Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers / Long After Dark deluxe edition

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ 1982 album, Long After Dark, will be reissued in October.

The band’s fifth studio album features the hits ‘You Got Lucky’ and ‘Change of Heart’ and reached the top 10 in the US Billboard charts, although Petty would later grumble about being dissatisfied with the final record and the track selection.

“There was some music recorded for Long After Dark that didn’t get on the record, that I thought would’ve made it a better album. I left off…four things that I liked quite a bit. And probably a few more written that never even got in the door.”

The new deluxe edition seeks to address that and features the songs that were lost in the debate over the album’s original direction. Highlights include Petty’s version of ‘Never Be You’ (a country hit for Rosanne Cash), ‘Don’t Make Me Walk the Line’ and an up-tempo version of ‘Ways To Be Wicked’ (previously covered by Lone Justice), recorded at Applewood Studios in Denver, Colorado. Some additional tracks are taken from French TV sessions, including ‘Turning Point’ and the Everly Brothers influenced ‘Keeping Me Alive’.

The 2CD set features a newly remastered version of the original album and Engineer Ryan Ulyate has newly mixed the bonus tracks. The 2CD also includes a blu-ray audio disc which features a Dolby Atmos Mix of the album and bonus tracks, plus hi-res stereo versions (Ulyate has also done the Atmos Mix).

As well as the 2CD+blu-ray there’s various 2LP editions and also single LP version. Sleeve notes come courtesy of David Fricke, with commentary from Jimmy Iovine and Cameron Crowe.

Long After Dark will be reissued on 18 October 2024 via Geffen/UMe.

The Cure / Novembre: Live in France 2022

The Cure will release a new 12-inch single in October called Novembre: Live in France 2022.

The vinyl record features two live tracks recorded during the French leg of The Cure’s ‘Shows of a Lost World’ tour in 2022 and is notable for being issued via Naked Record Club, which offer limited edition releases made from sustainable vinyl.

They use an injection-moulding machine that is estimated to use 80-90 percent less electricity than traditional steam vinyl pressing machines, with the records being made from non-toxic P.E.T. (Polyethylene Terephthalate – recyclable plastic). They also use a “paperless” printed label and sleeves made from FSC certified recyclable packaging.

The Cure and Naked Record Club will be donating 100 percent net profits from sales of this record to the climate charity Earth Percent founded by Brian Eno.

5,000 records are being pressed. 1-100 are available signed by Robert Smith and will be sold on The Cure’s online store. The rest are via Naked Record Club’s website.

Pre-order starts at 2pm on Friday 30 August. The record is released on 1 October 2024.

Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision

Sony will release Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision, a new deluxe box set that offers mostly previously unreleased tracks recorded by the new look Jimi Hendrix Experience (Billy Cox on bass, Mitch Mitchell on drums) at Manhattan’s Electric Lady Studios between June and August of 1970, shortly before the musician’s untimely death the following month.

These sessions saw Hendrix hard at work creating First Rays Of The New Rising Sun, an ambitious
double album that was planned to follow his 1968’s Electric Ladyland. The box sets offers a comprehensive look at the work Hendrix undertook during that summer of 1970. The music ranges from four-track demo recordings of ‘Valleys Of Neptune’ and ‘Heaven Has No Sorrow’, alternate arrangements of new songs such as ‘Come Down Hard On Me’ and ‘Belly Button’.

There will be two box sets: a 3CD+blu-ray version and a 5LP+blu-ray edition. Both offer 39 tracks of which 38 are previously unreleased. These include an unreleased version of ‘Angel’ [Take 7] which has been newly mixed. It includes the original performances recorded by Hendrix, Mitchell and Cox on July 23, 1970and pointedly does not include any of the drums and additional percussion elements Mitchell opted to add to this master take after Hendrix had died.

 
Both boxes come with a blu-ray that includes 20 newly created 5.1 surround sound mixes of the entire First Rays Of The New Rising Sun album plus three bonus tracks [‘Valleys Of Neptune’, ‘Pali Gap’
and ‘Lover Man’]. The Blu-ray also includes the full-length documentary Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision, which shows how Hendrix invested in what was originally a bankrupt Manhattan nightclub and started the process of turning it into a studio.

