″ remixes / extended. B sides, charity / compilation / soundtrack album contributions etc

The non-album album!

Matthew Langhorn

Anybody would think Christmas is coming!

peter m

Glad to see little jeannie on a uk best of
Usually found on American versions, I think it’s one of his best.

RobDeighton

Should be called ‘Reg holds back’. There’s so much he could with his back catalog – yet we are spoon fed the same old stuff

Kevin

As far as I’m concerned, nothing tops the 1992 remasters, with the 1995/96 remasters coming in second (although there was some brickwalling, it wasn’t excessive, and at least Gus Dudgeon was involved). I’d rather see a proper compilation of the classic 1970s b-sides—basically Rare Masters without the Friends soundtrack and demos.

Louise

Love Elton but don’t get the point behind this, other than a stop gap between albums. Anyone who’s a real fan will have these already numerous times, other than maybe the Pnau track and a couple of more recent ones. A nice “rarities” type collection would be better, there must be loads in the vault, 12 inch mixes etc… come on Elton!

AlexKx

O.k. maybe I should not have said or described it as “generic”. No “music home video” companion disc? No new songs?

AlexKx

How is this different from “Greatest Hits 1970-2002”?! It IS generic though the book and artwork looks nice.

Simonf

Utterly uninspiring sleeve, and although the first disc is all good, it starts rapidly falling apart by halfway through disc two. Think I’ll stick with my double vinyl The Very Best Of Elton John (1990) which I found in a charity shop for just 50p some years ago!
Speaking of singles collections, I do hope Paul that you will be bigging up the forthcoming The Fall – Singles 1978-2016; seven discs of Fall mightiness, with all 7″ A and B sides in correct chronological order courtesy of Cherry Red. That’s how to do a singles collection: Elton et all, take note.

EW99

I am definitely looking forward to that Fall set.

Randy Metro

SimonF: I have the 2CD The Very Best of Elton John with the blue cover and Elton with a tasseled (?) hat from 1990. A few months ago I played it and there was some CD rot or something. The last couple songs on each CD were playable but had a lot of surface noise and skips. Have you listened to yours recently???

SimonP

Is CD 3 the one he curated? If so he has terrible taste. Now I think about it, that last sentence might be the world’s stupidest edition of statin’ the bleedin’ obvious!

Jack Rabbit

Is it just a coincidence that Elton has “curated” a disc that contains all the sizable hits that aren’t on the 2 CD version?

The only deep cut there is Victim Of Love, a song Elton holds in such high regard that in the hundreds of concerts he has played since its release he has never felt the urge to perform.

John Barleycorn

It’s all a little bit done to death now but the deluxe version with the hardback book would be value at around £25 approx. Not at £38. Hopefully in time patience will be rewarded…
I got the 4-disc Pure McCartney set for £20 eventually (thanks, SDE Paul) and I really like it, discovered loads of tracks I hadn’t come across before. This track list offering from Elton is more formulaic.

Andrew r

Why no Bowie like retrospective? he must have enough back catalogue
to justify A 5 years like box set . empty sky through to goodbye yellowbrick is a hell of a run!
I Will start the naming 5 years (take me to the pilot) any takers?

Randy Metro

I’m Gonna Be A Teenage Idol from Don’t Shoot Me……

Ty Tudor

Im in.
For me, ‘Home Again’ is perhaps the most over looked track of recent years.
Thankfully this sing is on both editions.

Ty Tudor

Paul, you have been very very busy recently with this superb website.
I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say thank you.

I wondered – is there a chance you can tell us a bit more about yourself – and your personal music collection?
Best and apologies ;)
Tyrone

jim vandegrift

Great idea Ty .Second that thought

Charles Christopher

Shouldn’t that be the “fewest” tracks, not “least” tracks?
Sorry, the communications major in me is dying inside.

Kevin

Must try fewer..

Daniel ( from Berlin )

Start the re-releases of his 80’s albums with all b-sides and 12″ mixes!!
this compilation is boring!

David Perry

I am not seeing Kiss the Bride on the LP.

What a miss!

Catweazle

Boring.
