Deep Purple’s Made In Japan gets six-disc deluxe edition

Deep Purple’s classic 1972 live album Made In Japan is to be reissued as 5CD+Blu-ray and 10LP boxsets featuring newly remixed versions of all three of its concerts, plus both stereo and Atmos mixes by Steven Wilson. Wilson’s stereo mix is also available separately as a 2LP version.

Featuring Deep Purple’s Mk II line-up of Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Roger Glover and Ian Paice, Made In Japan was recorded to 8-track by the band’s regular studio engineer Martin Birch during concerts at Osaka’s Festival Hall on 15-16th August 1972 and Tokyo’s Budokan on 17 August. Originally intended solely for release in Japan, it was eventually released in Britain in December that year, with a US release following in March 1973, where it reached No 6 in the Billboard 200 chart. In the box set’s sleevenotes, Glover states: “We came halfway around the world and found the audience singing every word. It was magical.”

Wilson says of his new mixes: “It’s all completely as it happened on the night. The album has a power and sense of abandon that they never quite captured in the studio. Hopefully, this new mix makes it feel even more like you’re there.”

Richard Digby-Smith has created new mixes of the three original concerts for this new reissue – billed as a “50th Anniversary Edition”, but released 52 years to the day after the first Osaka concert – and it also includes a German single edit of ‘Black Night’, a Mexican single edit of ‘Space Truckin’’ and a US single edit of ‘Smoke On The Water’.

Both vinyl and CD sets are similar to what was released back in 2014 but the key differences are the new stereo mixes of the full concerts and Steven Wilson’s mixes. The only info provided on the blu-ray is that it contains Wilson’s Atmos Mix, but it is quite likely to include his stereo mix as well (also this is not confirmed at this stage). The 10LP set is D2C only which means artist store and Universal channels.

This Made In Japan super deluxe edition is released on 15 August 2025 via UMR.
