Tears For Fears / Songs From The Big Chair 40th anniversary reissue

Quick pre-order from the SDE shop

Tears For Fears’ 1985 album Songs From The Big Chair is being reissued for its 40th anniversary across a number of formats, including as an SDE exclusive blu-ray with a brand new Dolby Atmos Mix by Steven Wilson.

The band’s second album became a global sensation, topping the US charts and spawning five hit singles, ‘Mothers Talk’, ‘Shout’, ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’, ‘Head Over Heels’, and ‘I Believe’. ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’ and ‘Shout’ both reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

I co-compiled the 4CD+2DVD box released in 2014 (a set often touted as a high point in pop reissues) and I’m therefore delighted to be involved again by offering fans an SDE-exclusive blu-ray edition of Songs From The Big Chair, the fourth Tears For Fears release to be part of the ongoing SDE Surround Series (after The Tipping Point in 2022, The Hurting in 2023 and last year’s Songs For A Nervous Planet).

For this release, as well as creating a new Dolby Atmos Mix, Steven Wilson has revisited his 5.1 Surround and Stereo Mixes that were created in 2014. While Wilson stresses that he’s still proud of those mixes, he says that “the intervening 11 years working in surround and immersive audio have given me a lot more experience, so I thought it would be interesting to revisit these mixes with fresh  ears. Both have consequently been revised for 2025, primarily in an attempt to be even more faithful to the 1985 album mix. This original mix for me is still definitive, but as a necessary step on the way to creating the 5.1 and Atmos mixes, the 2025 stereo remix is included here as an alternative”.

Fans might recall that multi-track tapes for both parts of ‘Broken’ were missing in 2014 and unfortunately they are still missing, presumed lost. A decade ago, a pseudo 5.1 surround version of this song was created using software called Penteo to upmix from the stereo. This worked pretty well, but this time around more recent advances in the technology allowed Steven Wilson to split the original 1985 mix of ‘Broken’ into several individual ‘stems’ (vocals, guitar, bass, drums etc.), and using these he was able achieve a greater degree of spatial separation. Still not comparable with a genuine remix from the multitrack tapes, but at least providing more consistency with the rest of the remixed album.

All three Steven Wilson audio streams (Atmos, 5.1 & Stereo) are also available in instrumental form on the SDE exclusive blu-ray. Below is a summary of the audio streams on the SDE exclusive blu-ray:

  • 2025 Steven Wilson Atmos Mix (48/24)
  • 2025 Steven Wilson 5.1 Mix (96/24)
  • 2025 Steven Wilson Hi-Res Stereo Mix (96/24)
  • 2025 Steven Wilson Dolby Atmos Mix – Instrumental (48/24)
  • 2025 Steven Wilson 5.1 Mix – Instrumental (96/24)
  • 2025 Steven Wilson Hi-Res Stereo Mix – Instrumental(96/24)
  • 1985 Original Hi-Res Stereo Mix – non-limited 2022 Miles Showell remaster (96/24)

Additionally, this Songs From The Big Chair blu-ray features 12 bonus tracks (stereo only) comprised of all the extended remixes issued in the UK of the various singles, including original and remix 12-inches for many singles, as well as the Extended Mix of non-album single ‘The Way You Are’, which was issued in the UK 15 months before the release of the Songs From The Big Chair. This is CD 3 of the 2014 box in 48/24 hi-res stereo (see tracklisting below).

Other formats in this reissue campaign are as follows

  • 3CD deluxe edition (CDs 1-3 from the 2014 box set)

The booklet in the blu-ray features track-by-track annotation from Roland Orzabal, Curt Smith, producer Chris Hughes and A&R man Dave Bates, taken from my interviews in 2014 as well as a note from Steven Wilson on his approach to remixing the album in Dolby Atmos.

This Songs From The Big Chair blu-ray audio is #52 in the ongoing SDE Surround Series and will be released on 14 November 2025. It will be packaged similarly to previous editions and ships with a free, collectible SDE Surround Series slipcase.

Canadian singer songwriter Neko Case’s eighth studio album is self-produced and her first new music this decade. She’s touring North American next month.

Kate Bush / Best of The Other Sides

Kate Bush will release a new compilation next month called Best of The Other Sides.

The Other Sides originally consisted of 12-inch mixes, B-sides and cover versions and took up the entirety of the Remastered in Vinyl IV box set in 2018. It was also available on CD in the second of the two CD box sets that were issued at the same time, and then released as a standalone 4CD set in March 2019.

