The Style Council / Café Bleu special edition

Both 6CD and 3LP editions of this release have been recalled. It will now be released on 15 May 2026.

The Style Council’s 1984 album Café Bleu, is reissued as a 6CD special edition featuring unheard material, including early demos, alternate takes, and unreleased songs.

The band’s debut (the band being Paul Weller and Mick Talbot) showcased a new sound for Weller, a cosmopolitan blend of jazz, soul, and was released a year after their first single (‘Speak Like A Child’) and a few other non-album singles that were issued in the US (and a few other territories) as a mini-album Introducing The Style Council.

The new Café Bleu Special Edition in 6CD form includes the following content:

  • CD1 – Extended edition of Introducing… The Style Council.
  • CD2 – Café Bleu full album.
  • CD3 – All related singles, B-sides, remixes, and demos from that era.
  • CD4 – Unreleased Demos, Outtakes & Alternate Versions
  • CD5 & CD6 – BBC Sessions & Live Performances

The demos disc includes an early demo of ‘Long Hot Summer’ (from August 1982), ‘Boy Hairdresser’ (written for Respond artist Tracie Young) and extended version of ‘The Paris Match’ (running to 6:31) and early variant ‘“’Summertime Song’. There’s also some instrumentals from Mick Talbot including a jazzier version of ‘Party Chambers’ and ‘Mick’s Demo’.

Live recordings include performances from BBC Sight & Sound In Concert at Chippenham’s Gold Diggers and London’s Dominion Theatre.

The 6CD special edition includes a book with new sleeve notes from Gary Crowley. The 3LP vinyl edition offers the expanded Introducing… album on LP 1 (less tracks than on the CD version), the album proper on LP 2 and then a third LP that combines more tracks from the expanded Introducing… with some of the demos.

Café Bleu will be reissued on 15 May 2026 (was 30 January) via UMR / Polydor.

Bat For Lashes / Fur and Gold reissue

Longtime SDE readers might be aware that I’m a big Bat For Lashes supporter / fan and so I’m pleased to see that the band’s debut album (for ‘band’, read Natasha Khan & friends) is being reissued early next year for its 20th anniversary.

Fur and Gold was released in 2006 and was Mercury Music Prize nominated and features the singles ‘What’s A Girl To Do?’ (with its brilliant video), ‘Horse and I’ and ‘Trophy’.

The album has been newly remastered at Abbey Road Studios by Frank Arkwright, overseen by Natasha and the original producer David Kosten (yes, him).

The 2CD deluxe edition (a digipak) offers a bonus CD of demos, along with a BBC Live Lounge Version of ‘What’s A Girl To Do?’ and a ‘Rob da Bank Session’ version of Tahiti. The vinyl version is just the album.

Fur and Gold will be reissued on 6 February 2026, via BMG.

The Levellers / Zeitgeist 30th anniversary

The Levellers celebrate the 30th anniversary of their chart-topping album Zeitgeist. This 3CD set includes a disc of remixes and a CD with demos and outtakes. The 2LP blue vinyl features just the remixes on LP 2

Leisure Process / The Complete Epic Recordings

Leisure Process were a synth-pop duo formed in the early 1980s. Signed to Epic they released four singles before they went there separate ways. The band were Ross Middleton and Gary Barnacle (best known as a session saxophonist) and the singles were produced by Martin Rushent. This 2CD release features all the A and B-sides of the seven-inch and 12-inch singles, plus demos and sessions from the unheard vault tracks that would have likely ended up on the album that never was (it was going to be called Remarkable People with Interesting Lives). This sounds really interesting!

Frankie Goes To Hollywood / Welcome to the Pleasuredome playback event

The Frankie Goes To Hollywood Welcome to the Pleasuredome reissue was released yesterday (apart from the SDE exclusive blu-ray, which is unfortunately slightly delayed) and to mark this occasion a special Dolby Atmos playback event took place at L Acoustics in North London on Wednesday evening.

A selection of tracks were played (‘Welcome to the Pleasure Dome’, ‘Relax’, ‘Two Tribes’, ‘Born to Run’ and ‘The Power of Love’) and amongst the small audience was two members of the band: drummer Peter ‘Ped’ Gill and frontman Holly Johnson. Steven Wilson, who created the Atmos Mix, was also in attendance, and I was there were the rest of the team who put this box set together, including designer Philip Marshall.

The room was dressed with lots of rare and original Frankie memorabilia (mostly on a big table) from the collection of super-fan Mark Ward (R.I.P) and Holly and Ped spent some time looking through it.

