BMG and The Montreux Jazz Festival have announced The Montreux Years, a live set of soul-jazz great Roberta Flack‘s performances at the festival, due in June.
The 13-track set is available on CD and 2LP vinyl and includes tracks from Flack’s performances at the 1971, 1972, 1990, 2005 and 2008 festivals. It’s more good news for fans of the legendary singer, following the recent release of With Her Songs: The Atlantic Albums, 1969-1978, an 8CD box set which brought albums from her ’70s purple patch back into print.
The Montreux Years is especially welcome thanks to the dearth of quality live material from Flack out there – fans have had to make do with tracks on the 1980 Peabo Bryson duets set Live & More or budget sets such as 2012’s S.O.U.L (which features recordings from her 1985 tour). The first taste of The Montreux Years comes with a joyful version of ‘I’d Like To Be Baby To You’, originally on her 1977 album Blue Lights In The Basement, recorded at the festival in 1990.
The tracks have been fully restored and mastered by Tony Cousins at Metropolis Studios, London and the set comes with sleevenotes from Flack’s manager, Suzanne Coga, along with previously unseen photos.
