The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society super deluxe box

Enormous 11-disc super deluxe edition • 2018 remasters • 174 tracks

The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society 50th anniversary super deluxe

BMG will issue a 50th anniversary edition of The Kinks‘ 1968 album The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society in October.

The band’s sixth studio album was originally issued in November ’68 and would be the last album by the original line-up (bass player Pete Quaife departed in early 1969). Describin the album today, Davies says it’s about “the ending of a time personally for me in my life. In my imaginary village. It’s the end of our innocence, our youth. Some people are quite old but in the Village Green, you’re never allowed to grow up. I feel the project itself as part of a life cycle.”

The super deluxe edition is a eleven-disc set, no less. It contains a double vinyl LP with stereo and mono versions (both 2018 remasters) and a 12-track ‘Continental’ (Swedish) version on vinyl.

In addition there are five CDs of content as described below:

  • CD1:
2018 Stereo Remaster, from the original HD tape transfers + bonus tracks of singles, B sides and original album related tracks
  • CD2:
2018 Mono Remaster, from the original HD tape transfers + bonus tracks of singles, B sides and original album related tracks
  • CD3:
Village Green Sessions – Including alternate versions, mixes and backing tracks, many previously unreleased
  • CD4:
Village Green At The BBC – TV performance track audio and band interviews, many previously unreleased
  • CD5:
Preservation, Sessions, Live & Demos – including mid 70s recordings, previously unreleased home demos, Ray Davies live in Denmark 2010 and unreleased track ‘Time Song’.

The three remaining discs are a trio of replica seven-inch singles, reproduced in picture sleeves. They are:

  • Days / She’s Got Everything (1968)
  • Starstruck / Picture Book (1968)
  • The Village Green Preservation Society / Do You Remember Walter? (1969)

There are 174 tracks in total (see full track listing at the bottom of this post) with “many previously unreleased tracks and versions”, including the previously unreleased track ‘Time Song’ which was performed by The Kinks at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in January 1973. This track was Davies’ commentary on the UK joining what was then called The Common Market. Ray says “This song was recorded a few weeks later but never made the final cut on the Preservation Act I album. Oddly enough, the song seems quite poignant and appropriate to release at this time in British history, and like Europe itself the track is a rough mix which still has to be finessed.” This track features in the box set and the 2CD edition.

The box set comes with a 52-page hardcover book with extensive sleeve notes and new band interviews and includes essays by Pete Townshend and other writers. It boasts “special packaging” with debossed box cover, foil & metallic text, linen cloth finish and a ‘bespoke accessories holder’.

It also comes with what we like to call ‘stuff’… broadly categorised as ‘memorabilia’. This includes a poster of Village Green LP inner gatefold; Empire Liverpool 1968 tour poster; glossy 10” x 8” photos from Hampstead Heath 1968 photoshoot; colour press photo with reproduced band signatures; Bournemouth 1968 gig ticket; PYE Records promo card; ‘Days’ sheet music etc.

The other three physical editions are a 2CD deluxe ‘art of the album’ which features the stereo and mono remasters and bonus tracks (49 tracks in total), plus single disc vinyl and CD versions with just the stereo remaster.

The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society 50th anniversary editions are out on 26 October 2018. The UK box set price of £94 seems pretty good for all that content and with VAT deducted US fans can import this from the UK for almost exactly $100 + shipping (it’s not listed in the US at the moment).

£51 for the big VGPS box on amazon US

Filippo Rostoni

I have received today the box missing photo after my very recent request. They were so kind to send it via registered (!) delivery from UK to Switzwerland, with a note of excuse and also adding 2 cool Kinks promo badges for these reissues. mounted on a small custom carton. Really classy folks, my compliments.

Stephen Muzyka

Received the missing photo today. The best box set of this year is now complete. Well done to BMG for recognising and sorting the issue. Have a good Christmas everyone.

Liberteenager

Can anyone supply a BMG email address to request an autographed glossy? Would greatly appreciate it!

