NOW Yearbook: The Vault 1985

NOW That’s What I Call Music continue with their Yearbook Vault releases of ‘lesser compiled’ tracks with a look at 1985.

4CD and 3LP coloured vinyl collections dig deep into the year’s musical landscape – with 78 tracks on the CD editions and 45 songs across three coloured (green) vinyl LPs.

The 4CD set – which comes in the usual deluxe hardcover book and card sleeve editions opens with Bruce Springsteen’s ‘My Hometown’ – the last single from the mega-selling Born in the USA before moving on to Bryan Ferry and Sting with ‘Windswept’ and ‘Love is the Seventh Wave’. Both of those songs are classic Vault tracks: great tracks off classic albums (Boys and Girls and The Dream of the Blue Turtles, respectively) that peaked WAY short of where many assume they did (neither cracked the UK top 40). Go West’s ‘Eye to Eye’ was only a single in the US, while ABC’s ‘Be Near Me’ was released both sides of the Atlantic, but fared much better Stateside. This disc continues with offerings from Fine Young Cannibals, China Crisis, Simply Red, Thompson Twins and the Art of Noise.

Deluxe hardcover book 4CD set

The second disc has an ‘alternative’ flavour, at least initially, with songs from Cocteau Twins, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Dream Academy and New Model Army before widening it’s net and scoping up minor hits from the likes of Tina Turner, Matt Bianco, Chris Rea and Squeeze.

CD3 has a dance floor slant with tracks including Cameo’s brilliant ‘She’s Strange’, Sheryl Lee Ralph’s ‘In The Evening’, the Stock Aitken Waterman produced ‘The Heaven I Need’ by The Three Degrees and Divine’s cover of ‘Twisting The Night Away’. Elton John & Millie Jackson’s ‘Act of War’ is a very popular 12-inch at Den Bosch record fair (I’m always seeing it) but it was a minor hit a few years before ‘Nikita’ revived Reg’s commercial fortunes here in the UK.

CD 4 has the kind of artists you’d find on a compilation called ‘American Highway Dreams’ (Pat Benetar, Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp, Kim Carnes, Dio, The Cars, Rick Springfield etc.), but since this is a Vault compilation it’s not all the usual big hits which at least means it’s not predictable

NOW Yearbook Vault ’85 will be released on 15 May 2026.

Madonna / Confessions II

Madonna’s new studio album will be Confessions ll a follow-up to Confessions on a Dance Floor, which was released in late 2005.

Like its predecessor, this record is produced by Stuart Price and Madonna says “When Stuart Price and I first started working on this record, this was our manifesto”:

We must dance, celebrate, and pray with our bodies. These are things that we’ve been doing for thousands of years — they really are spiritual practices. After all, the dance floor is a ritualistic space. It’s a place where you connect

—with your wounds, with your fragility. To rave is an art. It’s about pushing your limits and connecting to a community of like-minded people.

Sound, light, and vibration Reshape our perceptions Pulling us into a trance-like state. The repetition of the bass, we don’t just hear it but we feel it. Altering our consciousness and dissolving ego and time.

Quite. There’s a teaser trailer, which you can checkout below.

In terms of formats, the album will be available on single CD and single red vinyl editions which feature 12 tracks and are “non-stop mix” editions (which presumably means the tracks all segue). The CDs here are in a jewel case and the vinyl comes with a double-sided poster.

Then there are 16 track 2LP on pink vinyl and ‘softpack’ CDs which both feature 4 bonus tracks. It appears that these versions offer “12 individual songs” rather than the “non-stop mix” on the single discs. Certainly that’s how the spec reads to SDE at this point in time. The double vinyl includes a double-sided poster and an “exclusive numbered coat check” (which we think is a card ticket).

2LP pink vinyl features 16 tracks and comes with a poster and an exclusive ‘numbered coat check’

There is also a 16-track deluxe CD pocketed in a “unique 7 x 10.25 inch soft cover photo-book featuring exclusive images from the album’s photoshoot”. Additionally, a 16-track translucent pink cassette tape is being made available.

Most of the formats have different/alternate covers, making you wonder which, if any, is the ‘proper’ cover of the album. The main image on the post shows the cover of the 2LP and deluxe CD editions. Inevitably, there will be a plethora of coloured vinyl exclusives, most likely based on the single vinyl LP variant with the 12-track version of the album.

No tracklisting has yet been released and Confessions II will be released on 3 July via Warner Records. The pre-order links in the widgets below a very slow in coming through, but will update automatically.

Duran Duran to release new single, Free to Love

Duran Duran will release a new single later this month, called Free to Love.

