Joni Mitchell / ‘Joni’s Jazz’ all-eras box set

8LP and 4CD versions include unreleased demos

Joni Mitchell celebrates her jazz catalogue with a 61-track all-eras box set, Joni’s Jazz, to be released in September.

Available in 4CD or 8LP vinyl editions, the songs have been chosen by Mitchell, who has also contributed new sleeve notes. They date from 1968’s ‘Marcie’ from Song To A Seagull to a performance of ‘Summertime’ from 2022’s Newport Folk Festival, which was Mitchell’s first live show since 2002.

Joni’s Jazz includes two previously unreleased demos, of ‘Be Cool’ and ‘Moon At The Window’. These were recorded in 1980 for Mitchell’s 1982 album Wild Things Run Fast. There are also live versions of ‘Hejira’ and ‘Goodbye Pork Hat’ from a 1979 concert at Santa Barbara County Bowl, plus Mitchell’s guest performances for Herbie Hancock and Kyle Eastwood.

The idea for Joni’s Jazz was first hinted at by Mitchell made in the sleeve notes for last year’s box set Archives Vol 4, in which she stated: “People ask me my favourite of my favourite albums. It’s going to be Joni’s Jazz.” The compilation is dedicated to Wayne Shorter, following his death in 2023. Mitchell writes of Shorter in her sleevenotes: “It was a joy to play with him. He will be missed, but he will remain alive for me in his music.”

Mitchell has not released a new album since Shine in 2007, but has played a handful of concerts since Newport Folk Festival, including her first Grammys performance in 2024.

Joni’s Jazz is released on 5 September via Rhino.