Stephen Muzyka

Hi, you can contact them on info.uk@bmg.com. They will forward your request to the relevant people so leave them your address as they will be posting out copies of the missing photo to all those who have requested it.
Hope this helps.

Ray

Have requested the missing photo twice from BMG. Still no response other then them acknowledging my email

Stephen Muzyka

You should receive the photo eventually. They will not send you a follow-up email to inform you when they’ve posted it but it should arrive. Mine took several weeks as I remember. Similar to the replacement Blu ray for the Immersion Dark Side of the Moon, which took nearly a month but finally arrived a couple of days ago.

Hope everything turns out ok.

Ray

Hey Steve…….thanks for suppling the BMG address. I finally received the missing photo. It took a couple of months but at least the VGPS box is now complete. Thanks again.

Sean mason

I’ve received 2 boxsets now from record store and both with dinked corners and now they can’t supply as it’s sold out ! Why should I except it with damaged corners

Francis S. DiMenno

Many of these outtakes were released on the vinyl-only Great Lost Kinks album of 1973 and will not be new to Kinks fans lucky enough to own that album.

Leemer

I wish they would have done a Sgt. Pepper remix on this. They probably don’t have the elements to do that though.

Wayne Klein

Many of the multi-tracks for the final versions were tossed in the 1970’s by Pye.

Chopdog

Listening to it right now. It’s odd – Wonderboy seems to have lost its vocal track way down – you hardly hear when he starts singing. The mono is SO much cleaner and clear.

John Nagle

Received my super deluxe box set in the mail today and it looks and sounds great! Only problem, the photo of the band with reproduced signatures was not included. Did anyone else have theirs turn up with a missing photo? Also, the Time Song 7” single was not included and I’m pretty certain I was among the first 1000 orders.

Pete

Mine is missing the “autographed” photo too. I only got 5 glossy photos – in the contents it’s listed as 6 but the photo only seems to show 5 so maybe “6” was a typo.

Has anyone found a technique for getting the CDs back onto the annoying rubbery…. nipples?

Rob

Hello,
The autographed photo is missing from my set too. I have emailed BMG. Thought it must just be my set. So, I emailed BMG to see if they could post the photo to me.
I agree about the foam CD holders. They are tricky. The best technique I’ve found is to hook the CD over the left side of the foam and push the CD to right. The foam will come up through the hole.

Paul English

The rubber CD holders are so annoying! Also missing the signed photo….

Stephen Muzyka

No signed photo in mine either. It appears looking at the contents layout that this should be the sixth glossy photo, (the other 5 are shown on the left).
Hopefully BMG will put this right at a later date. That quibble aside this is undoubtedly one of the best box sets I’ve ever seen, and an example of how to treat a classic (are you listening ABKCO?).

As for the CD holder, the best way I’ve found is to get one side in and then rotate the CD until the whole of the centre ‘nipply thing’ pops up. Not sure if this is beneficial to the CD’s themselves though. My advice would be to rip all the audio into a laptop and burn a safety copy of each CD for listening and leave the proper ones where they are until such times as they’re needed again.

E. J. Grevink

Yup, same. Not THAT photograph. Planning to write BMG as per the mailaddress in the back of the booklet. Elmar

Richard

Yep, missing from mine too. Have contacted BMG to see what they say. That aside, it’s one of the best box sets that I’ve parted with cash for.

Tak from Tokyo

Signed photo missing too.!!

Thijs Scheepers

Mine is missing the “autographed” photo too. An interesting box with fine music. Espacially the bonus tracks. Fan from the beginning, the ultimate sixties band.

John Sakamoto

I received a response from BMG U.K. today. They say a “production issue” is behind the missing photo.

“We’re currently printing out replacement photos and will post you one as soon as possible.”

Peter

Turned up today, just an amazing collection, just awesome.

At £94 pre-order on Amazon.uk, fantastic value

Thank you for the tip off Paul

This is how to do box sets. Up there with the Led Zep Stuff.