The packages also include a booklet with unpublished photos, Hendrix’s handwritten song drafts, and comprehensive sleeve notes.

Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision will be released on 4 October 2024, via Sony.

U2 / ZooTV Live in Dublin 1993 EP

The first official release of this much bootlegged performance. This is five tracks from U2’s open-air performances at the RDS Arena, Dublin in August 1993 on CD and yellow vinyl.


Rick Astley / Free (reissue)

Rick Astley stayed with RCA for this third album, but ditched the Stock Aitken Waterman songwriting/production team for 1991’s Free. This 2CD reissue via BMG features a 2024 remaster and 18 bonus tracks including B-sides, remixes and instrumentals. There’s a new vinyl version too which for the first time features the full 11-track version of the album (previously ‘Is This Really Love?’ was absent).

Various Artists / The Wiz soundtrack (2LP vinyl)

While Sidney Lumet’s 1978 film adaptation of 1974 musical The Wiz was a critical and commercial disaster, the Quincy Jones-helmed soundtrack fared a little better. It saw Jones work with Michael Jackson for the first time (MJ was The Scarecrow in the film) and produced a minor hit in ‘Ease on Down the Road’. Polydor are this week reissuing the album on vinyl.

Oasis reunite for 2025 UK tour

As expected, Liam and Noel Gallagher have buried the hatchet and are getting Oasis back together for live concerts in the UK next summer.

Multiple dates at Stadia in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin are scheduled for next year, three months ahead of the 30th anniversary of the band’s second album (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?, which is the fifth best-selling album of all time, in the UK.

Oasis / Definitely Maybe 30th anniversary reissue, reviewed

There is no confirmation of who else will return to the band and rumours of Oasis headlining next year’s Glastonbury festival (which will take place from 25th – 29th June) have not gone away. But we are told that there are plans for Oasis Live ’25 to visit other continents outside of Europe later next year.

The 14 shows that have been announced – see below – will go on sale at 9am on Saturday 31 August 2024. These will be available via Ticketmaster UK, Gigs and Tours and See Tickets. Dublin tickets with be available from 8am that same day from Ticketmaster in Ireland.

Neil Young / Official Release Series Vol 5 breakout releases

A year on from Neil Young’s Official Release Series Vol 5 box set, the four albums within will be available separately on CD and vinyl.

Back on Reprise after a largely unsuccessful partnership with Geffen, these albums marked something of a renaissance for Young. They are Freedom (1989), Ragged Glory (1990), live album Weld (1991) and the experimental Arc (1991).

Last year’s box was the first time these records had been remastered for vinyl and now you can pick and choose (and skip Arc, if you wish…).

Rockin’ in the Free World (from Freedom)

Ragged Glory is actually expanded with four extra tracks: ‘Interstate’ and ‘Don’t Spook The Horse’ (both B-sides to singles) and ‘Box Car’ and a 12-minute ‘Born To Run’ (both previously unreleased versions prior to the ORS 5 box) which is why it now runs to 2CDs or 3LPs (same as Weld). Freedom is one CD and a double vinyl set and finally Arc is both a single disc on CD and vinyl (being only 35 minutes long).

All four albums are released on 4 October 2024, via Reprise. Both Official Release Series Vol 5 box sets are still easily available and in fact the 6CD box is so cheap (under £20 in the UK right now) there’s little point buying these individual CDs and even the 9LP vinyl box is under £100 in the UK (scroll down for the various widgets).

Def Leppard / One Night Only: Live at The Leadmill, Sheffield

Following a limited coloured vinyl release for this year’s Record Store Day, Def Leppard’s 2023 gig at historic Sheffield venue The Leadmill will be issued across a number for formats in October, as One Night Only: Live at The Leadmill Sheffield.

The 900-capacity venue hosted one of the most intimate shows the band has played in the UK or Europe since the height of their commercial success in the 1980s. The concert was on 19 May 2023 on the eve of the band’s UK/European tour which included a night at Wembley Stadium! This was also the day the band issued their Drastic Symphonies album and was a year after the success of the band’s 12th studio albums Diamond Star Halos (available on SDE-exclusive blu-ray).