Both men seemed to thoroughly enjoy the Atmos Mix and we were lucky enough to spend a few hours with them in the pub, afterwards! A memorable evening, for sure.

Ped (far right) and Holly check out the Frankie collectibles on display

The SDE exclusive blu-ray of Welcome to the Pleasuredome is expected to ship around the middle of this month. As well as the Dolby Atmos Mix, 5.1 Mix, New Stereo Mix and the original mix, it contains exclusive instrumental versions of the album and the bonus tracks (in Atmos, 5.1 and Stereo) and an exclusive 30-minute remix (called ‘Supernova’) of Welcome to the Pleasure Dome by Steven Wilson.

Because it was supposed to be released yesterday, we have put the blu-ray back on sale and you can order only via the SDE shop, using this link or the button below.

New Terence Trent D’Arby box set

Sananda Maitreya (the artist formerly known as Terence Trent D’Arby) is on tour in the UK at the moment and he recently revealed, in an interview with the UK’s Daily Telegraph, that he has made up with his former record label Sony and that the label will be releasing a box set of the four albums he recorded for them over 30 years ago: Introducing The Hardline (1987), Neither Fish Nor Flesh (1989), Symphony Or Damn (1993) and Vibrator (1995).

The box set will apparently be called Juvenilia and Maitreya has written sleeve notes for each album. According to the article, this is supposed to be coming out in December, although that seems a little unlikely, given that it’s now already November and this box set release hasn’t been officially announced yet. It could happen, but early next year feels more realistic.

No more details yet, in terms of remastering, bonus tracks etc.

The Who / Who Are You playback event

There were many great new releases this week, so there was lots going on! On Thursday, I headed to Dolby HQ in the West End of London to hear The Who’s 1978 album Who Are You in Dolby Atmos (the same night Pulp were marking the reissue of Different Class at Rio Cinema in Hackney).

As with Frankie, Who Are You is available as an SDE exclusive blu-ray (#48 in the SDE Surround Series) and also like Frankie the blu-ray contains exclusive content (an instrumental version of the album). Steven Wilson has created the immersive audio mix.

Left to right: Matt Kent, Richard Evans, Steven Wilson, Matt Everitt, Jon Astley (click image to enlarge)

No band members graced us with their presence this time, however broadcaster Matt Everitt hosted an interesting Q&A afterwards with people who have worked with the Who for many decades and offered some real insight into the making of the album and what was happening with the band during this period. These included Jon Astley, who produced the album with The Who once Glyn Johns stepped away from the project, designer Richard Evans who has worked with the band for almost 50 years (and has designed the new box set) and writer and Who expert Matt Kent. Insight into the Atmos Mixing process was offered by Steven Wilson.

Who Are You sounded amazing in the Dolby Theatre and it was a very interesting evening. The blu-ray was released yesterday, and the remaining stock is selling fast. If you don’t have a copy yet, now is the time (Elton John’s Captain Fantastic… which was issued a week earlier is now sold out). Order The Who exclusively via the SDE shop using this link or the button below.

Win a pair of tickets to a Split Enz Second Thoughts playback event

While on the subject of Dolby Atmos playback events, we have five pairs of tickets a Split Enz Second Thoughts Atmos playback event to give away!

The event is at Dolby HQ in Central London (Soho Square) at 6.30pm on 13 November 2025. I will be there and there’s an introduction from the album producer, and Roxy Music legend, Phil Manzanera.

If you can definitely make it along, then leave a comment which includes the words SPLIT ENZ PLAYBACK below. I’ll pick five winners at Noon on Friday 7 November and be in touch. Look forward to seeing you there!

The Alan Parsons Project / I Robot blu-ray audio

Folowing the release of the 7-disc super deluxe edition box set earlier this month, Cooking Vinyl have announced a standalone blu-ray audio edition of The Alan Parsons Project’s 1977 album I Robot.

The blu-ray has the same content as the one in the box set and contains Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround sound mixes by Alan Parsons, and a hi-res (96/24) stereo remaster by Miles Showell.

The I Robot album draws conceptually on author Isaac Asimov’s science fiction Robot stories, exploring philosophical themes regarding artificial intelligence.

Like other Alan Parsons Project albums, there were a variety of different lead vocalists employed including Steve Harley, Allan Clarke, Lenny Zakatek, Peter Straker, Jack Harris and Jaki Whitren. Plus, a selection of session musicians such as guitarist Ian Bairnson and drummer Stuart Tosh with arrangements by Andrew Powell.