Jürgen

Got the super deluxe box today, first impression is fantastic, just listening to the stereo LP

Sandy

Exciting times – SDE Kinks , Hendrix , Beatles , Dylan…keep them coming please !

Wayne Klein

I’m assuming Amazon Uk will honor the preorder drop in price to $94 U.S. anyone had any other experience with this? I purchased the week it was up so naturally I paid a higher price.

Jeff G.

The way I understand it, they give you the lowest price they list it at between the time you place the order and the day they ship it to you.

Phil Cohen

People who ordered the boxed set through The Kinks’ online store are being supplied an incomlete boxed set (minus one of the 7″ vinyl singles) with the promise that that the single will follow within 2 weeks. Apparently, there was some fault in that vinyl single and it is being re-manufactured.
This brings into question how orders placed with Amazon.co.uk will be handled and whether Amazon will actually send the boxed sets to customers on the release date.

Mark Borland

It’s the Time Song exclusive single that’s not shipping not one of the 3 in the box.

J. Kane

I have the 3CD version which, after reflection on the 50th anniversary box set, will do me. I am just not into vinyl, I know that is heresy to some people but there you go. I switched to CDs a long long time ago. If this was a 5 CD set I would buy it no problem but definitely not a fan of CD/vinyl combos.

Mark Borland

Why don’t you sell the vinyl?

MARK JACKSON

J.Kane…My sentiments exactly. I have the 3 x cd version. All I want are the extra tracks on this 5 x cd version….I don’t care for the vinyl resurrection, infact I hope it dies a death real soon.

Robert Meighan

i am sure this box set was under a 100 pounds when i pre ordered it from amazon uk ?

David

Massive price-drop on the Australian Amazon site! $39.99AUD!
https://www.amazon.com.au/Kinks-Village-Green-Preservation-Society/dp/B07GGSB3YK

Brice

Some errors on the photos. The photo of the band sitting in the grass. On the book, Pete is on the right and on the photography, he is on the left. Same with the photography with autographs….Mick should be on the left, the photo is not on the right way…Where is the job ?

Brice

The music is of course the most important but I wrote to BMG to told them all the errors with the photos in the Boxset ! The color photo with the band sitting in the grass(in the book, it’s ok but on the photo Pete is on the left !), and the photo with the autographs (Mick must be on the right !)….Hope there aren’t others errors like this in the book !

Bruce Kelso

this is a incredible box set from of the greatest era of rock music ,1968. once you enter the village green you are living a care free life style. trains ,boats , old friends remembered ,lazy days watching the clouds go by and a quick nip at the local pub . with all the stress today the village green is a nice place to visit.this record has been in my collection since 1968 in both mono/stereo versions and the swedish version to. the field pictures show the group on a happy setting which i was told by dave davies in conversation with him that it was lovely day out with friends.a magnificent package. long live the kinks .

Stephen Muzyka

+1

Mathew Lauren

Seeing all these comments about lost tapes from Kinks early releases, really saddens me; but at least this is something.

Not for nuthin,’ The Kinks “Word of Mouth” (1985) was a pretty big hit, as an album in America with singles, MTV vid hits, and a great tour here in 1985. I can speak first-hand about this, having seen them @ DAR Constitution Hall, D.C., 1985. Considered one of their finest latter albums, and with the multi’s intact, how ‘bout some cd/dvd or blu 5.1 SDE-love here?

Reinhold

Will this box set also be available in Germany via amazon.de or jpc.de?

Tomas Carlsson

Does anyone know in how many copies this deluxe boxset will be released?

Stephen Muzyka

Can’t wait for this. I already own the 3cd version but I admit I’m a sucker for ‘alternate’ mixes and the like. They’ve certainly pulled out all the stops for this so fair play to the compilers. This is how a box set should be done.
Mind you, with the new Bowie box set also due in October, as well as rumours of the White Album, Beggars Banquet and The Who Sell Out receiving the deluxe treatment, I pray for a good Lottery win.

