Elastica / Elastica reissue

Elastica’s self-titled 1995 debut album is to be reissued by Rough Trade on vinyl and CD in October, adding a disc of B-sides and rarities.

The reissue is the first time the album has been available on vinyl in the UK since it was remastered and re-released for Record Store Day in 2017, though Brooklyn based indie label Kanine released a limited 2LP set in the US in 2025.

A source confirmed to SDE that the reissue is the reason for a recent teaser post on Elastica’s official Instagram account in July which stated: “…we’re back.” There are categorically no plans for the band to reform, having split up in 2001 following their second album The Menace the year before.

The new 2LP set comes with a poster featuring photos from the band’s archive. It adds ‘See That Animal’, the early song co-written by Brett Anderson which features on US pressings of Elastica, plus the era’s B-sides: ‘Pussycat’ from ‘Stutter’; ‘Rockunroll’ from ‘Line Up’; ‘Spastica’ and a demo of album track ‘Blue’ from ‘Connection’; plus ‘Car Wash’, ‘Gloria’ and ‘Brighton Rock’ from ‘Waking Up’. Other bonus tracks are a cover of Adam And The Ants’ ‘Cleopatra’, originally included as a flexidisc on early original vinyl pressings of the 1995 album; and ‘In The City’ from the soundtrack of 1997 film Nowhere, directed by Gregg Araki.

The bonus LP is the same as that from Kanine’s edition of Elastica, bar one curious change: Kanine dropped ‘Gloria’ in favour of a demo of ‘Bar Bar Bar’ – a song which otherwise remains unreleased in studio form, but which appeared on Elastica’s BBC Sessions album in 2001 from a John Peel session in June 1994.

The 2017 RSD pressing of Elastica had only added ‘In The City’, as a flexidisc, though that did include the Elastica fanzine – based on the catalogue included in Adam And The Ants’ Kings Of The Wild Frontier – which isn’t featured in the new 2LP.

It’s believed that a new vinyl pressing of The Menace will eventually follow that of Elastica. The album has remained unavailable on vinyl since its original limited pressing in 2000, which now fetches around £100.

There were rumours that Elastica considered reforming to play at the Meltdown Festival curated by Justine Frischmann’s former flatmate MIA in 2017. Frischmann’s only involvement in music since Elastica’s split was helping MIA, who originally wrote her early hit ‘Galang’ for Elastica, before Frischmann persuaded the rapper to record it herself.

Instead, Elastica haven’t played together since a show at Sheffield Leadmill in 2001. Frischmann is now an artist living in San Francisco; Donna Matthews works with homeless charities; Annie Holland is a gardener; and Justin Welch is the only member still active in music, as The Jesus And Mary Chain’s drummer.

Elastica by Elastica will be reissued on 2CD and 2LP by Rough Trade 2 October 2026.
