Black Sabbath / Vol 4 box sets

4CD and 5LP super deluxe editions with outtakes & live material

Black Sabbath‘s 1972 album Vol 4 will be reissued early next year as expansive CD and vinyl super deluxe edition box sets.

The band’s fourth album (obviously…) features tracks like ‘Supernaut’, ‘Changes’, and ‘Snowblind’ and has been newly remastered for this reissue.

However, there’s some exciting bonus material available in both the 4CD and 5LP super deluxe editions (both formats feature exactly the same audio).

First off, there’s six previously unreleased studio outtakes on the second disc of both sets. These have been newly mixed by remixmeister Steven Wilson using the analog multi-tracks.

Additionally, the Vol 4 box sets feature 11 additional studio recordings that spotlight alternative takes, false starts and snippets of studio dialogue. Again, these have been remixed by Steven Wilson and include several alternative takes for ‘Wheels Of Confusion’ as well as outtakes for ‘The Straightener’ and ‘Snowblind’. These are contained within CD 3 of the CD box and are spread across LPs two and three in the vinyl set.

Finally, the last CD (or LPs four and five) brings together live recordings of the era, recreating a typical setlist from Black Sabbath’s tour for Vol 4. Recorded in March 1973 at various stops along the band’s U.K. tour, these recordings were originally slated for a live album that was ultimately shelved and this represents the first time a full 1973 Sabbath show has been recreated. The live audio has been newly mixed by Richard Digby Smith using the original 16-track analog tapes.

Both versions of the Vol 4 box sets come with extensive booklets featuring liner notes, rare photos, and a poster with previously unpublished early artwork of the album using the working title Snowblind.

These Vol 4 box sets will be released on 12 February 2021.

$50 at Amazon US at the moment.

Paul Mac

Amazon finally emailed me today to tell me that my order for the Rhino set was cancelled, blaming the supplier. Not very happy, especially after being strung along for 3-4 weeks on the promise (yeah, I know it’s not really a promise) of it being delivered around now.

Neil Woodcock

Vol 4 Rhino version now £55 on Amazon, only 3 left

Robert McAdam

Vol 4 is the best Sabbath Album in my view can’t wait.

My question is will it be released in Hi Res 24bit/96/192 on blue ray as other remastered rock albums have been?

This album was Sabbaths peak, all cylinders firing, every track a blinder.

paul cutts

This is by far my favourite Sabbath album and the first one I bought in 19something and would love to buy this set on vinyl but the ridiculous price of over £130.00 is outrageous. So it will be bypassed by me, a great shame.

eric slangen

Just ordered the box from Amazon.es for just 45 euro’s (all inclusive),

Andrew Greenwood

Ordered from Amazon France. Email today cancelled my order with no reason given. Curious. Brexit?

Julian Carver

should be £35-40 on cd. Not a ton. rip off
live at last yet again being pushed out.

EXCITING …

RichardL

UK buyers – Check out import prices on WOWHD and ImportCDs.com. WOWHD fixed price (incl VAT/customs) around £52/£53 – regardless of what happens to exchange rate o/a COVID variant and Brexit! Alternatively, gamble on the exchange rate and go with importCD.com, around £46 currently! Still half the price of the European version.

Tony Nicholls

Would love it, bit pricey tho’.if the price goes down i’d be sorely tempted.then deluxe editions of sabbath bloody sabbath.& sabotage then that would do for me.not a big fan of either technical ecstasy or never say die.so i’d happy with vol#4 & the other two.x

Carl Jacobs

Hi all
Looking forward to this release in both formats; ordered via Badlands.
Wonder when M.O.R and S.B.S will get the treatment?
On a different note, given that the 40th Ann has passed of H.A.H, I also would like a box set of this release. An awesome album and, to be frank a more complete set than its two predecessors. I’ll give you Dirty Women off T.E. and eponymous title track, Junior’s Eyes and Hard Road off N.S.D but the rest are sub standard. RJD breathed life into the beast. I left them though after this set.