Huw

I was excited about this but I was really hoping they’d give it a stereo remix. The new mix of Johnny Thunder from the last issue of this album was tantalising – hearing the whole album sounding that full would’ve been amazing.

Phil Cohen

Unfortunately, in the early 1970’s Pye Records threw away 98% of The Kinks’ 1960’s multitrack tapes. There will never be stereo versions of those 1964-1966 songs that weren’t mixed for stereo at the time. And even if there could be stereo remixes of the group’s 2nd & 3rd albums and the 1964-1966 non-L.P. singles, there is a high likelyhood that they would be missing certain parts that were added live during mono mixdown. Check out the stereo version of “Dedicated Follower of Fashion” which lacks the answering “Oh Yes He Is!” background vocals. Adding parts live-during-mono-mixdown was typical of the techniques used by producer Shel Talmy at the time. It’s amazing how much Kinks vault material that compiler Andrew Sandoval has been able to find (on existing mixes and acetates) over the years.

Keith Coleman

Can somebody rob a bank for me or is there a charity I could subscribe to for music lovers down on their luck? I treasured a second hand copy of this album for years and years through the dark days when you could not get any 60s physical product in any format, bar endless compilations.

Andy

A bit unread in The Kinks archive footage but does the “Colour Me Pop” footage visually still exist? I imagine not as it would have been included. So it’s an off air recording? Any ideas?

It’s so fortunate that programmers from the series by Small Faces and The Move exist but I sense The Kinks weren’t so lucky?

Mark Borland

Colour Me Pop visual footage no longer exists….

The audio should be a huge upgrade from the off air recordings on the BBC box.

Edwin Muller

Even most of the songs are probably lost. They tried to find the missing ones for this box.

Ian Burgess

A good price for what is included, but value for money? As a cd listener I would never play the vinyl, so the premium payment is for a trio of picture sleeves to look at once in a while. Surely vinyl loveres will also be less than satisfiesd as there are three cd’s worth of material not on their preferred / chosen format. As others have mentioned the previous 3 cd reissue has also covered a fair portion of the previously rare material.

5 cd set with book, which is what I’d be buying really… £60 ish

Disappointingly exciting once again as it’s a mixed format release duplicating so many tracks.

Jeff

It’s glorious this even exists or for that matter is cared about enough for such an exhaustive effort to be made to immortalize it’s creation. If it’s a financial issue that pisses you off about it you would be wise to keep that to yourself as we all know it will be easily available on the torrent and streaming sites. It’s not as if you’ll never hear it if you don’t empty your pockets. So the argument that one or two new songs will force you to shell out all of this cash is not a good one. So please stop bitching and just be happy it’s available. 10 years ago you would have only dreamed you’d get the chance to see something like this released.

Let’s not mention the BBC wiping things, at the age of 47 it still sends a chill down my spine, though you can totally understand why it happened. Arguably, this is how each and every album in existence should be issued, it looks like perfection, even if it has taken a little while!

korova

Like the Joe Strummer box set I wonder if we will see any lower prices on the Amazon Europe sites if it appears on them. I that moment the box set is not listed but the other versions are on Italy, Spain and France.

William Darlington

How many more deluxe versions of this will we see? There have been 1-, 2- and 3-CD sets, with all sorts of bonus tracks and unreleased stuff and I bought a couple. Now we have to get this, for one completely unreleased song. I could live without the endless parade of alternate takes and mixes of released songs and the pointless vinyl, so I won’t be contributing, yet again, to Mr Davies’ pension fund.

Mylene

How much on this is actually new? If I’ve got the 3CD version and the BBC box is anything here that I really need? Time for a long think?

Mark Borland

Majority of CD3 and 5 is unreleased, also upgraded mono sources for some tracks and for the Colour Me Pop audio.