The album was a worldwide hit selling in excess of two million copies, achieving platinum and gold status in numerous countries including the USA, Germany, Australia and Canada.

Audio streams on the blu-ray

  • Dolby Atmos Mix by Alan Parsons
  • 5.1 Mix of original album by Alan Parsons
  • Stereo HD Remaster by Miles Showell (96/24)

This blu-ray disc also contains the restored ‘I Wouldn’t Want To Be Like You’ promotional video and interview footage of Eric Woolfson discussing the album.

A 16-page booklet contains sleeve notes featuring quotes from Alan Parsons, the Woolfson family and the musicians, full lyrics and Alan Parsons’ thoughts on Dolby Atmos and 5.1 Surround Sound.

The I Robot blu-ray will be released on 12 December 2025. Pre-order your copy from the SDE shop using this link or the button below.

Oasis / (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? seven-inch box set

The Oasis reissue bandwagon continues its trundle down the Boulevard of Empty Wallets as the band announce – and this appears to be a new monthly pursuit – a new box set or reissue.

Last month it was the Familiar to Millions live album and this time around it’s a seven-inch box set of the singles from the band’s second album (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?, the 1995 long-player that was reissued on CD and vinyl only 27 days ago.

The singles are ‘Some Might Say’, ‘Roll With It’, ‘Wonderwall’ and ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’. Two UK number ones (‘Some Might Say’ and ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’) and two number twos (‘Roll With It’ and ‘Wonderwall’).

Audio is the latest remasters and this is presented in a cigarette style box, designed to replicate of the original 1996 CD singles box set. There are two versions: black vinyl and coloured vinyl, with the latter exclusive to the Oasis shop.

The seven-inch box set of (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? will be released on 12 December 2025.

Unfortunately, the Frankie Goes To Hollywood Welcome to the Pleasuredome SDE exclusive blu-ray audio has been subject to manufacturing delays and will now ship from mid-November 2025.

We are very sorry for this delay which will impact any SDE shop orders that contain the Frankie Goes To Hollywood blu-ray, including the Frankie + Propaganda bundle.

Orders for the Frankie 7CD+blu-ray box set and the 2LP vinyl (that do not include the blu-ray) are unaffected. Both of those formats (along with the 2CD version) are still released on 31 October.

Thanks for your patience and we look forward to getting this exclusive blu-ray out to you in a few weeks time.

Tom Petty competition winner announced

Congratulations to SDE reader Sean Hewitt who has been randomly selected as the winner of the Tom Petty competition posted on SDE last month.

Sean wins the ‘Because Sound Matters’ One-Step pressing of Petty’s 1994 album Wildflowers from Warner Records.

Limited to 6,000 numbered copies, this pressing has been cut directly from the original master tapes by engineer Chris Bellman, overseen by Petty’s longtime audio engineer Ryan Ulyate and cut for a true all-analog presentation with exceptional clarity and depth. Thanks to everyone who entered the competition and look out for another one coming soon!

The Damned / Not Like Everybody Else

The Damned will release a new studio album, Not Like Everybody Else, early next year. It’s a covers album, dedicated to the memory of Brian James, the band’s founding guitarist, who died in March this year.

Recorded in five days at Revolver Studio, Los Angeles, The Damned line-up for this album is: Dave Vanian on vocals, Captain Sensible on guitar, Rat Scabies on drums (back in the studio with the band for the first time in 40 years), Paul Gray on bass and keyboardist Monty Oxymoron.

Songs on the album include R. Dean Taylor’s 1974 hit ‘There’s A Ghost In My House’ (video premiering on Thursday) , Pink Floyd’s ‘See Emily Play’, The Animals’ ‘When I Was Young’ and poignantly ‘The Last Time’ by The Rolling Stones featuring Brian James which is taken from his final live performance with The Damned at Hammersmith, in 2022.

To celebrate the new record, The Damned will play a one-off covers show at Albert Hall, Manchester on 28 January 2026 performing songs from the new album, alongside fan-favourite covers that have marked their career. There’s also going to be a 50th anniversary show at Wembley on Saturday 11 April 2026,

Not Like Everybody Else will be released on 23 January 2026 via earMUSIC.

Mike Oldfield / Amarok (2LP vinyl)

To mark the 35th anniversary Mike Oldfield’s 1990 album it has been remastered at half-speed by Miles Showell. Depeche Mode – ‘M’ and ‘Memento Mori: Mexico City’

Depeche Mode are releasing a new documentary film M alongside a traditional concert film (and live album), Memento Mori:Mexico City, together in two special 2CD+2blu-ray and 2CD+2DVD packages.

