At £1350, the super deluxe edition of John Lennon’s 1973 album Mind Games is one of the most expensive music box sets issued since SDE was founded back in 2011.

Sony Music in Japan are celebrating the 40th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen’s 1984 album Born in the USA as a special 4CD deluxe edition unavailable anywhere else!
The 4CD set features the original album on CD 1 (the 2014 remastering) and the a full live show at the Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey on 22 August 1985, on the three bonus CDs.
The classic Live 1975–85 album featured a couple of Born in the USA songs from 19 and 21 August 1985 Giants Stadium shows but none from 22 August, and while this whole show has technically been available as a download and on CD-R via the ‘Live Bruce Springsteen’ Official Live Archive Series, this is the first time it’s been released ‘properly’ on CD anywhere in the world.
The four CDs are actually ‘Blu-spec CD2’ discs but rest assured these are fully compatible with standard CD players. This release is presented as a deluxe seven-inch Features cardboard with a photo book and a booklet (see image above).
his Japan-only Born in the USA 40th anniversary 4CD set will be released on 25 September 2024 via Sony Music Japan.
TheSmashing Pumpkins’2001 Greatest Hits aka ‘Rotten Apples’ was only ever officially issued on CD and cassette but now gets a vinyl release for the first time.
This of course features many of the band’s hit singles, including ‘Today’, ‘Bullet with Butterfly Wings’, ‘1979’, ‘Tonight, Tonight’ and others.
As 2CD set, this was a 34-track compilation, but the forthcoming 2LP edition features 18 tracks which is similar, but not identical to, the single CD offering at the time. The vinyl includes ‘Landslide’ (not on the single CD) and but omits ‘Try Try Try’ (which was).
This 2LP set of Greatest Hits will be released on 16 August 2024 (was 9 August), via UME.
Graham Gouldman of 10cc and Wax fame releases a new solo album called I Have Notes, which features contributions from no less than Brian May, Hank Marvin, Albert Lee and Ringo Starr. And SDE interview with Graham is imminent, in the meantime, check out ‘We’re Alive’, below.
Dutch progressive rockers Focus return with their 12th studio album, recorded in Wisseloord Studio in the Netherlands (where Frankie Goes To Hollywood recorded Liverpool, fact-fans). The group still features founding member Thijs van Leer and drummer Pierre van der Linden, who first joined the band back in 1971.

Now That’s What I Call Music are continuing to put out the original UK NOW releases on CD and next month will reissue 1990’s NOW 18 as a 2CD set.
Volume 18 suffers from the same unfortunate cover art that dogged 17. The era of wonderfully creative art direction that really lifted these compilations, by this point, was well and truly over. Terrible typography with a horrible drop-shadow, this two-colour monstrosity is enough to put you off buying it.
Naturally, there are some good songs on here, including Pet Shop Boys’ ‘So Hard’, The Beautiful South’s, ‘A Little Time’, Roxette’s ‘It Must Have Been Love’, Talk Talk’s ‘It’s My Life’, The Las’ ‘There She Goes’, the remixed versions of Sting’s ‘Englishman in New York’ and Suzanne Vega’s Tom’s Diner, plus Kylie’s ‘Step Back in Time’, to name a few… but as usual we are now missing some tracks, ‘thanks’ to licensing restrictions.

Ultravox’s 1984 studio album Lament is being reissued for its 40th anniversary in September and amongst the formats is an SDE-exclusive blu-ray audio with a Steven Wilson Dolby Atmos Mix (and other content) and will be available exclusively from SDE, via theSDEshop.com.
Lament was the band’s seventh album and the fourth with Midge Ure on vocals. After the George Martin polish of Quartet, the band produced Lament themselves reclaiming their new wave sound, with songs like ‘Heart of the Country’ and the title track. The album includes the UK top 10 hit ‘Dancing With Tears In My Eyes’ and Lament and One Small Day were both top 30 singles in Britain.