Phil Cohen

Thanks for the links. Ordered from Amazon.co.uk

Sean

Can’t really argue with most of the opinions here, but, if I don’t buy The Village Green Super Deluxe, I’ll never buy a Super Deluxe!

Stephen

I already have the 3-CD Village Green set from a while back. In terms of unreleased material, what does this offer that that doesn’t have? Hoping a super-fan can summarise so I don’t have to undertake a tiresome track hy track comparison. Thanks!

Seth Hollander

I had a moment in my life recently to do the “tiresome track hy track comparison”.
If you buy the new 2 CD Deluxe and own the old 3 CD Deluxe, you have all the tracks from the first 2 CDs of the superdeluxe, except “Last of the Steam-Powered Trains (With Alternate Ending)” and “She’s Got Everything (Single Mix)”* plus 13 of the 57 music tracks by The Kinks** from the three supplemental CDs in the new superdeluxe.
* released on the Face To Face Deluxe.
** didn’t count 5 non-music tracks and 8 Ray-without-The-Kinks tracks.
I live in a small apartment and don’t need anymore boxes/books/papers or slabs of vinyl.
So I’m skipping 44 alternate versions/demos/BBC recordings/backing tracks and saving $140 by only buying the new 2disc edition to place by my old 3disc edition.
If I didn’t have the 3discer I would be compelled to find room in my apartment (and money in my bank) for all the stuff that comes with those 5 CDs….

BDobbins

Thanks for taking the time to do work that out Seth! As a happy owner of the 3CD set, I’ll just grab the affordable 2CD set to supplement my collection.

Steve j

Paul thanks for the excellent information on the Kinks box set promptly ordered

StevieB

174 tracks!!!…makes the 140 track John Lennon Imagine Ultimate Box Set announced earlier today look positively meagre in comparison.

Kevin Wollenweber

Oh boy, this really does look like a must get, although I’ going to wait and see if it comes to Amazon USA before I pull the switch; this is not a complaint, just an observation but, should this thing sell out very, very quickly, and I believe it will, please issue an alternate CD version that features the album proper in mono and stereo with the bonus tracks and perhaps a third and fourth disk that features that Swedish track list. Otherwise, this is phenominal!!

Michael

A truly wonderful album getting what looks like a fabulous repackage. Will it be the last Kinks set I purchase? I wonder. I almost hope so.

Some observations:

Based on current prices – £94 on Amazon v £137 (incl p&p) on the Official site. I personally cannot justify £43 for the exclusive 7″. Others might, if so enjoy it.

Which catalogues have been reworked more than the Kinks since the advent of cd? The Small Faces I would suggest but it’s a smaller catalogue. I am sure there are others. They have had a pretty good go with the Beach Boys.

As far as the Kinks go I have shelled out my hard earned cash on…

90’s remasters
00/10’s double and triple (Village Green) cds
Picture Box
Anthology box set
At the BBC box set

Hence my comment hoping this might be the last one. Of course all purchases were my choice and some were discounted, or in sales.

I am not a fan of cd/vinyl combos but will on occasion buy them. Beach Boys Smile, and the ongoing Ramones sets spring to mind. Personally, for the content, this one at £94 seems reasonable although I would have liked the option of just the 5cds. Of course that would not necessarily meet the marketing concept of “The Art of the Album”, and may result in the big box remaining on the shelf.

Mark Borland

You’re obviously not a fan of the Doors if you think the Kinks remasters are excessive….

colm47

I was just about to post re The Doors Mark, you beat me to it!
Being a fan of both bands, I have quite a few duplicates of LPs and CDs

Michael

Actually I do like the Doors and have many of their sets and all of the core albums in at least 2 forms, but found the recent cd/vinyl releases had insufficient additional material to attract me at the price. There is only so much money to spend.

mark turrell

i think this is very good value up against some of the other big boys box sets we’ve had. Plenty of material, formats for analog and digital fans. for all of those people moaning about the price, how many of you have new cars in the driveway, or a big flatscreen telly, or spend thousands on a holiday abroad. I drive a crappy old car, and vacation very little, and the money i would’ve paid every month, i spend on records. It’s all about your priorities people.

