A 30th anniversary edition of Roxette‘s 1991 album Joyride will be reissued in November. The album was an enormous success around the world in part thanks to the strong title track which reached number one virtually everywhere including America, where it was Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle’s fourth and final chart-topping single.

Joyride was the group’s third album and went on to sell 11m copies world wide. ‘Fading Like A Flower (Every Time You Leave)’ was a strong follow-up single and three further 45s reached the top 30 in most territories.

The album is ‘fully serviced’ for the reissue and is offered as a single vinyl LP (now in a gatefold sleeve) available as a smart ‘marbled’ orange vinyl (as well as black) and three-CD and 4LP vinyl box set.

The three-CD and 4LP editions offer plenty of demos, alternates and rare material. The former has 35 bonus tracks including 12 previously unreleased songs, among them the first recording of ‘Hotblooded’, initially slated as the album’s opening track until ‘Joyride’ superseded it. The multi-disc Joyride sets also offers a chance to hear two previously unreleased demos of songs originally released by Per’s former group Gyllene Tider, who in 1984 tried to break the international market with the album ‘Heartland Café’.

Per Gessle explains: “In the autumn of 1989 I was going through all kinds of possible material for the new Roxette album. ‘Run Run Run’ and ‘Another Place, Another Time’ from the Heartland Café album felt like quite strong contenders, so we did new and more ‘Roxified’ demo versions of them. ‘Run Run Run’ was a favourite of mine – I thought it had potential to go a long way”. However neither track made it on to the album. “Even though we were travelling the world constantly doing promotion for Look Sharp! as well as ‘It Must Have Been Love’, I managed to find time to write lots of new songs. Most of them were customised for Marie to sing, and in the end we preferred those,” Per says. 

The 4LP vinyl box adds 38 additional tracks. But three of those (‘I Remember You’, ‘Soul Deep’ and ‘Church of Your Heart’) are actually CD album tracks that were left off the original vinyl, due to running time restrictions. This was the era of ‘long’ albums on CD and Joyride ran to 55 minutes.

Other unearthed demos from 1990 are ‘Small Talk’, ‘Church Of Your Heart’, ‘Physical Fascination’, ‘Things Will Never Be The Same’, ‘I Remember You’ and ‘Spending My Time’ B-side ‘The Sweet Hello, The Sad Goodbye’ (the studio version is also included).

Joyride will be reissued on 26 November 2021.