This One Night Only release is available on CD, 2LP vinyl and as CD+blu-ray and CD+DVD combo packs and will be issued on 11 October 2024, via Mercury Studios.

Pet Shop Boys announce new single, ‘Feel’

Pet Shop Boys will release a fourth single from their Nonetheless album in September.

They’ve gone with the song ‘Feel’ as, presumably, the final single and like the others it will be available on CD. The five tracks on this CD single include a radio edit of ‘Feel’ and a previously unreleased song, ‘Everybody will dance’, which was written and demoed in 2015 during song-writing sessions prior to the recording of the Super album.

Additionally, the CD features a Floorplan remix of the first Nonetheless single, ‘Loneliness’, a Superchumbo remix of ‘Everybody will dance’ and the ‘Deutsch demo’ of album track ‘The Schlager hit parade’ called ‘Schlager-Hitparade’ which is sung in German (by Chris!).

The CD single is packaged in a gatefold card wallet and features photography shot on the Feel video (which has been directed by Corbin Shaw).

Feel is released on 27 September 2024, via Parlophone. The blu-ray of Nonetheless with exclusive SDE slipcase and a special blu-ray bundle with the ‘Dancing Star’ CD single are available via the SDE shop.

Joan As Police Woman / Lemons, Limes and Orchids

Joan As Police Woman (aka Joan Wasser) issues a new studio album, Lemons, Limes and Orchids, next month.

The album follows 2021’s collaborative The Solution is Restless, 2020’s Cover Two and Damned Devotion from 2018 (read SDE’s interview with Joan here).

Joan says the following about Lemons, Limes, and Orchids: “I was ready to make an album that truly featured my voice. The basics were recorded like they used to be – with me singing live along with the band. My good friend told me this is the sexiest album I’ve ever made. Honestly, I think she’s right.

‘Long For Ruin’ from Lemons, Limes and Orchids

The record is described as “a nocturne about love and loss and a reckoning with our collective disorientation, part hymn to holding on and part benediction of letting go”. It can be pre-ordered on CD or tangerine-coloured vinyl.

Lemons, Limes and Orchids will be released on 20 September, via PIAS.

Nena’s debut album expanded for reissue

German band Nena’s self-titled debut album is to be reissued as expanded 2CD and 2LP deluxe editions in November.

Originally released in January 1983, Nena features the original ’99 Luftballons’ hit single and topped the charts in Germany and Austria but the album wasn’t released internationally. Over a year later, when the English language version of ’99 Luftballons’ (’99 Red Balloons’) was a massive hit in the UK and an album called 99 Luftballons was released further afield, which consisted of songs from the band’s first and second albums (the second album ? had been issued by this point) in a mix of German and English language versions.

BMG in Germany are very much sticking to the original Nena album for this reissue, so for example, it doesn’t even feature ’99 Red Balloons’ as a bonus track, which for the audience beyond Germany and Austria is going to seem slightly odd. The 10 extra songs on the second CD include B-sides, live tracks and ‘Amour Candide’, a French language version of the song ‘Nur Geträumt’.

The label make the point that everything has been “lovingly remastered” from the original tapes “to ensure excellent sound quality” and while labels often say this, the specific emphasis hopefully means this should sound good.

The 2CD set includes a 24-page booklet with a personal note from Nena to late band member Carlo Karges. There’s also a snazzy looking 2LP set pressed on red vinyl which features the same 10 bonus tracks on the second LP.

Nena is released on 1 November 2024 via BMG in Germany.

Thomas Dolby / The Flat Earth coloured vinyl LP

Thomas Dolby’s 1984 album, The Flat Earth, will be reissued next month as a limited edition coloured vinyl pressing.

Now 40 years old, Dolby’s second album peaked at No 14 on the UK album chart and was a top 40 hit in the US. It features the single. ‘Hyperactive!’, ‘The Flat Earth’ and ‘Dissidents’.

The Flat Earth is pressed on 180g translucent blue vinyl for this reissue and is limited to just 750 numbered copies.

Green Day / American Idiot reissue

Green Day’s 2004 album American Idiot will be reissued for its 20th anniversary in October.

