FIRST PICTURES / The Beatles, Butchered! Yesterday And Today
Following on from our exclusive photos of The Beatles US Albums box set, we are working our way through the individual albums to show you exclusive pictures of the real CD reissue packaging. Today, the one you’ve all been waiting for, Yesterday And Today (aka “Yesterday”…and Today).
Released in 1966, The Beatles’ Capitol album Yesterday and Today is remembered primarily due to the controversy over the infamous ‘butcher’ cover. 750,000 copies with the Robert Whitaker photographed cover were pressed and then recalled after widespread offence was caused. A rather anodyne photo of the band next to a large trunk was the replacement.
This album includes four tracks from the UK Rubber Soul (not featured on the US version) as well as Act Naturally and Yesterday from Help!. Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out make an appearance, and I’m Only Sleeping, And Your Bird Can Sing and Doctor Robert feature, almost two months before the UK release of Revolver.
As these photos show, the new CD comes with a sticker of the ‘trunk’ cover which you can do with what you will. It is possible to stick onto the card butcher sleeve and remove without damage, but you have to be very careful. Probably best to avoid doing this. Why would you want to hide the butcher cover anyway?
Yesterday And Today is available separately or as part of the US Albums box set and will be issued on 20 January 2014.
NB: Photos are of early pre-production packaging.