M is by Mexican filmmaker Fernando Frías and is described as “a cinematic journey into the heart of Mexican culture’s relationship with death, framed by riveting live performances from Depeche Mode during their Memento Mori tour”. The film blends concert footage with “interpretive interstitials” and archive material. This film is also getting a limited theatrical release.

2CD+2Blu-ray edition of M/Memento Mori: Mexico City

Memento Mori: Mexico City is a full-length concert film of over two hours (also directed by Fernando Frías) featuring the Mexico City shows in 2023 where Depeche Mode played for more than 200,000 fans.

The four disc packages feature M on the first blu-ray (or DVD), the concert film on the second blu-ray (or DVD) and then a live album across two CDs which is the soundtrack to the Mexico City concert film.

A major ‘carrot’ with this live album is that it tacks on four previously unreleased studio recordings from the Memento Mori Sessions, at the end. These songs are called ‘Survive’, ‘Life 2.0’, ‘Give Yourself To me and In The End’.

If you don’t want any of the video formats, the live album (with those four new studio tracks) is available as a standalone 2CD or as a 4LP set, the latter available on various coloured editions.

M and Memento Mori: Mexico City will be released on 5 December 2025 via Sony.

Soft Cell’s Dave Ball dies

Dave Ball, one half of synth-pop duo Soft Cell, has died at the age of 66.

Soft Cell were massively influential and their 1981 debut album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret flung Dave and Marc Almond into the spotlight thanks to three top 5 singles in the UK including the number one ‘Tainted Love’ (which was also a top 10 hit in the US). After three albums the pair amicably ended Soft Cell in 1984 although, as we know, there were plenty of reunions and two further studio albums (2002’s Cruelty Without Beauty and 2022’s *Happiness Not Included).

In the late ’80s Ball formed a few short-lived bands, but it was electronic dance group The Grid (with Richard Norris) where he found real success outside Soft Cell, with ‘Swamp Thing’, from third album Evolver hitting No 3 in the UK charts. The Grid also did lots of remix work.

Only two months ago, Soft Cell played a headline show to 20,000 fans at the Rewind Festival in Henley-on-Thames and a new album was “literally completed only a few days ago” according to Marc Almond, who in paying tribute to Dave called him “a wonderfully brilliant musical genius” adding “Thank you Dave for being an immense part of my life and for the music you gave me. I wouldn’t be where I am without you.”

RIP Dave Ball. Leave your tributes in the comments section.

Stiff Little Fingers / Inflammable Material reissue

Inflammable Material, the debut album of Northern Irish band Stiff Little Fingers is being reissued in November across three physical formats.

Originally released in 1979 at the height of The Troubles in Northern Ireland, the album depicted volatile life in Belfast at the time and was met with critical acclaim.

The formats for reissue are a 4CD+DVD deluxe set, a 2LP vinyl edition and a 2CD version. All offer a new remaster, with the 4CD+DVD set adding previously unreleased demos, John Peel Sessions (some never broadcast), an unreleased 1979 concert from Troon and finally a DVD which includes the Rough Trade 1979 SLF promotional film along with concert footage from Friars in Aylesbury originally broadcast on BBC’s Old Gray Whistle Test in 1980 and a rare clip of ‘Alternative Ulster’ from the 1979 film Shellshock Rock.

The book-pack presentation features 9,000 words of notes from Stuart Bailie and includes fresh interviews with original band members and manager/lyricist Gordon Ogilvie.

The 2LP vinyl and 2CD editions include the remastered original album on the first disc and add the unreleased Troon live performance on the second.

Inflammable Materials will be reissued on 27 November 2025, via Parlophone.

Neil Young / Tonight’s The Night 50

50th anniversary edition. Available on 2LP and CD. Six bonus tracks, some unreleased.

Neil Young’s sixth studio album, Tonight’s The Night, is to be reissued for its 50th anniversary in late November.

Released in June 1975, but recorded almost two years earlier, in August 1973 at S.I.R. studios (Studio Instrumental Rentals), the album is a raw but compelling work, laid down in the aftermath of the death of both Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten (whose ‘Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown’ is the fifth track on the album) and Young’s friend and roadie Bruce Berry (whose brother Ken Berry ran S.I.R.). Berry died of a Heroin overdose in June ’73 and Whitten died in November ’72, as a result of ingesting a combination of diazepam and alcohol, while trying to get over his own heroin addiction. Whitten died within 24 hours of Young firing him for not being able to play (“I loved Danny. I felt responsible” Young said).

