The Blue Aeroplanes / Magical Realism

A Blue Aeroplanes‘ anthology is set for release in January. Spanning 1985 to 2025, Magical Realism: The Best of The Blue Aeroplanes has been curated by the band and features tracks from across their career. 

A stalwart of Bristol’s alternative music scene since their formation in 1981, across their 13 studio albums, The Blue Aeroplanes have influenced many other post-punk and alternative bands throughout the 80s and 90s, including Radiohead, the Manic Street Preachers, and R.E.M.. They released their debut, Bop Art, in 1984 on their own Party Records, quickly followed by Tolerance in 1985 and Spitting Out Miracles in 1987.

1990 saw the band sign to Ensign (Chrysalis in the US) and release the well-received Swagger, followed a year later by Beatsongs, which would prove to be the band’s highest charting album, reaching number 33 in the UK Album Chart. The band would change labels and lineups throughout the nineties and into the noughties, but would continue to record, as well as playing live, including support slots for R.E.M. and Siouxsie and the Banshees. 

This collection is available in both 2LP vinyl and CD, both remastered by Phil Kinrade. Both formats receive bonus tracks ‘Showing Off to Impress the Girls’ from pre-Blue Aeroplanes group Art Objects, and ‘I Will Love You’ an exclusive demo of a new track, although on 2LP these tracks come as a bonus seven-inch. The CD omits ‘Season Ticket To A Bad Place’ and ‘Warhol’s Fifteen (Live)’ both of which are included on the double vinyl.

Magical Realism: The Best of The Blue Aeroplanes: 1985 – 2025 will be released on 24 January 2025 via Chrysalis Records.
