Foreigner are to release a 4CD+blu-ray box set of their 1981 album 4 in September.

Produced by Mutt Lange, 4 reached No 1 in the US as well as No 5 in the UK, spawning US Top 10 singles ‘Urgent’ and ‘Waiting For A Girl Like You’, the latter also making No 8 in Britain.

The deluxe box set is, surprisingly, the first expanded edition of the album. It includes a new stereo mix, four previously unreleased songs, 14 early and alternative versions, 15 instrumental mixes, plus 15 live tracks recorded on the ‘4’ tour in Birmingham, Germany and Anaheim. A single black vinyl LP edition also utilises the new stereo remix.

One of the previously unreleased songs on the box, ‘Fool If You Love Him’, was unfinished during the 4 sessions, but has now been completed with a new verse written and sung by Lou Gramm.

The live tracks include a live version of ‘Hot Blooded’ recorded in Anaheim which was previously released on the B-side of fifth single ‘Luanne’. It featured on the original version of 1982 singles compilation Records but was dropped from later versions, to be replaced by the original 1978 studio version of ‘Hot Blooded’. This is the first release of its live take since Records.

The Blu-ray has no visual material, but includes a new Dolby Atmos mix, as well as the stereo remix from CD1 and a stereo remix of ‘Fool If You Love Him’. Who did the Atmos Mix is unknown, although SDE can confirm it wasn’t Steven Wilson!

The reissue of 4 coincides with a US tour. It features original Foreigner singer Gramm, as well as Kelly Hansen, Gramm’s replacement since 2005. However, lead vocals will be by newcomer Luis Maldonado. It’s Hansen’s final tour for Foreigner, whose most recent studio album was 2009’s Can’t Slow Down.

4 is reissued on 12 September, via Rhino.