The song features their old mucker Nile Rodgers and will be released on 23 April on the eve of the band’s US/European/UK spring-summer tour which includes a 5 July headline at BST Hyde Park with the Scissor Sisters in support.

‘Free to Love’ appears to be a standalone single (most likely recorded a few years ago during the Danse Macabre sessions) and there’s no word of any physical release (Duran haven’t issued a CD single since 2007’s ‘Falling Down’).

SDE at the Record Fair in Den Bosch

I’m in the Netherlands this weekend – the city of Den Bosch to be precise – to attend the 62nd “Mega Record & CD Fair“. There won’t be updates here, but if you follow SDE on instagram I’ll be posting there showing off some of what’s available and at what prices and hopefully giving you a flavour of the event. If you are there and you see me, come and say hello!

I first attended back in 2024 and there’s an account of that trip can be found here.

Pink Floyd / 8-Tracks

Pink Floyd will release a new ‘best of’ compilation in June, called 8-Tracks.

As the title suggests, this collection features eight songs, all selected from the band’s 1971 – 1979 era. These include ‘Money’, ‘Wish You Were Here’, ‘Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2’, ‘Time’ and ‘Comfortably Numb’, alongside earlier cuts in ‘One Of These Days’ and ‘Wot’s… Uh The Deal’. There is one rarity: the full version of ‘Pigs On The Wing’, with the Snowy White guitar solo, previously only available on the 8-track cartridge version of Animals, released in 1977.

Also, the track sequence has been edited by Steven Wilson using sound effects sourced from the original multitracks to make for a continuous listening experience in “classic Floydian style”. To allow for this Wilson accessed the original multitracks to lift out some of the sound effects to create crossfades between the tracks. This approach may or may not prove controversial, but at least they are doing something a bit different.

8-Tracks will be released on black vinyl, blue vinyl and CD (but not 8-track cartridge, unless we have a ‘surprise’ D2C product coming later) on 5 June 2026, via Sony.

Disc three opens in style with Shirley Bassey’s Bond theme ‘Diamonds Are Forever’, and embraces an easy listening vibe with numbers from Andy Williams and Tony Christie (the original release of ‘Is This The Way To) Amarillo’). Soul is represented by The Stylistics, Diana Ross, Jackson 5, The O’Jays and more. The CD closes with Sly & The Family Stone’s ‘Family Affair’.

The fourth and final CD offers more Elton, Rod Stewart (via his vocal on Python Lee Jackson’s ‘In A Broken Dream – featured memorably on the soundtrack to Lars Von Trier’s 1996 film Breaking The Waves), Sweet, Elvis and Don McLean and features The New Seekers’ ‘I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing’.

Everything But The Girl / Eden and Amplified Heart CD

Everything But The Girl offer expanded CD editions of two key albums – their 1984 debut Eden and the million-selling Amplified Heart, from a decade later.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience / Winterland

Winterland was an 8LP vinyl box set back in 2011 and is now reduced to this single LP ‘highlights’ edition. BBC Sessions gets the same treatment.

Ryuichi Sakamoto / Opus

A “definitive” collection of work by the late, great Ryuichi Sakamoto. This anthology brings together iconic film scores, Yellow Magic Orchestra classics, and more. Featured tracks include ‘Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence’, ‘Andata’, and ‘Aqua’, alongside never-before-released pieces including ‘for Jóhann’ (a tribute to Jóhann Jóhannsson), ‘BB’ (dedicated to Bernardo Bertolucci), and ‘20180219’ (featuring prepared piano). Also available as a 4LP vinyl box, these are far from cheap but the presentation sounds good. The vinyl box comes in a “hand-crafted textured slipcase” with elegant black foil detailing while the CD edition is a deluxe six-panel digipak constructed from premium black stock with black foil stamping and silver text.

t.A.T.u. / All The Things She Said (12-inch picture disc)

Number one in the UK 24 years ago, t.A.T.u.’s All The Things She Said is reissued (and remixed) for this 12-inch picture disc. If you are wondering why, it’s because the song features in the HBO Max TV Series Heated Rivalry.

Pink Floyd / Live from the Los Angeles Sports Arena

Pink Floyd’s 1975 concert at the Los Angeles Sports Arena was first released on blu-ray last year on the Wish You Were Here 50th anniversary reissue. It’s soon to come out on vinyl, via the previously announced 4LP set for Record Store Day but is now confirmed as a 2CD set in late April.

