Cherry Red follow-up C86 with C87

c87

Cherry Red will soon follow-up their 2014 C86 indie three-CD set – which celebrated and expanded on the original NME mail-order cassette compilation – with C87, a completely new selection of similar music across three discs.

This is very much a ‘what if’ compilation. What if the NME had reconvened a year on from their original compilation? C87 features 70 tracks in total, most recorded and/or released in the year or so following C86 – roughly, the summer of 1986 to the end of 1987.

Bands featured include, The House of Love, The Shamen, The Darling Buds, The Inspiral Carpets, Kitchens Of Distinction, The Servants, The Wedding Present and more.

C87 is released on 10 June 2016.

[…] Red follow up their well received eighties indie-pop collections of the last few years (C86 and C87) with C88, a new three-CD set that focuses its gaze on the year 1988. C86 was an expanded version […]

The real “C” of course is C81 NME’s cassette (only) of bliss. I wussed it and got C86 on vinyl!

Crashy88

Yes! I really wish someone would remaster/reissue the original NME C81 compilation–a lot of great music from a slightly earlier period and most of it not available digitally. I’ve run through a few copies of the cassette and they keep getting more and more expensive on Ebay….

I love this blog to death also for the recommendations of the people posting: just had a listen to Close Lobsters, I didn’t know them but what I hear is great to my ears, just ordered the 3 cd set so thanks Rare Glam!!

Ah, the music – and times – of my youth. More great records than you could hope to buy. Great bands to see every week (in a multitude of styles not just “jangly” as the naysayers would have you believe), new friends all over the place. Trips to Perth, Dundee, Glasgow, Greenock, London. Crashing on floors. Buses, trains and the back of tour vans. Lugging gear from venues to vans to flats. Cool enthusiasts in nearly every town putting gigs on / or releasing records for the love of it. The true flowering of the “ideals” of punk (IMO).

…and “Frans Hals” by McCarthy (listed above) is one of the greatest records of all time (beats any Stereolab for sure!). (But no Close Lobsters? For shame! Maybe tied up by Fire Records?). And Dog Faced Hermans! Mental and ace! Skronk! Andy Moor joined Dutch legends The Ex, y’know.

+ Second the hope for a Bogshed comp. That stuff still holds up. Sad to hear of Phil Hartley’s death.

Fire Records put a very nice 3 x CD digipak set of Close Lobsters not that long ago, both albums plus all the 45s. Wonderful stuff. I’ve already pre-ordered C87 . Have been playing both the C86 3 x cd and Scared To Get Happy 5xCD ) (1980-89) recently. Wonderful indie pop records all and never have guitars been so loudly and abrasively trebly! What next – ‘Still Scared To Get Happy’ – The Sequel’? There’s another right years for the fictive ‘C8…’ series to work with of course!

Interesting to see Bogshed on the tracklisting. Singer Phil Hartley had vetoed an attempt to reissue the group’s catalogue (by Sanctuary, I think) but it emerged last year that he had actually died in 2006. One wonders if the surviving members will now press on.

Brian

Two of Bogshed have now passed away. Tris died a couple of years ago I believe from an aggressive brain tumour. Does anyone know how Phil died? I know it sounds morbid but he must have died young.

Hope to pick up the special RSD double LP of C86 tomorrow; fingers crossed….
