Remembering… The Beatles Anthology

Paul Sinclair recalls 1995 and his ‘Compressed Anthology’ promo video!

It’s hard to convey just how exciting The Beatles Anthology was back in 1995. The Beatles had split up in early 1970 and we’d endured a quarter of a century with no outtakes or unheard recordings being made officially available from the archive. Even in 1987-88, when the studio albums were reissued on CD there were no bonus tracks at all, just the albums. Perhaps surprising, when you consider how common extra tracks are in the modern era and how record labels were using bonus tracks (normally 12-inch remixes or B-sides) as a carrot for fans on early CDs.

That’s not to say Capitol and EMI didn’t do their best to exploit the catalogue with compilations such as Rock ‘n’ Roll Music (1976), Love Songs (1977), Rarities (1978/80), 20 Greatest Hits (1982) and oddities such as the Reel Music compilation and ‘The Beatles’ Movie Medley’ single, which feels as tacky now as it did back then (both 1982). The problem was, while occasionally a mono or stereo rarity might slip out, EMI did not have permission to use any unreleased recordings and it wasn’t until the end of the 1980s that lawsuits and other legal matters were resolved in a way that encouraged the band to open up the vaults for what became The Beatles Anthology.

In 1995 I was living in Bayswater in London and my friend and flatmate Aubrey (RIP) had just started working the “the media” and somehow managed to blag a preview VHS of episode 1 of Anthology about a week before the programme was broadcast. This added to our excitement, even if much the narrative was very familiar indeed, if you were any kind of Beatles fan and had read any of the books, with the predictable growing-up-in-Liverpool stories and much time devoted to Hamburg (whilst a spoof, ‘The Rutles’ did all this just as well 17 years earlier!).

I was much more excited about the release of the three planned volumes of albums than the actual documentary, if truth be told, but of course while Anthology 1 was issued at the same time as the TV programmes, we had to wait until March 1996 for Anthology 2 and the best part of a whole year for Anthology 3 (October 1996). So any bits of unheard audio used in the documentary from later periods (such as the ‘laughing’ take of Revolver’s ‘And Your Bird Can Sing’) was quite a big deal at the time of broadcast.

It’s also easy to forget just how rare some of the footage was. In a post Peter Jackson, The Beatles Get Back era, the rooftop footage from the Let It Be film is ever present, familiar, and easily accessible, but there was no way to view this in 1995 unless you owned a dodgy bootleg VHS of Let It Be that was invariably awful quality. The film had been commercially unavailable since Betamax versions floated around in the marketplace in the early 1980s. So at the beginning of episode one of The Beatles Anthology series, when we get a mini-history of the band set to ‘In My Life’, seeing even the briefest of sneak peeks from Let It Be was very exciting.

Coverage in the ‘Culture’ section of The Sunday Times on 12 November 1995. Click to enlarge.

I videotaped all six episodes when they were shown in the UK on ITV. It was annoying that we had to endure adverts during the original broadcast in Britain, but The Beatles have always known their own commercial value and while the BBC always felt like the best fit, presumably it all came down to pounds, shillings and pence and the commercial network got the gig.

I was working in a post-production facility (called Sunrise Post Productions) in the West End of London in 1995 (in Sackville Street, coincidentally just around the corner from Savile Row) and this was a time when non-linear video tape editing was just starting to happen in the broadcast and film industry. Where I worked was equipped with what was at the time state-of-the-art Avid Media Composers and Avid Film Composers (the latter supported 24 frames per second). My job was to take care of bookings for the facility, but my lovely boss (Ray Nunney) gave me the keys to the place and let me come in at the weekend and use all the equipment! This was amazing because, as I say, it was long before non-linear editing had hit home computers and there would be simply no other way to do this.

So I carted in my VHS player from Bayswater on the No 23 Routemaster bus (I think it was an S-VHS model) and using all of my VHS tapes from the telly and some CDs and decided I’d teach myself how to using the machines and start to learn about video/film editing. The idea was to create a kind of mini-promo film of the series using the footage and the band’s music. Just for fun.

I can’t remember how long this took me. Probably quite a few weekends – it likely dragged into early 1996 –  but it felt fantastically creative and I still have the original Betacam tape and VHS onto which I outputted the finished edit almost 30 years ago. They’ve sat in a box in the loft all that time. It only ever got one ‘public’ airing, when my friend Aubrey sneakily played it in a VHS rental shop where he had a short-lived job for a few months in early 1996! Needless to say no one noticed.