What is effectively now a ‘highlights’ version doesn’t feature anything new, but there are some small changes. Kate says that ‘Experiment IV’ and ‘You Want Alchemy?’ have been remastered especially for this compilation and “both include a small edit”. Kate adds “I felt ‘Experiment IV’ would benefit from a longer intro featuring Alan Murphy’s magnificent guitar”.

Bush also says that The Sensual World CD bonus track ‘Walk Straight Down the Middle’ “has also benefitted from being re-eq’d” (remastered). “Hope you enjoy the tweaks!” is her final message.

Unfortunately, the full tracklisting of Best of The Other Sides has not been made available (update: as of 26 Sep, it’s now officially available – see below) but as well as the tracks above it will include Kate’s covers of ‘Rocket Man’, ‘The Man I Love’ as well as ‘Running Up That Hill’ B-side ‘Under The Ivy’. We do know there is 11 tracks in total, so that leaves five unaccounted for…

It will be released on 180g coloured ‘Lothlorien’ vinyl and on CD on 31 October 2025, via Fish People. You can ordered the coloured vinyl from the SDE shop.

Bob Dylan / Through The Open Window – Bootleg Series Vol 18 1956-1963

8CD box set of Dylan’s early years • 2CD and 4LP highlights

Through The Open Window is the latest in Bob Dylan’s long-running Bootleg Series – Vol 18, in fact – and it covers the years 1956-1963, telling the story of Dylan’s emergence and maturation as a songwriter and performer, from Minnesota to the Greenwich Village bohemia of the early 1960s.

The 8CD box set version of this release includes rare Columbia Records outtakes, recordings made at club dates, in tiny informal gatherings, in friends’ apartments, and at jam sessions in long-gone musicians’ hangouts. Many of the recordings are exceedingly rare; others have never been presented in any form.

Through The Open Window – Bootleg Series Vol 18: 1956-1963 – 8CD box set (click image to enlarge)

These are Dylan’s early years, when he honed his talent, and transformed traditional folk songs and lyric sketches into songs, including ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ and ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’’. It concludes with a previously unreleased recording, in its entirety, of Dylan’s landmark concert at Carnegie Hall on 26 October 1963 – a concert also marked the end of the beginning of Dylan’s long career.

In total, the 8CD set includes a massive 139 tracks – with 48 never-before released performances – and it includes a 125-page hardcover book with extensive liner notes by Sean Wilentz and over 100 rare photographs. The 2CD and 4LP ‘highlight’ editions include 42 tracks.

Through The Open Window – Bootleg Series Vol 18: 1956-1963 will be released via Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings on 31 October 2025.

Propaganda / A Secret Wish SDE exclusive blu-ray

Quick pre-order at the SDE shop

Propaganda’s classic 1985 debut album A Secret Wish is being reissued as an SDE exclusive blu-ray audio and features brand new Dolby Atmos, 5.1 and Stereo mixes by David Kosten.

A CD box set called A Secret Sense of Rhythm, A Secret Sense of Sin will also be available. This expands the album offers rare remixes and live tracks across six discs. Finally a vinyl LP edition featuring David Kosten’s new stereo mix, will also be available.

Formed in Düsseldorf in 1982, Propaganda signed with ZTT Records in 1983 and released their first single ‘Dr Mabuse’ in 1984. The album was written by Mertens and Dörper and received considerable critical acclaim when released in early July 1985 and peaked at #16 on the UK Albums Chart.

Other singles from A Secret Wish include ‘Duel‘, which reached #21 in the UK singles chart and ‘p:Machinery‘ which was issued a month after the album’s original release.

The album was rebuilt for Dolby Atmos from the multi-track tapes by David Kosten who says “I bought A Secret Wish on the day it was released in 1985 – I still remember playing the vinyl and having a wonderful kind of out-of-body experience on hearing Jewel for the first time. This was music to be immersed in and inspired by, with vast creative ambition and endless sonic bravery”.

This new blu-ray features the Dolby Atmos Mix, as well as his 5.1 mix and stereo versions. All Kosten’s 2025 mixes are based on the original vinyl version of the album (as opposed to the later CD edition).

Additionally, full instrumental versions of the album are available in Atmos, 5.1 and Stereo and there’s also headphones-only binaural versions available as vocal and instrumental versions.

