Frankie Goes to Hollywood / Frankie Said (Japan Edition)

Frankie Goes To Hollywood / Frankie Said Japanese 2CD Edition
Frankie Said (Japan Edition) front cover

The Frankie Goes to Hollywood compilation Frankie Said was released at the beginning of last week, and is a successful fusion of punter pleasing hits and fanboy rarities. The competitively priced ‘best of’ benefits from its simplicity – all the big singles, along with a few choice album cuts and a couple of the best selling twelve inch singles of all time. Sorted.

However, news reaches us that ZTT Japan have upped the ante and created their own special version of Frankie Said that takes the lean, naturally aspirated European edition of the compilation, and adds a supercharger to the front of it.

Out this week / 12 Nov 2012

Check your calendars! This week sees ‘new’ releases from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley and The Doors…

The Beatles / Stereo Vinyl Box Set – Did you or didn’t you? It’s certainly a lot of cash, but the fab four’s entire output on heavyweight vinyl, remastered, is very hard to resist. The albums can be bought separately for around £20 each, but you don’t get the nice book that comes with the box. More here.

The Beatles / Stereo Vinyl Remasters box set

The Rolling Stones / GRRR! – More monkey business from Jagger, Richards et al. This set comes in a few different editions including the all-singing, all-dancing Super Deluxe Edition Box Set. We have one of the later and will be posting pictures soon. More here.

The Rolling Stones / Grr! / New hits collection

Elvis / Prince From Another Planet – The Deluxe Edition of this release offers two full sets from The King  – newly remixed – when he played Madison Square Garden in 1972, along with some unearthed Super 8 film of the performance on DVD, sync’d to the audio. More here.

Elvis Presley / Prince From Another Planet Legacy Edition

Paul McCartney / Live Kisses Blu-ray – As a big McCartney fan I’m finding it hard to get excited about this release. In fact, I will be receiving a free video download as a ‘thank you’ for being a premium member of Macca’s website (they are closing that service down) so will wait patiently for the Wings Over America reissue! More here.

Paul McCartney / Live Kisses Blu-ray

The Doors / Live at the Bowl ’68 Vinyl Edition – The CD came out three weeks ago, but this week sees the release of the double vinyl version of this live set with restored audio. More here.

New movie box set blog SuperDeluxeBluray launches today!

SuperDeluxeBluray / New blog

We love bringing you all the latest news and reviews on super deluxe music box sets, but like most of you, we also LOVE movies, particularly on high definition BLU-RAY!

So we are proud to announce that a new sister blog launches today called SuperDeluxeBluray

Just like this blog, SuperDeluxeBluray will concentrate on box sets, but of course these will be movie box sets. All Blu-ray releases – no DVDs, unless they are included in so-called ‘combo’ boxes where you get Blu-ray, DVD and sometimes digital copies.

The new blog will focus on high end deluxe sets – boxes with special packaging, limited edition releases, exclusive releases that might only be available in specific countries, and career-spanning sets from the world’s best directors.

I hope you will take a look. There are quite a few posts up already, and a competition is up and running for someone to win a Blade Runner 20th Anniversary Box Set.

You can also join in the fun on the SuperDeluxeBluray facebook page and follow the blog on twitter.

Thank you!

Japanese CD of the day / Paul Young

Paul Young / The Secret Of Association Japanese CD of the dayThis 2009 Japanese ‘paper sleeve’ (or mini LP CD) reissue of Paul Young‘s 1985 album The Secret Of Association has one big attraction (aside from the typically excellent packaging). It is the only CD to date that contains the full extended version of his US number one record Every Time You Go Away (a cover of the Hall and Oates song). It is a bonus track at the end of the album, after Man In The Iron Mask (itself a bonus on the original CD).

The Edsel 2CD reissue of 2007 did list the extended version of Everytime You Go Away on disc two, but disappointingly this was an error, and it played the seven-inch version.

The original UK cassette included the extended version in place of the normal album version, but the ’80s CD didn’t. Four other extended remixes featured on that tape, including I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down, Everything Must Change, Hot Fun and I Was In Chains. ‘Playhouse’ and Everything Must Change appeared on the Edsel release but Hot Fun and I Was In Chains have never been issued on CD in their extended form.

Bee Gees / Mythology 4CD reissue

The Bee Gees / Mythology reissueRhino have been doing a great job reissuing old box sets at budget prices. Releases so far have included Fleetwood Mac‘s 25 Years: The Chain and Rod Stewart‘s Storyteller, both dating from the early nineties.

For their next release it is a little surprising to see them tackle the Bee Gees‘ four-disc Mythology box, because it was only originally released two years ago and wasn’t particularly expensive in the first place.

As with the other releases, the packaging is transformed, in this case from a ‘bookset’ to four CDs in a ‘fat box’ with an outer slip case. Unlike the other issues, this sees a new cover treatment with photos of the four Gibb brothers on a red background replacing the elaborate Gibb crest from the previous box.

The music is of course the same, with this set originally promoted both as a 50th anniversary collection and the Gibb brothers’ family album. A disc is dedicated to each brother: Barry, Robin, Maurice and Andy. At the time this compilation was put together, Barry and Robin chose their own songs, with Maurice’s songs selected by his widow Yvonne and Andy’s songs selected by his daughter Peta.

This new version of Mythology is out in early December for most territories, although it is already available in Germany.