David M

It’s about the same as a “cheap” ticket to see Paul McCartney or The Rolling Stones live.

Harald Stahl

One more reason to buy this Box !

andrew R

Hear hear see my comment further down

Fantailfan

While it is on my top 57 (unlike the white album), I’ve never been able to justify the purchase of any SDEs, not even Fish Out of Water (my mileage does vary). Why couldn’t they have delayed the release until my birthday, other than it’s a national holiday here?

Anyway, long live The Kinks and long live SDE.

The Golden Age Of The Kinks

Why bring the White Album into it?

Fantailfan

Both were released on my eighth birthday.

Jeff G.

Well, I usually pass on all these big ticket reissues, even though I love solo Macca and the Beatles and Dylan some of the other big names that tend to release these sorts of packages, but I think I may have to go for this one. 3 LPs, 5 CDs and 3 7″s for US $103 (what it comes to on Amazon UK as of right now) is a pretty good price really, and certainly, VGPS is an all-time top 10 album for me.

Robert B

Some are squawking about the price but for what is offered its not a bad deal especially if you love the album. Who knows it may go down a bit

Gansbarre

I like this logic Paul. I’m going to try it on the wife after I’ve plunked down ducats for this box, the Bowie Box, and potentially White Album…

David M

Exactly! I am trying to buy less of them, but then spend twice as much on a visit to the supermarket!

Sylent Syd

Between this and the rumoured White Album box set, consider me broke to end 2018

andrew R

Moan moan about format, too expensive etc .A generation ago this stuff wouldn’t have
been thought worthy of release let alone this level of attention. There is a very reasonable 2 cd for those who don’t want to pay but some people would deny the super deluxe because
it’s only “for the rich” . People who collect at this level aren’t “rich” they are passionate
and are generally poor because of their “passion” .Hope that clears that up for the people who don’t understand what the “superdeluxe ” in this sites title means !

RJS

The comments on this site would be pointless and very boring if it was just endless “Love the format, love the price, ordered!”.

peter chrisp

You have summed it up well Paul the amount of time and effort you put into each deluxe super deluxe edition of an anniversary box set, new release is superb. Everytime i jump onto your web-page & see what’s due & the various formats it’s amazing and my initial reaction is the usual Tull pun “My God” that is massive keep up the great work!

RJS

“I feel the project itself as part of a life cycle.”

More like an endless recycle! I bought a two or three disc edition of the album years ago and that’s more than enough for me.

Marshall Gooch

Just ordered, $104 all told to USA. THOUGHT about holding out, but then figured if I waited too long on ghost would go out of print, while the likely White Album SDE would be produced in much greater quantities (the Pepper one is still around) and therefore could be waited on. That said, RSD may be light this fall!

Vinyl Mighty

I just did the same…104 dollars with shipping to USA. Oddly enough, buying in the USA from the USA to a US address is over 161 dollars. How’s that work?

Blakey

Trust those clowns at the BBC to have wiped the Kinks ‘Colour Me Pop’ footage. Thank God the Small Faces one survived… Hope it’s true about a Ronnie Lane box set.

Mister Stick

Madman says, “Can someone shed some light on the “Swedish/Continental” version?” I guess I got my Kinks History Degree from a shady online college, because I was curious of that, too. I found that the LP configuration listed above was released in not just Sweden, but France, Norway, Italy, and New Zealand, ahead of other places, including Britain. Apparently, this was going to be the same tracklist for the UK, but Ray changed his mind at the last moment. There was also another tracklist assembled for the US (under a different title, apparently in fear that Americans would not understand the ‘Village Green’ – and those fears make good sense, believe me), but they ditched that too. It would have been nice to see that released here. Regardless, this box looks great to me. Some “paper plate” stuff, like sheet music – there’s a new one – but that’s thoroughly outweighed by the music.