However, I had completely forgotten that in 2011 I put what I had called ‘Compressed Anthology’ up on YouTube. Never promoted and never mentioned, but it has been there. With all the Anthology anniversary chatter it occurred to me very recently that I had vague memories of uploading it. I was sure it must have been blocked, but no, it is still there, although seemingly only visible in some territories.

Anyway, below is the video created by 25 year old me. Sorry if you can’t view this, due to YouTube restrictions, but I’m hoping most of you can. Here we are 30 years later (further away from Anthology than Anthology originally was from 1970) and it’s rewarding that I have a platform where I can share it amongst fans who might enjoy the video. Watch it below (stay to the very end).

The Cure / The Show of a Lost World

The Cure’s 2024 concert at London’s Troxy venue is being released, in full, on blu-ray and DVD.

The Show of a Lost World is described as being a “recut, remixed and remastered film” of the 1 November, 2024 performance, when the band unveiled the new album by performing it in full, in front of 3,000 fans.

The concert film was directed by Nick Wickham and there is a new surround sound mix by Robert Smith, which may not be a good thing, since the Atmos Mix of the studio album was not rated highly by fans.

There is also no 4k version of this blu-ray, which is irritating since there’s no way it wasn’t filmed in 4k and you cannot rule out a future 4k edition hitting the marketplace.

The Show of a Lost World will be released on 13 December 2025, via Polydor. A DVD edition is also available.

Frankie Goes To Hollywood SDE blu-ray – update

As hopefully most of you who have ordered the Frankie Goes To Hollywood Welcome to the Pleasuredome SDE exclusive blu-ray know by now, it has been subject to manufacturing delays.

As per the original message, we were hoping to start shipping Frankie around about now, but unfortunately it’s going to take a few weeks longer than planned. Shipping will start the week commencing 8 December 2025.

I know this is disappointing, but I can only reiterate that we are very sorry for this delay, especially as I know many of you are waiting for Propaganda, the Frankie box set, or some other titles that have been ordered at the same time.

Thanks for your patience. I mean it. This situation pains me because it’s a great product and we want you to have it as soon as possible. When shipping starts it will take a at least three or four days to get through all the pre-orders so don’t panic if you know people who have received a despatch email and you haven’t. We’ll work through them all as quickly as we can once the stock arrives.

If you haven’t ordered this blu-ray but are interested, you can order at the SDE shop using this link or the button below.

Thanks
Paul

David Bowie / Station to Station 50th anniversary

David Bowie’s 1976 album Station to Station will be reissued across two vinyl formats for its 50th anniversary, early next year.

The album features the transatlantic top 10 hit ‘Golden Years’, as well as the singles ‘TVC 15’ and ‘Stay’ (US only). Station to Station was first issued on CD in 1984 (by RCA) before a 1991 Rykodisc expanded CD offered a newly remastered version of the album with two bonus tracks (live versions of ‘Word on a Wing’ and ‘Stay’). The 2010 box set features a much criticised 5.1 mix by Harry Maslin (the original co-producer) on DVD.

Vinyl picture disc of Station to Station uses the original black and white cover photo

The 50th anniversary campaign offers a vinyl picture disc of Station to Station and a half-speed mastered black vinyl edition. The latter has been cut by John Webber at AIR Studios.

The picture disc and half-speed mastered vinyl of Station to Station will be released on 23 January 2026, via Parlophone.

Originally released back in 2016 as a 3CD, 2CD and 4LP sets (the latter now very sought after), a 2LP edition followed two years later.

The 3CD version featured 45 tracks, the two-CD and 4LP vinyl packages 33 tracks apiece and the 2LP version 19 tracks. The new release is coloured vinyl with one LP magenta coloured and the other a green vinyl pressing.

The Singles will be released on 30 January 2026 via Rhino.

Yes / Tales From Topographic Oceans box set

Yes’ 1973 album Tales from Topographic Oceans will be reissued as a massive 15-disc super deluxe edition box set, early next year.