Finally, the original 1985 stereo mixes of A Secret Wish are included on this disc in vinyl and CD variants

The Beatles’ Anthology 4 now available separately

Almost four weeks after the Anthology Collection was announced, Apple Corps and UMR have made The Beatles’ Anthology 4 available separately, as standalone 2CD and 3LP releases.

By de-coupling Anthology 4 from the 8CD and 12LP vinyl boxes, Apple have effectively addressed the criticism voiced on many forums, including SDE, that it was a step too far to ask people to re-purchase three double albums – even if they are remastered – to get the new one.

2CD version of Anthology 4

Without the ballast of what, for many, would be redundant discs, Anthology 4 can now shine under its own spotlight. Newly curated by Giles Martin, it includes 13 previously unreleased demos and session recordings and other rare tracks. It also features new mixes of the 1995 and 1996 singles ‘Free As A Bird’ and ‘Real Love’. They have been freshened up by original producer, Jeff Lynne, using de-mixed John Lennon vocals (the original ‘Free As A Bird’ music video has also been restored). ‘Now and Then’, the last Beatles song, is also on Anthology 4

The 2CD version of Anthology 4 is housed in a gatefold digisleeve with a 48 page booklet with tracks notes by Kevin Howlett. The 3LP vinyl version is pressed on 180g vinyl in a triple gatefold sleeve.

Both formats of Anthology 4 are released on 21 November 2025, via UMR, the same day as the Anthology Collection box sets (which are still happening).

Buckingham Nicks album finally gets a reissue on vinyl and CD

Buckingham Nicks / Buckingham Nicks CD, Vinyl

Buckingham Nicks, the only studio album by Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks as a duo, is reissued for the first time.

Sarah McLachlan / Better Broken

Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan returns with her first new album in 11 years. Better Broken was produced by Tony Berg and Will Maclellan.

Pink Floyd / Wish You Were Here 50th anniversary reissue

Box set, 3LP vinyl, 2CD, coloured vinyl and standalone blu-ray

Pink Floyd’s 1975 album Wish You Were Here is getting the full 50th anniversary treatment in December, with a whole suite of physical products available for pre-order, most of which include unreleased studio and live audio.

Released exactly 50 years ago today, the album was the follow-up to 1973’s The Dark Side of the Moon and famously embraced themes of absence, isolation and transience. It’s only a five-track album, but ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond‘ (split across two tracks) accounts for more than 50 percent of the 44 minute running time. Everything is iconic on this record, from ‘Have A Cigar‘ – Roger Waters’ scathing indictment of the music industry, sung by Roy Harper – with the infamous line “Oh by the way, which one’s Pink”, to the industrial throbbing soundscapes of ‘Welcome to the Machine‘. The title track was one of four songs played at Live 8, in 2005.

Wish You Were Here 50th anniversary super deluxe box (click to enlarge)

All of the formats of the 2025 reissue features six previously unreleased alternate versions and demos, except the single vinyl LP (which is available on ‘flame’ coloured vinyl). These rarities include two demos of ‘The Machine Song’ (which would become ‘Welcome to the Machine’), Take 1 of ‘Wish You Were Here’ and a new stereo mix of the entirety of ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ (Parts 1-9).

‘Wine Glasses’, ‘Have a Cigar (Alternate Version)’ and ‘Wish You Were Here (featuring Stéphane Grappelli)’ are repeated from the 2011 reissue.

The Wish You Were Here 50th anniversary formats are as follows:

  • 2CD+4LP+7″+blu-ray super deluxe box set
  • 2CD deluxe
  • 3LP deluxe
  • single LP ‘flame’ coloured vinyl
  • Standalone blu-ray audio

The 2CD and 3LP editions feature the album plus the nine bonus tracks discussed above and the box set features the same content (but the three LPs are exclusive on CLEAR vinyl) and adds an exclusive fourth clear vinyl LP: Live At Wembley 1974, plus a replica Japanese seven-inch single of ‘Have A Cigar’ b/w ‘Welcome To The Machine’. The bonus Wembley LP only features two tracks: ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ and ‘You’ve Got To Be Crazy’, which means ‘Raving and Drooling’ from the same gig remains exclusive to the 2011 reissue. So while there’s some exclusivity around the formats (clear vinyl, Wembley on vinyl) there is no exclusive audio in the box set. Everything is available somewhere else. If you are wondering about ‘memorabilia’ (marbles?), the box comes with a hardcover book with unseen photographs, a comic book tour programme and a Knebworth poster.

