Garbage / Let All That We Imagine Be The Light

New studio album

Garbage will release a new studio album called Let All That We Imagine Be The Light, in May.

The band’s eighth long-player was recorded at Red Razor Sounds in Los Angeles, Butch Vig’s studio Grunge Is Dead, and Shirley Manson’s bedroom. It was produced by the band and longtime engineer Billy Bush.

I have been lucky enough to enjoy a sneak preview of the album and for me it’s a real return to form. They’ve dialled down some of the industrial textures to offer some fantastic melody-driven grunge-pop. ‘There’s No Future In Optimism’ (the opener) has a title that doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but it has a insistent earworm of a refrain in “If you’re ready for love”. ‘Chinese Fire Horse’ is an expletive-laden corker, with some brilliant, angular guitar work. ‘Hold’ is driving pop with a great chorus, the dubby ‘Have We Met (The Void)’ starts with end-of-the-world synths and the dramatic, yearning ‘Love to Give’ us underscored by dramatic Timpani. There’s lots of production, with great arrangements, but despite that Let All That We Imagine Be The Light has an pleasing lo-fi charm. It’s the group’s best collection of songs since the original era.

CD with band-signed insert available from Amazon in the UK

Shirley Manson had this to say about the album: “Going into making this record, I was determined to find a more hopeful, uplifting world to immerse myself in. The title of the album, Let All That We Imagine Be The Light is a perfect, headline statement for the record as a whole. When things feel dark it feels imperative to seek out the forces that are light, positive and beautiful in the world. It almost feels like a matter of life and death. A strategy for survival”.

In terms of formats the album is available in ‘pearl sunrise’ coloured vinyl, orange vinyl and on CD. The official Garbage shop has various options, including signed prints with bundles, but you can buy the CD on its own with a signed insert, from Amazon in the UK.

Let All That We Imagine Be The Light will be released on CD and vinyl on 30 May via BMG.
