Elton John’s 1975 studio album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy will be reissued across a number of formats for its 50th anniversary, including as an SDE exclusive blu-ray audio with a immersive Dolby Atmos Mix.
His ninth record in six years, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy was a concept album devised with Elton’s longtime collaborator and lyricist Bernie Taupin, telling the chronological story of the early years of Elton (‘Captain Fantastic’) and Bernie’s (‘the Brown Dirt Cowboy’) musical careers in London as they struggled to break through.
Produced by Gus Dudgeon, it features the single “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” and was the first album in history to debut at #1 on the US Billboard 200. It sold 1.4 million copies in its first four days and remained at the top of the chart for 7 weeks.
Greg Penny has created brand new Dolby Atmos and 5.1 mixes of Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy which feature on the blu-ray alongside the original album in hi-res 96/24 and 17 bonus tracks, in stereo.

Additionally, to satisfy demand, we are making available a small quantity of Elton John’s Diamonds: The Ultimate Greatest Hits Collection on blu-ray audio. #31 in the SDE Surround Series, this features 48 landmark hits in Dolby Atmos and sold out quickly, early in 2025.
Other 50th anniversary formats of Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy includes a superb looking deluxe 2LP coloured vinyl set (with bonus tracks) and a 2CD edition (which features the same 17 bonus tracks as on the blu-ray).