The band’s seventh record was a critical and commercial success – a concept album which features the singles ‘American Idiot’, ‘Jesus of Suburbia’, ‘Holiday’, ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’, and ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’.

Two box sets share the same audio and video content, with a 4CD + 2 x blu-ray set and an 8LP vinyl + 2 x blu-ray super deluxe both offering 15 unreleased demos, a 15-song 2004 concert from Irving Plaza, NYC (9 songs previously unreleased), and 14 B-sides and bonus tracks.

The boxes are completed with two blu-rays that feature the film Heart Like A Hand Grenade, 35 minutes of Green Day live at the BBC, and a new, unreleased documentary: 20 Years of American Idiot

 The CD box comes with a 48-page book, an enamel pin set, sticker sheet, and cloth patch, whereas the vinyl box includes a 36-page book, large Green Day flag and an American Idiot red tie. David Fricke contributes sleeve notes.

A red splatter 2LP vinyl is also available via some indie retailers, such as Rough Trade (UK link, US link).

American Idiot is reissued on 25 October 2024, via Warner Records.

John Lennon / Mind Games meditation mixes

In case the £1350 super deluxe edition of John Lennon’s Mind Games wasn’t enough for you (or even the £130 deluxe for that matter), some new mixes of just the title track of John’s 1973 album are being released on a limited edition 3LP vinyl package.

Called the ‘Meditation Mixes’, these nine mixes see the song “radically altered, slowed down and extended” with running times ranging from 5 to over 23 minutes. We are told this allows “the musical soundtrack to wash over the listener and provide a relaxing, immersive, deep listening and meditative experience”.

Here’s some more blurb from the official announcement: “Four of these tracks are presented as ‘Binaural’ versions that each focus on different types of brain waves: Beta, Delta, Gamma and Theta. Named ‘Mind’, ‘Space’, ‘Spirit’ and ‘Love’, these tracks utilise the effect created when the ears hear left and right frequencies which combine to be perceived as a new frequency that can activate different brain patterns for scientifically proven therapeutic effects”.

These mixes have been produced by Sean Ono Lennon and mixed and engineered by Sam Gannon with additional recording engineered by Scott Holingsworth. None of them are available in either version of the box set and there’s no CD version either, just the 3LP vinyl which is pressed on 180g crystal clear vinyl which is packaged in a triple gatefold mirrorboard sleeve.

These Meditation Mixes of Mind Games will be released on 11 October 2024, two days after what would have been John Lennon’s 84th birthday.

Therapy? / Troublegum 30th anniversary reissue

Therapy?’s 1994 album Troublegum will be reissued as two different vinyl editions for its 30th anniversary.

The Northern Irish band’s second album on A&M (and their fourth overall), Troublegum was recorded at Chipping Norton Studios and RAK in London and ultimately delivered five top 30 hits, including lead single ‘Screamager’ which reached number 9 in the UK charts. In the middle of all this was the non-album single ‘Opal Mantra’, which peaked at number 18.

Lavender and grey 2LP vinyl set offers bonus tracks

The 30th anniversary reissue is a vinyl-only affair (a 3CD deluxe was issued 10 years ago for the 20th anniversary) and the two editions are as follow: a 2LP set on lavender and grey vinyl, with the bonus LP offering 14 B-sides/rarities; and a single LP pressed on ‘caramel’ coloured vinyl.

Troublegum will be reissued on 27 September 2024 via Proper Records.

David Sylvian / Everything and Nothing

David Sylvian’s compilation Everything and Nothing is being released on vinyl for the first time, in October.

Released in 2000, it’s a career-spanning compilation that features key songs from David’s solo recordings, collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Robert Fripp, Mick Karn, Alesini & Andreoni, and tracks by Japan and Rain Tree Crow.

It’s a mix of previously released, unreleased, re-recorded, non-album and alternate versions of tracks from Sylvian’s 20 years with Virgin Records, focusing entirely on vocal compositions.

Everything and Nothing was originally issued on CD, minidisc and cassette but not vinyl. To accommodate the 29 tracks, this new issue is a triple vinyl package.

Everything and Nothing will be released as a 3LP set on 4 October 2024, via UMR.