Reconstruction]
Last year, when Soft Cell reissued their classic 1981 album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, there were a number of editions, including a 6CD super deluxe edition, an SDE exclusive blu-ray and various vinyl versions. A 2CD softpack/digisleeve version appeared briefly but was withdrawn (rarity, ahoy!), but now a higher quality presentation (hardcover casebound book edition) is due to be officially released, tomorrow.
The band are not pointing fingers, but are calling this edition “the only one approved by Soft Cell” and make clear that the deluxe packaging is “identical to 2021’s *Happiness not included and 2020’s Cruelty Without Beauty reissues”. They also stress that all the upcoming re-issues will also be released in this format to make “a complete set”, which they hint “we might even put in a box one day”.
Not confirmed by SDE, but there’s a suggestion that a few tracks on the 2CD set aren’t quite the same as the equivalent tracks in the box set (thanks to SDE reader ‘bertielego’ for pointing this out).

Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret - 2CD casebound book deluxe
a-ha’s 2016 compilation Time and Again: The Ultimate a-ha, is being made available on vinyl for the first time.
What was a 19-track collection is now expanded to 21 tracks and making this the only a-ha compilation to include songs from all 11 original studio albums.
The bonus tracks are ‘This Is Our Home’ from 2017’s MTV Unplugged: Summer Solstice and ‘I’m In’ from 2022’s True North. The album was originally issued as a 2CD set (with bonus remixes on disc two) and has subsequently been made available on streaming platforms.
Time and Again: The Ultimate a-ha is released as a 2LP vinyl package on 9 August 2024, via Rhino.
Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, Alanis Morissette’s second international album (fourth overall), is being reissued on vinyl in September.
The album features the hit ‘Thank U’ and was originally released in 1998, three years after Jagged Little Pill’s enormous success.
Although Alanis announced this reissue by saying she is “honoring this chapter with five new bonus tracks, including an amazing remix of ‘Uninvited’ by Freemasons”, those tracks will not appear on any physical product because a) the vinyl features the same tracks as the original and b) there is no CD reissue (‘Uninvited’ was a non-album single featured on the soundtrack to the Brad Silberling film City of Angels and issued early in 1998). However, remix aside, they’ve all been out before somewhere or other because the streaming-only, bonus tracks are:

‘Pollyanna Flower’ was on on the ‘Thank U’ CD single, along with the demo of ‘Uninvited’. ‘These are the Thoughts’ was on the ‘Joining U’ CD single and ‘Death of Cinderella’ was a bonus demo on the 2015 Jagged Little Pill reissue.
The new vinyl version does feature new, ‘reimagined’ artwork and is available as a 2LP black vinyl or 2LP clear vinyl package. It’s not cheap, mind, hovering below or above the £50 mark in the UK, depending on which product you go for and where you buy it. In America the black vinyl is under £30 (rip off Britain, ahoy!).
What’s being called the ‘Thank U Edition’ of Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie will be reissued on vinyl on 6 September 2024, via Rhino.

Yes’ 1972 album Fragile is being reissued as a 4CD+blu-ray+LP set which features a Steven Wilson Dolby Atmos Mix, newly remastered version of the original album, new 2024 stereo mixes, instrumental mixes, rarities, live recordings and more.
This Bob Stanley curated compilation offers audio that “anticipated new age and ambient music” including advertising jingles and TV themes, space exploration and beat-less ambience.
Prince’s classic Purple Rain album, from 1984, has been mixed in Dolby Atmos and is available to stream from today, on compatible streaming platforms.
The new Atmos mix of Purple Rain has been created from the original multi-track master tapes by Chris James (who did Diamonds and Pearls last year).
Here’s a quote from Paisley Park Enterprises: “As we begin what will be a year-long celebration of the 40th anniversary of Purple Rain, we are thrilled to present Prince’s masterpiece in ATMOS, providing an immersive, surround auditory experience of Prince’s legendary album. Sheena Easton’s 1985 album Do You is being reissued as a 2CD deluxe edition in August with rare and unreleased bonus material.
Produced by Nile Rogers, Do You exhibited more of a dance-R&B vibe and was generally well received, even if commercially it was a dip in form (peaking at #40 in the US). A few years ago Easton told Classic Pop magazine that “Looking back, it was a huge mistake. I think as artists we just didn’t gel and it’s the album I’m most disappointed by”.
Nevertheless, there’s plenty for fans to enjoy on this expanded 2CD deluxe, first and foremost “The Uncut Nile Rodgers Sessions” which is a previously unreleased version of the entire album with unheard full length versions of songs like ‘Jimmy Mack’, ‘Magic Of Love’ and ‘Don’t Turn Your Back’ (which runs for more than seven minutes).
There are also seven-inch edits, 12-inch mixes and a selection of ‘TV Mixes’ bringing the total bonus track count to 21.
Audio has been remastered from the original master tapes and this comes with a 24-page booklet with new interviews by Adam Mattera with songwriters Junior Giscombe, Adele Bertei and Charlie Midnight.

