Neil Young to release lost album, ‘Oceanside Countryside’
Recorded in 1977
Neil Young appears to have ‘lost’ more albums than most, and next month he will release another unreleased long-player from his incredible archive.
Recorded in 1977 Oceanside Countryside rather confusingly has the same name as CD 4 in last year’s Archives Vol III but while they are similar, they’re not exactly the same. The versions of the songs ‘Lost in Space’, ‘Captain Kennedy’ and ‘The Old Homestead’ are the versions that ended up on Hawks and Doves (in 1980) while ‘Sail Away’, ‘Goin’ Back’, ‘Human Highway’, ‘It Might Have Been’ and ‘Pocohontas’ are actually the same as on Archives Vol III. ‘Field of Opportunity’ and ‘Dance Dance Dance’ are slightly different to the versions of Archives Vol III, because on these versions Young is on backing vocals, rather than Nicolette Larson.
But NY stresses that “These songs are the original mixes done at the time of the recordings”. The Oceanside element (side one) was recorded in Florida and Malibu with NY singing and playing (most of) the instruments. Countryside (side two) features songs recorded in Nashville with Ben Keith, Joe Osborn and a few others.
Oceanside Countryside is being released as part of Neil’s newish Analog Originals Series (AOS). The 50th anniversary clear vinyl of On The Beach displayed ‘Analog Originals’ on the front, as did box number six in the “Official Release Series” (Discs 26, 27, 28 & 29). It’s a little hard keeping track of all these series, since in the past other ‘lost albums’ (e.g. Hitchhiker) have been issued via the Special Release Series (SRS) banner.
There’s no CD release for Oceanside Countryside, but it will be issued on vinyl (mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering) on 14 February 2025, via Reprise Records. A clear vinyl edition is available via selected retailers.
