Scritti Politti / Songs To Remember reissue
Classic debut finally returns, but where are the extras?
Scritti Politti will release a remastered edition of their 1982 debut album, Songs To Remember, on CD and vinyl in April.
Songs To Remember represented a shift in direction from the dissonant, dub-post-punk of the Green Gartside-led group’s early singles, reflecting the frontman’s embrace of soul, lover’s rock, jazz and early rap. This shift towards a poppier sound didn’t mean Gartside’s lyrics were toned down, over the course of Songs To Remember he references Nietzsche, Derrida and Wittgenstein. By way of irresistibly buoyant melodies and gossamer production, Gartside Trojan horsed philosophical theories into the hit parade – Songs To Remember reached No 12 in the UK album chart and paved the way for further glories.
Reissues of the album have been thin on the ground over the years. Virgin’s 1985 pressing was the album’s last time on vinyl, while it last saw the light of day on CD in 2001. None of the previous editions featured any bonus tracks, despite the clutch of extended mixes and B-sides included on contemporary 12” singles ‘Faithless’ and ‘Asylums In Jerusalem’/’Jacques Derrida’.
The new edition is no different, though the audio has been fully remastered for this reissue by Alex Wharton at Abbey Road Studios, overseen by Gartside himself.
The vinyl will come in a replica of the original packaging, featuring an embossed sleeve with a pictogram of a bee in the front corner of the cover.
Songs To Remember is out 10 April 2026, via Rough Trade.