The performance was never professionally recorded so the origins of this recording is via the late bootlegger Mike “Mike the Mic” Millard, whose tapes from concerts across Los Angeles in the 1970s became renowned for their surprisingly clear sound quality. To conceal his recording equipment from venue security, Millard would often pretend to be disabled and arrive to concerts in a wheelchair.

The performance opened with early versions of songs initially titled as ‘Raving and Drooling’ and ‘You’ve Got To Be Crazy’, which later evolved into ‘Sheep’ and ‘Dogs’ which ended up on Animals. ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ in its two parts bookended another new composition, ‘Have A Cigar’. Following these new compositions, the band performed The Dark Side of The Moon in full, with ‘Echoes’ as an encore.

Meticulously restored and remastered by Steven Wilson, this is as good as it’s going to get in terms of a live recording of Pink Floyd’s 1975 tour.

The 4LP clear vinyl edition is released on Record Store Day on 18 April, and the 2CD edition is released six days later on 24 April 2026.

Chris Squire / Fish Out Of Water 50th anniversary

SDE Shop quick pre-order

Yes founder and bassist Chris Squire’s 1975 album Fish Out Of Water is being reissued for its 50th anniversary as a CD+blu-ray set which includes a new Dolby Atmos Mix.

Recorded in the late spring and summer of 1975 while Yes was on hiatus (as members recorded their respective solo albums), Fish Out Of Water was essentially a collaboration between Chris Squire and his friend Andrew Pryce Jackman, an arranger who had been a member of The Syn, Squire’s band prior to the formation of Yes.

The album features contributions from former Yes drummer Bill Bruford, Yes keyboard player Patrick Moraz and noted musicians Mel Collins and Jimmy Hastings. The album was a Top 30 chart hit in the UK and also made the Top 75 in the US, going on to sell nearly 500,000 copies worldwide.

For this 50th anniversary CD+blu-ray set, engineer Stephen W Tayler has created new Dolby Atmos, 5.1 Surround Sound and Stereo mixes. The Blu-ray Disc also includes the Fish Out Of Water promotional film featuring ‘Hold Out Your Hand’ and ‘You By My Side’ and an album audio commentary from Chris Squire himself, recorded in 2006.

Fish Out Of Water is released on 10 July 2026 (was 26 June) via Esoteric. You can support SDE by pre-ordering via the SDE shop using this link or the button below.

Paul McCartney / The Boys of Dungeon Lane

As revealed by SDE yesterday, Paul McCartney’s new album is called The Boys of Dungeon Lane and it will be released at the end of May.

The album is described as “a collection of rare and revealing glimpses into memories never-before shared” and the album features 14 new songs and finds Paul “writing with rare openness about his childhood in post-war Liverpool, the resilience of his parents, and early adventures shared with George Harrison and John Lennon long before the world had ever heard of Beatlemania”. The first single is called acoustic number called, ‘Days We Left Behind’ which Paul describes as a “memory song”.

Both CD and vinyl editions feature embossed cover artwork and the vinyl includes a 12-page lyric booklet (obviously the CD will have a booklet too). There may well be more to come (!) but at the time of writing formats are black vinyl and indie pink vinyl (the latter is available to pre-order from the SDE shop using this link or the button below).

Update: HMV has red vinyl, McCartney’s store has green, Rough Trade: gold and Amazon has white vinyl variants.

The Boys of Dungeon Lane will be released on 29 May 2026, via EMI.

Hear Tori Amos’ new single, ‘Shush’

Tori Amos has made available a second song from her forthcoming album In Times Of Dragons.

The track is called ‘Shush’ and you can listen to it, below. It forms part of the highly conceptual album and presents a fictionalised version of Tori who marries a power-hungry “lizard demon” billionaire, who symbolises unchecked power, concentrated wealth, and political corruption.

“He represents what we’re dealing with right now,” Amos says. “He sees congressmen, senators, and even probably presidents, as people who answer to him and other billionaires, who don’t think you and I should vote. He’s trying to develop the kind of feudal system we had hundreds of years ago. But it doesn’t look like it once did. We don’t look like we’re in the trenches, in the muck. We have all the cool, digital devices now. So it looks different. But it has the same philosophy.”

‘Shush’ is the opening song on the 17-track album, and the full tracklisting was finally made available last week (scroll down). In Times Of Dragons is available across a number of formats, including an SDE exclusive blu-ray (for which the pre-order window has now closed).

Since it was officially announced in January, a signed CD edition has turned up on Amazon in the UK so that is one that is well worth snagging. We should have some contingency stock of the blu-ray around the week of release.

In Times Of Dragons will be released on 1 May 2026 via Decca.
