Now That’s What I Call Music continue their CD collections of 1980s twelve-inch mixes with a new 4CD set: NOW 12″ 80s: 1984 Part Two

This set follows up Part One from January and what with this being 1984 and all, it’s rather predictably good – if familiar. Its 46 tracks include massive hits from Wham!, Culture Club, Nena, Eurythmics, New Order, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Bronski Beat, ABC, Art of Noise, Duran Duran, Nik Kershaw, Tina Turner, Simple Minds and many more.

There’s a few notable rarities, such as the 8.10 Extended Mix of the ‘Playout’ version of Paul McCartney’s ‘No More Lonely Nights’, which has thus far only appeared on CD on the 1993 reissue of Give My Regards to Broad Street (the 6.53 Arthur Baker ‘Special Dance Mix’ remains unreleased on CD). It has to be said that NOW are doing good work in getting out rare Macca remixes (with the man himself apparently uninterested) since over the last few years they have so far having delivered on CD the Extended Mixes of ‘Say Say Say’, ‘Once Upon A Long Ago’ and now ‘No More Lonely Nights’. Let’s hope John ‘Tokes’ Potoker’s 1986’s remix of ‘Pretty Little Head’ will be in their sights in the future, although that single wasn’t it hit, so that may well be an issue.

Back to this compilation, and it is quite possibly hosting the CD debut of the Extended Mix of Elton John’s hit ‘Passengers’ and it’s also home to the early 1984 extended mix of the Thompson Twins ‘Lay Your Hands On Me’, which is the Alex Sadkin co-produced version before Nile Rodgers laid his hands on it. This version is a bit more Into The Gap than Here’s To Future Days which is obviously a good thing!
