Tommy, The Who’s fourth studio album, will be released as an SDE exclusive blu-ray audio, in December.
Issued in May 1969, the double album is of course an early ‘rock opera’, one that tells the story of the fictional Tommy Walker and his path to becoming a spiritual leader and messianic figure. Tommy features the singles ‘Pinball Wizard’, ‘I’m Free’ and ‘See Me, Feel Me’ (which isn’t listed as a track on the album because it’s derived from ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’).
The album was acclaimed by critics and was performed live (to further acclaim) on the subsequent Who tour which included historic appearances at Woodstock, the Isle of Wight Festival (1969 and 1970), the University of Leeds and the Metropolitan Opera House.
This Tommy SDE blu-ray includes a brand new Dolby Atmos Mix, a 5.1 mix and a new dedicated stereo mix (i.e. not a mix-down from Atmos) all three by Richard Whittaker and all of them unavailable anywhere else. Richard has this to say about the new Atmos and stereo mix:
“Bob Pridden and I mixed Tommy in 5.1 back in 2013, and we decided to use the 2013 sessions as a basis to expand upon for the Dolby Atmos/Spatial Audio mix and the new 2026 stereo remix. Essentially, we wanted to keep the feel of the 2013 version and retain the essence of the original album mix, but with the rhythm section more centrally focused (as opposed to panned hard left). We also wanted to expand on the clarity and depth contained within the original multi-track recordings, as some of the channels on the one-inch, 8-track analogue tapes contained incredibly complex instrumental layers which were tucked in amongst the sonics of the original mix – so, there’s a chance that you may hear parts you’ve never noticed before. Additionally, the 2026 mix contains an extended version of Pinball Wizard, in which we utilised the pinball sound effects that the band recorded on the original multi-track tape but were never used on the original album mix. This sounds particularly cool in the Dolby Atmos/Spatial mix, with the pinball bouncing around the space, or, as I like to call it, the ‘lenticular’ or ‘autostereoscopic’ image”.
Richard Whittaker
The 2013 5.1 mix that Whittaker refers to is also included in the SDE blu-ray. It was previously available in the out-of print super deluxe edition box set of the same year. The new blu-ray also includes instrumental versions of the album in Atmos, 5.1 and stereo.