Alison Moyet will release a new album called Key in October which features 16 re-recorded songs and two new tracks.
After 2017’s Other, Moyet took time away from the music industry to study Fine Art Printmaking at Brighton University and in 2023 graduated with a first-class degree BA (Hons). But she’s now back with this new record to celebrate her 40th year as a solo artist and has announced a world tour for next year.
The new album has been created with her longtime producer, arranger and musical director Sean McGhee, with the ‘reimagined’ tracks made up from “singles, fan favourites and deep cuts”. Alison says, “I wanted to take the opportunity to look at the trajectory of the past four decades and explore songs that, in their original form, were never fully realised or have had their relevance to me altered by time”. You can hear an example of one of the new versions by listening to ‘All Cried Out (Key Version)’, below.
Other reworked tracks include ‘Love Resurrection’, ‘Where Hides Sleep’ (both from ‘Alf’), ‘Is This Love’, ‘Can’t Say It Like I Mean It’ and ‘This House’. One of the new tracks is called ‘Such Small Ale’.
Alison has created the artwork for the new album and Cooking Vinyl are going very BIG with this release with an enormous array of coloured vinyl and special editions. Amazon in the UK have ‘alternative artwork’ versions of the CD edition and 2LP orange vinyl, both signed, for example. Additionally Rough Trade in the UK are offering the indies black and white splatter 2LP coloured vinyl edition, in addition to a 2LP white vinyl version (which appears to be the standard version), while HMV have a yellow and back smoke vinyl 2LP set and The Sound of Vinyl have an exclusive black and white marbled vinyl. The official Alison Moyet shop adds a turquoise marble 2LP vinyl to the list and has bundles with signed prints. That’s six different coloured vinyl already with possibly more to come!

Seal’s second album was reissued last week and the blu-ray audio – only available as part of the 2CD+blu-ray deluxe edition – has delivered some unexpected content.
Rhino/Warner Records told everyone that this included just a Dolby Atmos Mix and a hi-res 96/24 stereo mix, so retailers who offered this format – including the SDE shop – naturally repeated those details. But now the product has been released, it turns out that there is a third audio stream on the blu-ray: a 5.1 Surround Sound Mix!
No mention of the 5.1 mix on the disc (or packaging)
This is not mentioned at all on the packaging or the disc, it’s only once you put the blu-ray disc in your player and see the menu screen that you’ll notice that ‘DTS 5.1‘ is an option. This is actually a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix at 96 /24. It appears to be the 5.1 mix included with the US-only CD+DVD edition from 2005 and not rendered from the new Atmos Mix.
This is great news for Seal fans, since the long out-of-print CD+DVD edition is very hard to get hold of and – until now – was the only way to acquire the 5.1 mix.

Whether this was planned ‘Easter Egg’ type content, a last minute addition or just a cock-up, we’ll leave for you to decide. It’s not all positive news, because the hi-res stereo mix (labelled bizarrely as ‘DTS Stereo’) is not 96/24 as promised, but is actually 48/24.

David Gilmour’s forthcoming album Luck and Strange was announced in April with formats on offer including a blu-ray audio, CD and various vinyl editions. Almost two months on, Gilmour has confirmed two box set versions.
There’s a vinyl box and a CD box with both including a 68-page hardback book by Thames & Hudson of exclusive photographs taken by Polly Samson during the recording of the album.

