Depeche Mode / 101 box set

Five-disc set includes restored HD version

In early December, Depeche Mode will release a deluxe box set edition of their classic 101 documentary/album from 1989. This reissue sees the original film “meticulously upgraded” using 4k scans of the original film reels to create a new HD edition.

The 101 documentary was co-directed by acclaimed husband-and-wife filmmaking team D.A. Pennebaker (Dont Look Back) and Chris Hegedus (The War Room) with creative input from Depeche Mode, who’d held an exclusive contest for fans offering an appearance in a Depeche Mode movie as the prize. The narrative follows the contest winners as they travel across America to attend Depeche Mode’s landmark Rose Bowl concert and is an early example of ‘reality tv’ which is now commonplace.

The box set includes the blu-ray, two DVDs and two CDs. The CDs feature the original 20-track album release of 101 while the two DVDs in the set contain the original extras from the 2003 DVD release of 101 (commentaries, interviews etc.). The DVD set doesn’t include the three bonus performances, but does include the upgraded version of the film. The standalone blu-ray does include the three bonus performances.

In addition, the box set contains a 40-page photo-book, a 20″ x 30″ replica of the the original US theatrical release movie poster; a 16-page Anton Corbijn Photo Mode book as featured in the original album release and a download card providing access to 4K downloads of the film and bonus performances plus 24-bit audio files.

Although the blu-ray and DVD will have 5.1 mixes, there is no sign of audio-only surround sound (as issued on the SACD in 2004) and of course the 4K is only download-only, which is a bit disappointing.

The 101 box will be released on 3 December 2021. Standalone blu-ray or a two-DVD sets are also available.
