Oxygène (English: Oxygen) is an album of instrumental electronic music composed, produced, and performed by the French composer Jean-Michel Jarre. It was first released in France in December 1976. Jarre recorded the album in his home using a variety of analog synthesizers and other electronic instruments and effects. It became a bestseller and was Jarre’s first album to achieve mainstream success. It was also highly influential in the development of electronic music and has been described as the album that “led the synthesizer revolution of the Seventies”
This iconic recording has been mixed in Dolby Atmos and 5.1 Surround by David Kosten, Steven Wilson and Jean-Michel Jarre, from the original multi-tracks, with sessions in Paris and London to perfect these immersive mixes.
In an excerpt from notes in the blu-ray booklet, David Kosten explains the methodology of this process:
“A crucial part of the original 1976 production was the extreme left/right panning between a dry (un-effected) sound and an echoed version of itself. Mostly on the original Oxygène stereo mix, we hear a dry sound panned hard to the left, and a rolling, repeating tape-echo version of it panned fully to the right, at the same level as the dry tone. This gives the music an incredibly wide, spacious and unique feel.
All of this was vital to keep intact while making new versions for 2026 – the sound balance was so carefully mixed and delicate on the 1976 original stereo mixes, and we worked to both recreate the sonics of the original mixes, and to allow the music to breathe anew in a three dimensional format.
We refined all of the motion, the spatial positioning and balances of the album. We have let go of some of the [original][ fixed left/right panning in these new immersive versions, and often allowed the trailing, vaporous echoes to move around the space (‘Part II’ has lots of this). All the sounds disappear into the centre speaker at the end of ‘Part III’, before re-emerging with the birdsong, directly above us, using the height speakers. In ‘Part V’, the drums and bass circle the listener, while the melodies play from multiple spaces around the room. The ocean in ‘Part VI’ crashes over us from front to back now – and the seagull flies about the landscape too!”
In addition to the Atmos and 5.1 mixes, the blu-ray also features a Miles Showell 2026 remaster of the original 1976 album made from a new transfer of the original stereo tapes (recently unearthed from Jean-Michel Jarre’s archive). This is unlimited audio presented at the highest possible resolution (192 kHz / 24 bit) – the original version has never sounded better, and possibly never will!
