David Bowie / Moonage Daydream: Music From The Film

2CD set of hits, rarities and curios

A companion album to Brett Morgen’s forthcoming David Bowie feature documentary, Moonage Daydream, will be released in November.

The film is coming to cinemas next month and apparently uses never-before-seen footage, performances and music to create a “feature length experiential cinematic odyssey [that] explores David Bowie’s creative, musical and spiritual journey”. I’m seeing it in a couple of weeks and will tell you if any of that is true!

Of course, it was almost inevitable that there would be a soundtrack, but no one wants, or needs, another collection of standard versions of Bowie tracks, and at least this isn’t that. While this musical accompaniment includes classic songs spanning Bowie’s career, it includes previously unheard material, unique mixes created for the film and it incorporates dialogue from Bowie himself. You have my attention!

Highlights include a previously unreleased live medley of ‘The Jean Genie/Love Me Do/The Jean Genie’ recorded live at the final Ziggy Stardust concert at Hammersmith Odeon in 1973, featuring Jeff Beck on guitar. Other rarities include an early version of the Hunky Dory favourite ‘Quicksand’ and a previously unreleased live version of ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll With Me’ from the legendary 1974 ‘Soul Tour’. Have a listen to the ‘Moonage Daydream Mix’ of ‘Modern Love’, above.

There’s no vinyl version (for now), just a 2CD set which offers a generous 43 tracks. Update: A 3LP vinyl edition will be released in spring next year!

Moonage Daydream: Music From The Film is released on 18 November 2022. The 3LP vinyl edition is released on 31 March 2023.
