David Sylvian / The Good Son vs The Only Daughter & Died in the Wool

First time on vinyl

David Sylvian’s The Good Son vs The Only Daughter – The Blemish Remixes and Died in the Wool – Manafon Variations will be released on vinyl for the first time in January.

The former Japan frontman has established a longstanding solo career since the dissolution of the band in 1982, moving from the art-pop sound that saw them gain success and into experimental, ambient, and freeform work. These albums are from the latter period of that career, having been released on Sylvian’s own Samadhisound label in 2005 and 2011 respectively, but were previously only available on CD.

The Good Son vs The Only Daughter was the follow-up and companion to Sylvian’s 2003 album Blemish. For these remixes Sylvian worked with a number of collaborators including Ryoji Ikeda, Burnt Friedman, and Readymade FC, although some songs were re-recorded rather than remixed.

Died in the Wool features six songs from Sylvian’s 2009 album Manafon which were reworked by composer Dai Fujikura. Alongside this, the album also features a few non-album tracks, including ‘I Should Not Dare’ and ‘A Certain Slant of Light’ which are Emily Dickinson poems which have been set to music and sung by Sylvian, and a stereo mix of ‘When We Return You Won’t Recognise Us’, a semi-improvised sound installation commissioned for the 2008-09 Biennial of Canaries.

The Good Son vs The Only Daughter – The Blemish Remixes will come as a single LP, whereas Died in the Wool – Manafon Variations will be a double LP.

Both albums will be released on 31 January 2025 via Universal Music.
