Beastie Boys / To The 5 Boroughs

Expanded on CD and vinyl

The Beastie Boys reissue series will continue with the release of expanded 2CD and 3LP sets of the NYC trio’s sixth full-length studio album, 2004’s To The 5 Boroughs.

To The 5 Boroughs saw the Beasties follow the sprawling and eclectic Hello Nasty (1998) with the most hip-hop focused album of their career. Taking inspiration from the stark rhythms and breaks of early NYC hip-hop, the album served as a love letter to the city that formed them and the music which inspired them as hardcore-obsessed teenagers. In keeping with their excellent 1999 single ‘Alive’ (one of the ‘new’ tracks on the hits and curios anthology The Sounds Of Science), To The 5 Boroughs was the group’s most socially conscious and political album, taking shots at the George W Bush administration, the ‘war on terror’ and the US’ involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. Being the Beasties, this was balanced by obscure samples galore as well as a plethora of deliciously goofy lines (who else would boast, “I’ve got more rhymes than Carl Sagan’s got turtlenecks”?).

The 2CD edition of To The 5 Boroughs will come in a three-panel cardboard case. Meanwhile, the 3LP version will be pressed on 180g vinyl and comes in a triple gatefold jacket with pop-up elements and a subway map lithograph, housed in a firm slipcase. Sounds great, but in the UK the vinyl is £100 more expensive than the CD set…

In keeping with previous releases in the Beasties reissue series, the expanded To The 5 Boroughs doesn’t include any previously unreleased material. Instead, the bonus disc (effectively a physical version of the 2019 digital deluxe edition) features a Japan-only bonus track (‘Now Get Busy’), as well as B-sides and remixes originally released on the various international editions of singles ‘Ch-Check It Out’ and ‘Triple Trouble’, as well as the Japan-only Right Right Now Now EP.

Completists will want to hold on to their CD singles, 7”s and 12”s though, as instrumentals, a cappellas and radio edits released at the time haven’t made it on to the set, as well as the Right Right Now Now live version of ‘Sabotage’. Perhaps one day, Ad-Rock and Mike D will open up the vaults…

To The 5 Boroughs expanded edition is released on 17 April 2026 via UMR.
