Little Feat’s second and third albums, Sailin’ Shoes and Dixie Chicken, will be reissued as expanded deluxe editions in June.
Both records (Sailin’ Shoes was issued in 1972 while Dixie Chicken followed in ’73) have been remastered and recut to vinyl and the expanded 2CD and 3LP editions offer previously unreleased studio outtakes and demos, and complete unreleased live shows (same content on vinyl and CD).
Sailin’ Shoes includes the classic and much covered ‘Willin”, as well as the title track which Robert Palmer recorded for his debut album Sneaking Sally Through The Alley. In fact, so smitten was Palmer with Little Feat as musicians, that they became his backing band on a few tracks on his second solo album, 1975’s Pressure Drop. Dixie Chicken features songs such as ‘Two Trains’, ‘Fat Man in the Bathtub’ and of course the brilliant title track.
These 2CD and 3LP deluxe editions of Sailin’ Shoes and Dixie Chicken will be released on 23 June 2023, via Rhino.

This news is great! Been a long time fan since Sailin’ Shoes first came out – saw them twice at The Rainbow and then again at Charlton in the mid 70s (stupid ignorant drunk louts threw bottles at them!). Have seen them many times again now I’m here in the USA. Amazing musicians! Looking forward to hearing the remasters and wondering if they have cleaned up the mudiness of the early albums. Many thanks for separating the CD and vinyl packages – just don’t need vinyl.
Only own their live album Waiting For Columbus, and it is stellar! Was about to buy the 1st 5 CDs via that bargain box series, Original Album Classics. But, those have no annotations. Then, this exciting news is announced! Going to purchase the 2CD editions. My only concern is that the extra live tracks appear short. Doesn’t appear to be full concerts. Alas, hope the other classic Feat albums get the same treatment! What a great band that I came around, somewhat late to. Long live Little Feat!
The 1971 show was a part of a multi-artist lineup benefit show so their 42 minute set was all that was allotted time-wise.
The Paul’s Mall show is the main Little Feat portion of a radio broadcast (which explains the 30-ish minute length). However, this is show sourced from the pre-broadcast tape that we had on hand in our vault.
Rhino, and specifically Jason Jones, have decided to pick up the Lowell George era Little Feat on their backs and deliver a carefully curated reissue program that reflects the genius of George and the impact the band made during the 70s. Starting with the decision to release the ever elusive Electrif Lycanthrope on RSD 18 months ago they followed it up with a comprehensive live show box set of Waiting for Columbus
Although I knew Sailin Shoes was coming in at least a Deluxe format, I was genuinely surprised that Dixie Chicken would be released at the same time. And, of course, it is very tempting to look further ahead to Feats don’t fail me now and the quite brilliant Last Record Album perhaps even in SDE format.
Watch Lowell on the OGWT , remember Feat shows you saw (me at Charlton) and look forward to more music from this truly great band. Thanks Rhino.
Agree with all of this.It is Jason’s enthusiasm and dedication that is taking this forward.I get the strong impression that the head honchos at Rhino are dubious about whether it is commercially viable but Jason and the success of the Waiting For Columbus box has convinced them it is.
There is definitely the potential for more archival Feat releases from the Lowell era including an expanded edition of his solo album but whether they will happen depends on the success of these 2.
Two absolute classics from the seventies and with Alice Cooper’s brace yeserday June is going to be expensive but that is why we are here is it not. When the music is sublime and the price just about right on, no complants here apart from the fact thst UK vinyl is being overpriced.
I have been disinterested in almost every reissue, deluxe, remastered, etc. for the past year or two. A combination of uninteresting material, ridiculous prices, unwanted giant packages, tat, etc. has taken its toll on my music purchasing. Then along comes these two deluxe editions. 1st rate band, interesting extras, and hopefully quality sound at reasonable prices. I’m definitely purchasing the two CD versions and if it turns out the the vinyl is really AAA then I’m going to purchase it as well. (I almost never buy vinyl because it is almost always digitally sourced.) If you like music these two albums are no brainers. I’ve listened to the entire Waiting for Columbus SDE and will likely listen to the entire 8 CDs again and again. The musicianship of Little Feat is off the chart. If you are not familiar with this band get these two albums and the Waiting for Columbus SDE. You will sit back in your chair and say WOW THIS IS MUSIC! Enjoy.
The main albums have both been confirmed to be AAA. The two bonus records attached to each album will have digital in the chain. As confirmed by Jason Rhino at the Hoffman forum.
Excellent – great news and all sounds painstakingly done; just a shame that while the UK has the best prices for the CDs by some margin, the vinyl product is more expensive here – by some margin.
Oh yes. My sweet spot. Love this band, and this looks like a couple of great editions. Great price too.
These take me back to the days when Universal started issuing their Deluxe Editions. Good content, good notes and a reasonable price. I would have to say I prefer this type of reissue to the bloated overpriced uber deluxes,
Something seriously wrong in the world when an announcement of a Wham! singles comp has 37 comments and deluxe editions of two of the actual best albums of the 70s only has 5!
This is thrilling news, the bonus material sounds really exciting. And as mentioned below, the Waiting For Columbus deluxe edition was incredible.
Really great albums. I have had digital versions for years and love them. The Little Feat catalogue was released in the late 2000s on Mobile Fidelity – all analogue (before the DXD thing) – I didn’t think that those records captured the magic. The recent “Waiting for Columbus” reissue was terrific. These will be almost certainly sourced from new digital remasters and cut to vinyl presumably by Bernie Grundman. Nevertheless – the content looks really good: live material from that era released by Rhino for RSD a year or two ago (lectrif Lycanthrope Live At Ultra-Sonic Studios, 1974) was really engaging.
The reissues are spot on. New remasters of the albums, demos and live shows. No marbles or guff and at a reasonable price. Spot on!
These albums are fabulous and anyone who hasn’t heard them should take a listen.
Surround mix Paul?….

Appreciate the reply, that’s good news. :) Thanks for making these future Feat releases available!

Do you know if Waiting for Columbus was AAA?
The 2LP black vinyl and red vinyl versions that Bernie Grundman cut were AAA.
Thanks Jason for stopping by and leaving a few comments! Cheers, Paul

I am thrilled. Both are for me essential and let’s have similar releases for the other albums from the Lowell George era.

Totally agree Phil , but each to their own. I thought that I would help the numbers!

My thoughts exactly (don’t care for surround mixes though).
These look great. Really pleased that the reissue campaign started by the Waiting For Columbus box is continuing. A hugely underrated band.
