Roberta Flack / With Her Songs: The Atlantic Albums, 1969–1978

Roberta Flack’s ’70s purple patch is to be celebrated with an 8CD box set, With Her Songs: The Atlantic Albums 1969–1978, the first release of material by the soul great since she died in February 2025.

With Her Songs includes eight newly remastered studio albums: First Take (1969), Chapter Two (1970), Quiet Fire (1971), Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway (1972), Killing Me Softly (1973), Feel Like Makin’ Love (1975), Blue Lights in the Basement (1977), and Roberta Flack (1978).

With the exception of commercial peaks First Take and Killing Me Softly, Flack’s back catalogue has been bafflingly underserved on CD. A 5CD Original Album Series set was released in 2013 and included those two albums plus Quiet Fire, Feel Like Makin’ Love and Blue Lights In The Basement, but other than Japanese reissues, gems such as Chapter Two haven’t been available on CD for decades.

From that landmark debut – an extraordinary outpouring of socially, genre-defying (soul, funk, jazz, folk – what couldn’t she do?) music recorded in just 10 hours – through albums that took in soul classics (Killing Me Softly, Feel Like Makin’ Love), civil rights anthems covers of Broadway standards and more, Flack became a worldwide star and a pioneer. With Her Songs will be released days before what would have been Flack’s 89th birthday and is a vital reminder of her singular talent.
