The Orb and David Gilmour / Metallic Spheres in Colour

Remixed collaborative album

Metallic Spheres, The Orb’s 2010 collaboration with Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour has been remixed and reimagined for a reissue which will be called Metallic Spheres in Colour.

The original album featured Youth, who also produced the record and speaking about this reissue he says “The idea for Metallic Spheres In Colour, was that Alex Paterson could have done more on the first version, and he didn’t really have the opportunity because we had a philosophy of making the music like the Blade Runner soundtrack meets Wish You Were Here. So, I asked him why don’t we remix it and make it like an Orb classic? And in doing that, it’s almost like a completely different album.”

The new album is available on CD and vinyl. It has just two tracks which span around 20 minutes each and are therefore on each side of the vinyl record.

Metallic Spheres in Colour will be released on 29 September 2023 via Sony Music

What a missed opportunity, the original album came with a 3D mix in stereo.
A chance to Atmos this up Blu ray or even a 5.1 DVD and gove the album the full immersive sound ot deserves and really was designed for !!!

Dolby Atmos release happening too. it’s on Gilmour website. streaming only

Can’t help feeling that lack of a coloured vinyl option is a missed opportunity.

For UK punters, vinyl is a much more reasonable £23 + change at Burning Shed although postage obvs.

This title would have been ripe for a 5.1 /immersive audio release especially when you consider that the 2cd Deluxe version of the original album contained a bonus disc which had all the tracks recorded using 3D60 Audio which claimed to have better 3 dimensional sound from 2 channels.

No Blu Ray, no sale! If the Atmos mix is only available through streaming, they ain’t getting my money. Depressingly becoming more and more common these days. This has got SDE exclusive written all over it, Paul.

Rorschach, I’m sure Paul already thought of that…

I’m sure you didn’t intend it this way, but posts like this read as if Paul can just decide to issue any album he fancies under the SDE banner. I’ve a feeling it might be just a little more complicated than that …

This is one of those albums I wished I enjoyed more. I like it, but don’t love it and with my obsession with Ambient music & Pink Floyd instrumentals (not to mention WYWH being my #1 album of all time and Blade Runner being top 10 soundtracks) it should have been a slam dunk for me but just wasn’t. Hopefully this one will be and I look forward to picking it up.

No sign of the “headphone mix” disc this time around though?

I just saw “360RA” noted as a streaming choice on Pink Floyd Instagram post…

I rather like this album … streamed it just last week. And now that I have a turntable, the vinyl option is rather nice to have.

I liked the original album and I’d buy this at a sensible price. The current £21 for the CD is way too high.

SDE Fanatic

It’s £12.99 on Amazon UK – but not yet showing up on Paul’s widget.

Thank you!

Fair enough. Metallic Spheres was a huge let down for me – though released for a good cause.

what was the good cause? would love to know. thx

I wish they’d stuck to the original Blade Runner idea.