Funky Meadows

Rhino is offering this 4-CD set for $59.99 — Certainly Amazon US and ImportCDS , at least, are going to match this price (or better). However, the price for the 5-LP set is a different story.

Tom m hans

I just ordered that, comes to $72 with shippong and taxes to Florida.

Tiago Camargo

My favourite band. I know it’s expensive, but I will happily buy it. I hope they release the entire Ozzy+Dio+Gillan discography in this format. It’s long overdue.

Stephen Moran

I’m in for the vinyl. Vol 4 should be in the OED under ‘heavy’. Of the Ozzy years, only Sabbath Bloody Sabbath – released the following year – is better in my opinion.

Uncle Meat

Vol 4 is a great Sabbath album and the one where the band’s sound changed drastically. Perhaps due to “the COKE-cola company of Los Angeles”? Exciting release but if the live disc is the “Live At Last” performance, then forget it. That’s Sabbath at their very worst.

Wayne C

Could anyone advise?, if I pre order from Amazon Germany will I have to pay duty on this come Feb next year?, this is my fav Sabbath album and I for one am really happy it’s coming out, (even though I have it in the three box sets of recent years and the excellent Chris Bellman pressing).

RichardL

Tried US Rhino for the CD set. Came to about £56 including (international) shipping to the UK. If get caught for customs, would add about £19. It’s better. Wonder if Rhino UK will pick this up and bring down general price. No rush.

Michael

Very excited about a Super Deluxe “Vol. 4,” especially knowing the sound engineering wizardry was done by our beloved Steven Wilson. I don’t think the price for this box set is out of line, but agree the CD version will probably be offered at a bit of a discount a month or so after the initial release.

“Vol. 4” will nicely accompany my copy of the “Paranoid” Super Deluxe box set. Now hoping Black Sabbath will consider doing a Super Deluxe expanded version of “Master of Reality.”

John Peace

Agreed! Why pick Vol. 4? They started this reissue campaign years ago with Black Sabbath and Paranoid. I’ve been waiting all this time for the next logical step, and what do they do? Skip the heaviest metal album ever made and do Vol. 4 instead.

Poor Steven Wilson having to sit for hours working on “FX”. In a year where Dark Side of the Moon and 666 by Aphrodite’s Child were being made Tony’s new delay pedal is a bit underwhelming, and a bit of an embarrassment in Sabbath’s catalog. This is one moment where I’m glad I’m not SW

Adam

What?? Have I missed one? Apart from the deluxe 2cd set, I can’t recall a special edition of the debut. Can I be enlightened?

Frankie

It’s not 100 for 4 CDs. It’s 100 for 4 CDs, a huge book, a poster and a box. Quit acting like it costs nothing to produce all of these items, I really don’t understand why every single news item on this website is followed by a tidal wave of moaning.

It reminds me of the complaints about the Rolling Stones Brussels Affair box set. Some people were saying “what’s the cost of producing this box? why is it so expensive?” yeah, you go on and get Mick Jagger’s signature by yourself, good luck with that.

Mad Earwig

It’s called an opinion mate.
You may want 5 versions of ‘Wheels Of Confusion’ with a bit of chat, some live stuff and a box.

Not all of us want to pay £100 for a very old album we have bought on numerous occasions and I’m past the age of wanting to blu tak a poster on my wall….even if it is Black Sabbath
I have no problem buying it yet again but it’s overpriced.

madman

Jeez, all I wanted to know is if the live portion was a re-issue of “Live At Last”! IIRC, Sabbath’s ex-managers released that to spite them and the Sabs have never approved it’s release.

If the price comes down, I’d love to have this.

Paul

But why no half speed mastering??

Ken

If they reduce the prices of Deluxe editions the profit vanishes and few will ever get produced. They are produced for hardcore fans who really want this stuff, not bargain-bucket seekers after a financial saving. So it is silly to keep moaning about the prices of them being too high. They are not being made for folk motivated solely by price. If the prices get driven down none will get produced. So it is counter-productive to keep demanding lower prices for all these deluxe editions.Just be grateful they bother to produce them.It is probably easier for them to just not bother as the overall revenues earned from them is probably not very high.

