End of humanity concept album on the horizon

Deep Purple have announced a new studio album, SPLAT!, due in July.

SPLAT! will be the heavy rock pioneers’ 24th studio album and, again, finds the latest line-up of the group – Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Don Airey and Simon McBride – working with producer Bob Ezrin, the man behind the desk for all of their albums since 2013’s Now What?!.

Though details are scarce at the moment, SPLAT! will be a concept album based on an idea from Gillan. “Rather than treating the end as destruction,” says the press release, “the album imagines it as transformation: SPLAT! explores the end of humanity not in any crude apocalyptic sense but as a metamorphosis beyond physical existence.” Heavy stuff.

Gillan says, “Where we are now with this incarnation of Deep Purple feels very much like a very ‘now’ version of Deep Purple as it was in the seventies… We are very much back in with material that is compatible with ‘Highway Star’, ‘Smoke on the Water’, ‘Lazy’ – the dynamics, the balance, and the fun of the music we made from ’69 to ’73… Deep Purple is in a great place right now.

The 13-track album will be available on CD (jewel case and digipak editions) , 2LP editions (mastered at 45RPM and available on black, purple and transparent yellow vinyl), 2LP picture disc, cassette or as a box set. The box includes the 2LP set, a CD, and three 10-inch records featuring live recordings from the 2014 tour. It also features a seven-inch with exclusive non-album track ‘GUINNESIS’ [sic].

SPLAT! will be released on 3 July 2026, via earMUSIC