The vinyl box set contains two LPs on 180g vinyl and the blu-ray, while the CD box contains two CDs and the blu-ray. The extra CD and LP come in dedicated sleeves and have the same five bonus tracks:

Only one of those bonus tracks – ‘A Single Spark (Demo)’ – is actually exclusive. In fact, the two bonus tracks from the standard CD are omitted from the album on CD 1 in the box and moved to CD 2. The blu-ray audio in both boxes is identical to standalone offering (containing four of the five bonus tracks in Atmos and stereo) although the packshots suggest the packaging is actually inferior (CD-sized card sleeve).
Both Luck and Strange box sets are released on the same date as the other formats, 6 September 2024, via Sony Music. Standalone blu-ray, coloured vinyl and bundles still available via the SDE shop.
The Alan Parsons Project’s third album, 1978’s Pyramid, is being reissued in a number of formats including a massive seven-disc super deluxe edition box set.
Pyramid was a concept album centred on the pyramids of Giza. It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios with a variety of different lead vocalists employed including John Miles, Colin Blunstone, Lenny Zakatek, David Paton, Jack Harris and Dean Ford. Musicians included guitarist Ian Bairnson and drummer Stuart Elliott with arrangements by Andrew Powell (all three contributed to Kate Bush’s debut The Kick Inside, released only three months before Pyramid).
The album reached the top 30 in many territories (although not the UK) but couldn’t repeat the top 10 success in America of the previous album, 1977’s I Robot.
The limited edition super deluxe edition contains is a 4CD+blu-ray+2LP set which comes with a 60-page hardcover book. Across the four CDs are a new 2024 remaster of the album (by Miles Showell) and 67 bonus tracks, with 54 of them previously unreleased, including studio session out-takes and Eric Woolfson’s demos or ‘Songwriting Diaries’ as they are referred to.

The blu-ray features the first ever Dolby Atmos Mix of an Alan Parsons Project album along with a 5.1 mix created from the original multi-track master tapes by Alan Parsons, plus a new stereo HD remaster of the original album by Miles Showell. The 2LP 45PRM set included also offers the remaster cut at half-speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road.
The 12″ x 12″ book offers interviews with Alan Parsons, the Woolfson family and the musicians/lead vocalists as well as full lyrics and commentary on the bonus tracks. The final element of content is a replica original press folder containing an A1 sized poster and postcard of the album artwork plus a reproduction of the original biography, press photo and a hand typed ‘Prologue’ and ‘Preamble’ about the Pyramid album by Eric Woolfson.
There are other formats, including a clear vinyl half-speed mastered pressing which is 33PRM and therefore is a single LP, and an Alan Parsons Project shop exclusive half-speed pressed on ‘gold nugget’ vinyl. A single ‘expanded’ CD edition offers four bonus tracks, which is a bit stingy given CD 1 in the box has seven bonus tracks).

Jethro Tull/Bursting Out: The Inflated EditionCD, DVD
Jethro Tull’s first live album, 1978’s Bursting Out (actually issued as Jethro Tull Live: Bursting Out) will be reissued in June as a 3CD+3xDVD deluxe set with the appropriate suffix ‘The Inflated Edition’.
Grateful Dead / From the Mars Hotel (50th anniversary)
This Grateful Dead‘s 1974 studio album is expanded for its 50th anniversary to include the Dead’s nearly complete, previously unreleased show from 12 May 1974, at the University of Nevada in Reno. ‘Zoetrope’ vinyl LP also available (album only).
After her success in Shakespears Sister, Marcella Detroit (formerly Marcy Levy) issued, in 1994, what was her second solo album, Jewel. Produced by Chris Thomas and with contributions from the likes of Elton John and Phil Manzanera, the album delivered three top 40 UK singles including the #11 hit ‘I Believe’. The new 2CD set offers a generous helping of bonus tracks on the second disc and this album is also reissued on ‘sapphire blue’ coloured vinyl LP.
Paul McCartney will bring his grammatically challenged ‘Got Back’ tour to the UK in December.
Four dates (two in Manchester and two in London) will see McCartney play in Britain for the first time since his well received 2022 Glastonbury show. He last played London back in 2018 and hasn’t performed in Manchester since 2011.
Last week Paul announced that he’ll be taking his tour to Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru this October and before he hits the UK, Macca will play two shows in France and Spain, in early December.