The standalone blu-ray (click image to pre-order from the SDE shop)

The blu-ray in the box set is fantastic, in terms of content, and is identical to the standalone blu-ray. It features the album in the following audio streams, including a brand new Dolby Atmos Mix, by James Guthrie.

  • 2025 Dolby Atmos Mix
  • 2011 5.1 Surround Mix
  • 1975 Stereo Mix
  • 1975 4.0 Quad Mix

Additionally, the blu-ray offers the 9 bonus tracks from the 2CD and 3LP, in hi-res stereo. But most interestingly, exclusive to the blu-ray (and digital), is something called Live Bootleg. This is 16 live recordings captured by the renowned bootlegger Mike Millard at Pink Floyd’s Los Angeles Sports Arena concert on 26 April 26 1975, meticulously restored and remastered by Steven Wilson! The Blu-ray Disc also repeats the 1975 concert films and Storm Thorgerson’s Short Film (from 2000) from the 2011 DVD and blu-ray.

Wish You Were Here will be reissued on 12 December 2025, via Sony Music. Consider supporting SDE by pre-ordering the standalone blu-ray of Wish You Were Here from the SDE shop. Other format links will appear below, shortly once available.

Tom Petty’s Wildflowers issued as an audiophile ‘One-Step’ vinyl edition

Tom Petty’s 1994 album Wildflowers, was subject to an extensive reissue campaign back in late 2020, but the interest in the album continues with the release, today, on blu-ray of the Somewhere You Feel Free: The Making of Wildflowers documentary (details here) and the news that Wildflowers will be reissued as a special 2LP One-Step vinyl release in October, via Because Sounds Matters and Warner Records.

Limited to 6,000 numbered copies, this pressing has been cut directly from the original master tapes by engineer Chris Bellman, overseen by Petty’s longtime audio engineer Ryan Ulyate and cut for a true all-analog presentation with exceptional clarity and depth. Housed inside a high quality, uniquely designed and numbered slipcase, the enclosed LP packaging will feature a double-pocket gatefold tip-on jacket.

The details are summarised below:

  • Audio Source: Original Analog Master Tapes
  • Vinyl Compound: Neotech VR900-D2 180g High Performance Vinyl
  • Vinyl Mastering: Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering

Somewhere You Feel Free: The Making of Wildflowers is released on blu-ray today.

*THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED* The winner will be announced shortly.

Prince / Around the World in a Day reissue

Prince’s 1985 album Around the World in a Day is being reissued across a number of formats to mark the album’s 40th anniversary.

This was Prince’s seventh studio album and it features the hit singles ‘Raspberry Beret’, ‘Paisley Park’, ‘Pop Life’ and ‘America’. These weren’t released across all territories and were received differently, when they were. For example ‘Pop Life’ was a top 10 hit in the US but stalled at No 60 in the UK. Similarly, ‘Raspberry Beret’ reached No 2 in America but peaked at No 25 in the UK, where ‘Paisley Park’ did moderately better (No 18 in the UK, not released in the US). The album didn’t reach number one in Britain either, where despite all his critical success, Prince would have to wait for 1988’s Lovesexy before the commercial validation of topping the UK album chart.

Limited blue marble vinyl edition of Around The World in a Day

The audio for this reissue campaign has been newly remastered in by Bernie Grundman and 2CD and 3LP deluxe editions feature bonus remixes, including the near 22-minute version of ‘America’. Bonus tracks are not identical across both deluxe sets: The 3LP vinyl features nine tracks while the 2CD features 13.

All other formats all feature the remastered 9-track album. These are limited blue marbled vinyl LP, black vinyl and single CD. Around in the World in a Day has been remixed in Dolby Atmos, but disappointingly, a Blu-ray Audio version is not part of this reissue campaign. Hopefully, one may emerge later.

Around the World in a Day is reissued on 21 November 2025, via Rhino.

Little Feat / The Last Record Album

Little Feat’s fifth studio album, The Last Record Album, is being reissued for its 50th anniversary.

The title and cover of the 1975 album references Peter Bogdanovich’s 1971 film The Last Picture Show and features eight tracks, including ‘All That You Dream’, ‘Long Distance Love’ and ‘Mercenary Territory’.