What? prices? Worry

That is a good point, but on the flipside there are fans of artist’s like McCartney and Elvis Costello that are drastically priced out of the market from the word go on box sets because of the huge mark-ups. In McCartney’s case the box sets are getting higher and higher in price, in Costello’s case 9 slabs of vinyl at a 200 quid mark-up and no CD counterpart with not much new material t or incomplete material on offer. You have boxes with tat and marbles in, and then you have the other side lack which is lacking in content but both marked up at huge prices. Either way it will sell but not in huge quantities. These box sets are slowly becoming out of touch with the consumer. In the end there will be no physical product on offer as fans will be priced out of the market completely.

David Ratchford

Steve Wilson. !!!!! No disrepect Ok. But how is it this guy alone gets to remix and stamp HIS musical prefrences on so many iconic albums. As some have stated no always for the best outcome ! Although I have all tulls remixed box sets by Steve. I always play and prfer the originals . My choice OK

WayneUK

£100 for 4 CDs? Sorry, bit too pricey.

Adam

Cheapest vinyl price seems to be with EMP at £117.99,and if you sign up to their newsletter you get 10 per cent off and free delivery. I still won’t be paying that though, still, over £20 per vinyl.

Adam

As big a fan as I am, in the current climate, I could not justify paying out these ridiculous prices for this, and they can’t justify charging them. A real rip off.

Dan Glaser

I think you’ve made a spelling mistake in your opening line of the description of this new Sabbath box set. It should read “Black Sabbath‘s 1972 album Vol 4 will be reissued early next year as expensive CD and vinyl super deluxe edition box sets”

Richard Stephen Pievaitis

It’s a big NO from him and a little meh from me!
Goodnight.

Phil Cohen

Amazon’s companies may only be guessing at the price. At Rhino’s website (Rhino/Warner is the U.S.A. label for the set) it can be preordered at a very reasonable $59(US), plus tax & shipping. Whether they’ll sell to UK/Europe customers…I don’t know.

Dale Munday

Disc three looks like a play once only.

Friso

Have the album already in the exclusive coloured vinyl boxset The Ten Year War.
Think I’ll go for the CD set.

Kevin

Another example of why in 2021 I will buy buying virtually zero. It all got silly.

Francesco

Good point, well made! This one really is a no-brainer, as in why would you? Unless you are an avid Sabs completist…and to be honest, even then…

Dean

Already a lot of discussion online about this (hello fellow Hoff-ites!)

Look, I’m a big Sabbath fan, and I first heard Vol. 4 back in the 70’s, so this should have me very excited. Alas, something just isn’t right. The album itself is not remixed, just remastered (again!) The last box (Paranoid) was brickwalled. Caution on that one then, but either way not essential.

The outtakes don’t seem to be complete takes, so I’m expecting more of a stop/start type of affair. Or perhaps they’ve been pieced together. With Wilson involved (though not as far as I can tell in the remastering of the album proper) this could be very good. We need more details because………….

£99!!! For four discs. £25 per. Yeah I know, the box, the book. But man that’s a frightening price point for this. It needs to come down, and perhaps will closer to release.

John F Berning

Price is ridiculous.
I might purchase it for $25-$30 ..
Maybe

Lee Realgone

“…not in the remastering of the album proper”

Well, no. As those on the Hoffman forum have already no doubt pointed out endlessly, he doesn’t remaster. That’s someone else’s job. Wilson is brought in (for better or worse) to create new mixes. If he somehow ruins this in the way he utterly ruined Marillion albums, that’d be a genuine travesty.

Quante

Although you already have the original albums to play if you don’t like the Steven Wilson remixes, so nothing has been lost that stops your enjoyment?

