Prince’s timeless 1984 album Purple Rain has been mixed in Dolby Atmos and will be released on blu-ray audio in April. An exclusive SDE edition with a specially-designed slipcase is available to pre-order.

Prince shattered all expectations and made music history when he released the album Purple Rain, followed by the hit film of the same name weeks later. The 9-track LP went on to win two Grammy awards, two American Music Awards, a Brit Award, and an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. 

In 2012 the Library of Congress added the album to the National Recording Registry, which only accepts sound recordings that “are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States.”

Purple Rain features the iconic singles ‘When Doves Cry’, ‘Let’s Go Crazy’, ‘Purple Rain’, ‘I Would Die 4 U’, and ‘Take Me With You’.  The album spent an incredible 24 weeks at number one on the Billboard album charts and has sold over 25 million copies worldwide.

The 2024 Dolby Atmos presentation ofPurple Rain was meticulously mixed from the original multi-track master tapes by Prince’s protege and Best Engineered Grammy nominee Chris James. 

This blu-ray audio (no video) features: 

• Purple Rain 2024 Dolby Atmos Mix (48/24)
• Purple Rain Original 1984 Mix (96/24)

The hi-res stereo mix is the 1984 mix as mastered by Bernie Grundman. It is not the 2015 Paisley Park remaster that was featured on the 2017 deluxe edition.

The SDE exclusive edition features a unique and specially designed slipcase unavailable anywhere else.

This special blu-ray audio edition of Purple Rain will be released on 25 April 2025 via NPG Records and Paisley Park Enterprises in partnership with Warner Records.
