In 1981, BBC Radio presented a full-cast dramatisation of JRR Tolkien’s masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings. The cast included Ian Holm as Frodo (20 years later Holm played Bilbo in Peter Jackson’s films), Michael Hordern (Barry Lyndon, Gandhi, Paddington) as Gandalf, John Le Mesurier (Dad’s Army) as Bilbo, Bill Nighy (Love Actually) as Sam, Peter Vaughan (Game of Thrones), and Simon Cadell (Watership Down).
This 13 hours of drama is to be released as deluxe 14LP coloured vinyl box set and 14CD package, both featuring standalone bonus discs of the series’ celebrated soundtrack by the composer Stephen Oliver.
The 14LP box features “Clear and Forged Gold” coloured vinyl. Each box set is individually numbered and features beautiful original artwork, re-imagining the landscape of Tolkien’s Middle- earth. It comes with an eight-page booklet, featuring behind the scenes cast photos and a note about the making of the
series by dramatist Brian Sibley, is also included along with full cast and credits for every episode.
This is also available as a limited edition and numbered deluxe 14CD box set and both formats will be released on 4 December 2026, via Demon Music.