The box set will feature 12 CDs, two vinyl LPs and a blu-ray audio. The album has been newly remastered by Bernie Grundman (CDs 1 & 2 and both vinyl LPs) and there’s also new stereo mixes of the album in both vocal and instrumental form from Steven Wilson (CDs 3-6 and the blu-ray).

Three CDs of rarities (discs 7-9) includes single edits, alternate versions and ‘In Progress’ recordings alongside some previously unreleased material. Finally, the last two discs feature live recordings from the ‘Tales’ tour, much of it unreleased.

“The album is such a complex piece of work, arguably one of the most uncompromising and polarising albums in the entire genre history of progressive rock, so I spent a long time working on the Atmos mix to arrive at something which I hope does the ambition and scale of the music justice

Steven Wilson

The blu-ray features a brand new Steven Wilson Dolby Atmos Mix of the album, as well as “slightly revised” 5.1 and Stereo mixes also by Steven (he’d originally done these back in 2016). The blu-ray also features the instrumental mixes, although none of the other bonus material (live, rarities, etc.)

This massive box set edition of Tales From Topographic Oceans will be released by Rhino on 6 February 2026.

The Power Station reissue

The Power Station’s self-titled debut album is being reissued for its 40th anniversary in 4CD and 2LP variants.

The band ( a supergroup of sorts) came about during Duran Duran’s hiatus (which also saw Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor form Arcadia) and featured Robert Palmer, Tony Thompson (from Chic) and Duran members John Taylor and Andy Taylor. Bernard Edwards produced the album (with “informal assistance” from Nile Rodgers) which features the hit singles ‘Some Like It Hot’ and ‘Get It On’.

The new 4CD reissue comes in a clamshell box and features a remastered version of the album, remixes, ‘raw instrumentals’ (taken from the original studio sessions) and unreleased live tracks (from The Spectrum in Philadelphia on 21 August 1985, newly remixed by Richard Whittaker) and Live Aid performances.

It should be pointed out that Robert Palmer would only perform with the band live once (‘Saturday Night Live’ in February 1985) and left the band shortly after album came out. They toured with Michael Des Barres who also performed with them for Live Aid – these are the recordings on the reissue. The box includes a 12 page booklet with a new interview with John Taylor and Andy Taylor (by John Earls).

A 2LP black vinyl edition features the remastered album, single remixes and Live Aid recordings. Both formats will be released on 23 January 2026.

Marillion / Script For A Jester’s Tear (vinyl picture disc)

Marillion‘s 1983 debut album, Script For A Jester’s Tear, is reissued as a vinyl picture disc. Audio is the 2020 stereo remix. 1989’s Season’s End is also available as a 2LP vinyl picture disc.

Sananda Maitreya / Juvenilia: The Columbia Years

As mentioned on last week’s Saturday Deluxe, Sananda Maitreya (the artist formerly known as Terence Trent D’Arby) is releasing a box set of the four albums he issued with Sony in the late ’80s and early-to-mid ’90s.

This has now been officially announced and SDE can confirm that it’s a 6LP coloured vinyl box set called Juvenilia: The Columbia Years with all four albums remastered and pressed on 180g coloured vinyl. The albums in question are Introducing The Hardline (1987), Neither Fish Nor Flesh (1989), Symphony Or Damn (1993, 2LP) and Vibrator (1995, 2LP).

Each boast ‘restored artwork’ and a “faithfully recreated sleeve” (not that faithful, since the name is different!) and each has “newly written liner notes and visual material from Sananda’s personal archive”. Neither Fish Nor Flesh originally had a very lavish 12-page booklet –  complete with overprinted transparent leaves – so it remains to be seen if that is properly recreated.

Incidentally, Symphony Or Damn was originally issued as a LP+7″ package, with the last four tracks on the album (including the semi-classic ‘Let Her Down Easy’) relegated to the seven-inch single! A rather odd thing to do, so it’s good to see this reissued as a proper 2LP set.

There are no bonus tracks and Juvenilia is also not available on CD. Make of that what you will. Sananda says: “These albums represent the journey of a young artist finding his voice: bold, vulnerable, and unafraid to challenge the form. It feels beautiful to finally present them together, in the spirit they were born”.

Juvenilia: The Columbia Years will be released on 13 March 2026 (was 6 February 2026). It is available to pre-order now from the official Sandanda shop with a signed print.