Tim-Meh

It would have made a decent double CD set like the first three albums but nope, not this time. But… if you want to see a whole lot of tat for an extortionate price checkout the 30th anniversary of Alice In Chains Facelift that’s due out early next year. $152 (haven’t see it available outside the States) for the album on vinyl in a box with a tape, photobook, poster, slipmat, sticker sheet, tour laminate, and four art prints. I don’r bloody think so.

Elliott Buckingham

At 4 cds with no bluray or surround mix this is a £30 set this is nearly as ridiculously priced as the eagles Hotel california deluxe set

Danny Rowton

I love Sabbath. Favourite band. I love Volume 4. Their best album. But £130? I’m out.

Rob Caiger

I found multitracks for Sabbath’s first four albums back in the 90’s while I was searching for The Move and Procol Harum. Found the very first recordings Yes did for Apple as well. Sabbath’s tapes weren’t complete – some albums had more reels than others. But they were in excellent condition, especially the reels from Regent Sound. There were also original stereo outtake masters and some live reels of a complete gig – not this one. For Vol 4, I think the multi’s were mostly outtake reels. I’ll have to check my files. In 2000, myself and Tim Hunt took all the reels into the studio for what was meant to be a week-long attended session by members of the band, various managements and the record company (Sanctuary at that time). And no one turned up! So me and Tim spent a week getting to know early Sabbath very well :-) One of the best week’s I spent in the studio – the music was incredible but to get into the sounds on the tapes and isolate and mix as we could was a real privilege. Things have come out from those reels over the years since but its good to see this one finally on the way. Anything Steven Wilson mixes is going to be exceptional and thoroughly recommended. Can’t wait to hear what he’s done…

Lee Realgone

“Anything Steven Wilson mixes is going to be exceptional”

Did you hear the new stereo mix of Marillion’s Brave? Everything absolutely drenched in reverb with Hogarth sounding like he was mumbling from the end of a corridor. Wilson ruined one of the best albums ever.

Jules(Rules)

I don’t agree with that at all. I find SW’s version of Brave an improvement on almost all tracks (with the exception of maybe The Hollow Man). The original mix sounds distant in comparison. The rockier tracks (Hard as Love, etc.) now sound much more cohesive to my ears.

Gareth

£100 for:

– the original album ‘as is’
– remixed outtakes (not something that makes much sense – did they originally mix unreleased outtakes?!)
– a live CD that’s basically 1980’s Live at Last with 3 of the lesser songs substituted – this being a live release that the whole band was embarrassed about on its original release

They must have been snowblind when they came up with that price.

jon turpin

Am i wrong in thinking that…..make it a good price….you will sell more!! Do these bands think we’re made of money!?

Mark

Saw the £99 price and thought that was for the vinyl version.
Won’t be getting the CD at that price.

Stuart Hilton

4 X CD for £99 that cant be right, can it?

Andy

definitely one to sit & wait on, those prices are daft, give it the new year, or maybe before they’ll spot they’ve been a tad hyped on the price.

Paul Wren

It’s a good news day all round -first vaccine approval and now a new Sabbath vinyl box set. That’s an easy buy decision for me and thanks very much for the early tip off about it.

Jimmyhank

FAR too expensive, even if they had added a 5.1/videos Blu ray; without that, it is absolutely extortionate (although I’ll enjoy the extra tracks on whichever streaming platform they turn up on…)

Shaun

Way overpriced. £40 for four cds seems more reasonable. Wasn’t the Live at Last album from this era? I understood that was a complete concert from The Rainbow in 1973.

Brennan

You had me at Steven Wilson…

mark turrell

bit baffled by the price of the 4cd version.
The Paranoid superdeluxe retailed for around $54 when i bought it, so why the big jump in price for this one?

Charles

Exactly what I came to say. Gonna’ wait on a possible price drop for this one. I have this on vinyl both OG and reissued so $100+ for a box with nothing truly new on it and bare bones outtakes is silly.

CJL

Jeez! £99! That’s £30 more than the recently re-released Paranoid box! And, the running time of the 2nd must be all of 25mins! Love Sabbath & really love Vol 4 but at this price, they can **** right off!
