David Bowie / Young Americans 50th anniversary reissue
Vinyl-only formats
David Bowie’s 1975 album Young Americans will be reissued on two vinyl formats in March to mark the 50th anniversary of the album.
Bowie’s self-styled ‘Plastic Soul’ album was produced by Tony Visconti and features the first of his two US number ones, ‘Fame’, and the brilliant title track, a song I personally never tire of hearing. Collaborators included Luther Vandross (‘Fascination’ is a reworking of Vandross’ song ‘Funky Music (Is a Part of Me)’) and John Lennon (who co-wrote ‘Fame’ and plays guitar on Bowie’s cover of The Beatles’ Across The Universe).
The album is reissued as a half-speed mastered vinyl edition (cut by John Webber at AIR Studios) and as a vinyl picture disc. There’s no CD edition even though the CD+DVD edition from 2007 (which features a 5.1 mix) has been out of print for ages.
The UK pricing is absolutely ridiculous. £45 on Warner Records’ own Dig! store for the single picture disc LP, while the same product is a shade over £20 (or $24.98) on Rhino.com. Simply not good enough. Also, how long do we have to wait to see album outtake ‘After Today’ included on a Young Americans reissue? Half a century is not long enough, clearly…
Young Americans will be reissued on 7 March 2025 which is exactly 50 years since the original release.