The reissue expands the album massively on CD with a 4CD box set on offer with a new remaster of the long-player, 12 demos/outtakes on CD 2 and then two discs of live material from the Orpheum Theatre in Boston just two weeks after the release of the album. The 2LP vinyl reissue pairs the remastered album with the 12 demos/outtakes.

The Last Record Album will be reissued on 24 October 2025, via Rhino.

Paul McCartney announces WINGS, a new compilation featuring 32 Wings tracks

Quick pre-order • Blu-ray Audio with Atmos Mixes • 3LP vinyl • 2CD & more

Paul McCartney has today announced WINGS, a new Wings ‘best of’ that will be available across a number of formats including a McCartney and SDE-exclusive blu-ray audio with Dolby Atmos Mixes.

Unlike the Wingspan compilation from 2001, this new collection sticks strictly to songs from Wings albums (and Wings non-album singles) and so doesn’t include any solo hits adjacent to this era (such as ‘Another Day’ or ‘Coming Up’) or anything from 1971’s Ram (credited to Paul and Linda McCartney), despite ‘Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey’ being a US No 1 hit single in September 1971.

The 32 tracks on 3LP, 2CD and blu-ray audio formats all feature songs from the seven Wings studio albums (Wild Life, Red Rose Speedway, Band on the Run, Venus and Mars, At the Speed of Sound, London Town and Back to the Egg) along with non-album hits such as ‘Hi Hi Hi’, ‘Junior’s Farm’, ‘Live and Let Die’, ‘Mull of Kintyre’ and ‘Goodnight Tonight’. Additionally, the curio that is ‘Soily’ – a superb McCartney rocker that doesn’t exist as a proper studio recording –  is included on WINGS, in its One Hand Clapping guise. As well as the formats mentioned above, a 12-track single CD and single LP offering will be available.

The McCartney & SDE Exclusive WINGS blu-ray audio, pictured with 16-page booklet

The Macca & SDE-exclusive Blu-ray Audio is likely to be the format that most excites SDE readers and McCartney fans. For the first time, tracks are available in Dolby Atmos on a physical product. The mixes are by Giles Martin and Steve Orchard. 14 of them have been available in recent times on streaming, but 17 of them are unheard in this format, including tracks from un-reissued latter albums, such as ‘With A Little Luck’, ‘London Town’ and ‘I’ve Had Enough’ (from 1978’s London Town) and ‘Getting Closer’ and ‘Arrow Through Me’ (from 1979’s Back to the Egg). 7 out of the 10 tracks from the US version of Band on the Run also feature on this compilation.

Blu-ray Audio audio streams summary

  • Dolby Atmos Mix (48/24)
  • 5.1 Surround Mix (48/24)
  • Hi-Res Stereo Mixes (96/24)

This blu-ray audio is presented as a ‘softpack’ with a 16-page booklet. It’s a McCartney and SDE exclusive product and is not available anywhere outside the SDE shop and McCartney’s online store. It probably goes without saying that supporting SDE with your purchase really helps with our ability to bring you future blu-rays exclusives by McCartney or Wings, or anyone else!

WINGS will be released on 7 November 2025, via Capitol/Ume. Pre-order your copy of this limited edition product from the SDE shop using this link or the button below.

Blondie / No Exit reissue

Blondie’s 1999 album No Exit will be reissued next month as 2CD and 2LP vinyl editions.

The album was their first for 17 years at the time and features what was, frankly, a surprise UK number one single in ‘Maria’ along with its less successful follow-up, ‘Nothing Is Real But The Girl’.

The new 2CD deluxe edition features a remastered version of the standard 14-track album on the first disc while CD 2 offers Japan-only bonus track ‘Hot Shot’ (with additional production and mix by David Wrench) along with a selection of seven remixes (from the many that were issued back in the day).

First time on vinyl for Blondie’s No Exit

The 2LP edition is actually the first time the album has appeared on vinyl. The album is spread over three sides with the fourth side reserved for ‘Hot Shot’ and three remixes. Both formats feature new sleeve notes and “mastering and sound restoration” is by Jessica Thompson.

These expanded formats find no place for tracks recorded at the Lyceum Theatre in November 1998 which appeared on CD 2 of a European deluxe edition of the album and on various CD singles. The radio edit of ‘Maria’ is another notable omission.

No Exit will be reissued by BMG on 31 October 2025.