The 12-track album (which starts and ends with ‘Tonight’s The Night’) has a newly expanded tracklisting and will be reissued with enhanced cover art on CD and 2LP black vinyl.

In this new anniversary edition ‘Lookout Joe’, which until now has always been a version recorded earlier at Young’s Broken Arrow Ranch (on 15 Dec, 1972) is replaced by the same song recorded at the actual Tonight’s The Night sessions at S.I.R., nine months later.

There are also six bonus tracks, – all from the S.I.R. sessions – including ‘Walk On’ (re-recorded later that year for On The Beach) and take 3 of ‘Tonight’s The Night’. These are both previously unreleased. The other bonus tracks are ‘Everybody’s Alone’, ‘Raised on Robbery’ (featuring Joni Mitchell), and ‘Speakin’ Out Jam’ are also included (released on Archives Vol II) and ‘Wonderin’ (only previously available to stream on NYA).

This new 18-track expanded Tonight’s The Night 50 is released on 28 November 2025, via Warner Records.

New Order albums on blu-ray in Dolby Atmos

New Order’s albums MovementLow-Life and Brotherhood are to be reissued on blu-ray with Dolby Atmos Mixes by Steven Wilson. All three albums, along with Power, Corruption And Lies receive straight 2CD reissues at the same time.

The blu-rays feature new mixes by Steven Wilson in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 surround sound and 96/24 PCM stereo mixes, as well as instrumental stereo versions for each of the three albums. Remastered original stereo mixes are also included.

On Brotherhood, the multi-track master tapes of ‘As It Was When It Was’ and ‘Broken Promise’ have been lost, so those two songs have been up-mixed from the album’s 2024 remaster “to create as close an approximation of the Atmos and DTS-HD 5.1 surround experience as possible,” according to a statement.

The extras on CD2 for each of the four albums are taken from their previously released Definitive Edition box sets. These were released in 2019 for Movement; 2020 for Power, Corruption And Lies; 2023 for Low-Life and 2024 for Brotherhood. The stereo remasters on the new blu-ray editions date from the release of those box sets.

The audio extras on each CD2 are a solid array of demos, writing session recordings and rehearsals. Occasional 12-inch remixes feature, notably Michael Johnson’s for ‘Blue Monday 1988’ on Low-Life and Stephen Hague’s mix of ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ on BrotherhoodPower, Corruption And Lies features a John Peel session, while different versions of unreleased song ‘Skullcrusher’ are included on Low-Life and Brotherhood.

While audio extras are included, the visual components from the Definitive Edition box sets’ blu-ray discs haven’t been added to the new audio-only blu-rays which feature Steven Wilson’s mixes. These extras included two New York shows plus TV concerts at Hammersmith Riverside and Manchester Granada Studios for Movement; Tokyo Koseinenken Hall, Rotterdam Arena, Leuven Manhattan Club and Toronto International Centre gigs for Low-Life; and Brixton Academy and Manchester G-Mex concerts for Brotherhood, as well as assorted TV appearances around each album.

The Definitive Edition box sets were each 2CD+LP+2blu-ray releases. While the vinyl components are now missing, all four albums were reissued in September as standalone LPs.

New Order’s most recent album was Music Complete in 2015, with 2020’s standalone single ‘Be A Rebel’ based on a song from its sessions. They have continued to play live regularly since, but haven’t performed since finishing a US tour in May.

MovementLow-Life and Brotherhood are released on blu-ray on 5 December 2025. 2CD deluxe editions of Movement, Low-Life, Brotherhood and Power, Corruption And Lies are issued on the same day.

Haircut One Hundred / Boxing The Compass

Haircut One Hundred are to release Boxing The Compass, a brand new studio album.

Massively successful for a very short period of time in the early 1980s, the Nick Heyward-fronted band enjoyed four UK Top 10 hits: ‘Love Plus One’, ‘Fantastic Day’, ‘Favourite Shirts (Boys Meets Girl)’ and ‘Nobody’s Fool’ and a hit album, in 1982’s Pelican West.

Nick departed and the band issued one more album without him (1984’s Paint and Paint) and that was it. Until now…

Haircut One Hundred are back with their first new music in over 40 years

Haircut One Hundred are back, releasing their first new music in 40 years. The 10-track album won’t be out until next year (bah!) but it’s now up for pre-order on the band’s official shop with signed black vinyl and CD formats available. Pre-ordering also gives you early access to tickets for an as yet unannounced tour.

Boxing The Compass will be released on 19 June 2026 (was 29 May 2026 and before that was 20 March).
