Gillan / Gillan 1978-1982

A new box set of the full Gillan discography will be released in the new year. Gillan 1978-1982 is a 7CD box set compiling each studio album, alongside B-sides, outtakes, and rarities.

Formed in 1978 by Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan, Gillan found success in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) scene. The band’s first album, 1978’s Gillan (also known as the Japanese Album, due to its initial release in Japan only), marked a departure from Ian Gillan’s earlier releases with the jazz fusion of the Ian Gillan Band to a heavier sound. 1979’s Mr Universe capitalised on this, combining both hard rock and the emerging sound of NWOBHM.

The following year saw Glory Road reach the top five in the UK album chart and 1981’s follow-up, Future Shock, reached number two on the UK album chart and would be the peak of Gillan’s success. Guitarist Bernie Tormé would subsequently leave, replaced by future Iron Maiden guitarist Janick Gers and the band would release the live/studio double album Double Trouble at the end of 1981, featuring live recordings from the band’s performance at Reading Festival that same year. Their final album, Magic, wasreleased in September of 1982.

This CD box contains each album with associated B-Sides and stand-alone singles as bonus tracks, all remastered from the original tapes, “where possible”. It is the first time all Gillan albums and rarities are featured together, for a total of 94 tracks. The 7CD set comes in seven-inch packaging and contains a 32-page booklet, featuring a new interview with Rich Davenport.
