Five Star / The Remixes 1984-1991

Five Star / The Remix Anthology 1984-1991

Later this month Cherry Pop will reissue two albums from Five Star, the eighties British group likened to the Jackson Five, whose time in the spotlight was rather fleeting. Five Star (1990) and Shine (1991) are the albums in question and neither secured an official UK release (on new label Epic), which only served to demonstrate how their popularity had fallen quickly from the high point of 1986’s Silk and Steel, which spawned an incredible five UK top ten singles (a sixth reached no. 15).

Although neither of these reissues is particularly recommended, what is of interest is a Remix Anthology (aka The Remixes 1984-1991), which is due for release on 18 February 2013. This is a 2CD set of reworkings, with a heavy contribution from the ubiquitous remixer of that era, Shep Pettibone.

The selection includes dub mixes, seven-inch and extended remixes and covers all the singles that you would expect. Although 26 remixes of Five Star 45s may be more than most people really want or need (particularly the later ones), at £9 it is cheap enough ignore large chunks and still feel like good value.

A Concert For Kirsty MacColl

A Concert For Kirsty MacColl

Following on from their excellent studio album reissue campaign in October 2012, Salvo Music will release A Concert For Kirsty MacColl on 18 February 2013.

This CD release captures a concert performance from 2010, when fans and friends packed London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire to hear Kirsty’s fellow artists celebrate 12 of her greatest songs. Performers such as Ellie Goulding, Amy MacDonald, Billy Bragg, Andrea Corr and Alison Moyet helped to celebrate the life and music of Kirsty.

Should this selection of live covers fail to rock your boat, then Salvo will also be releasing a brand new career-spanning Kirsty greatest hits. A New England: The Very Best Of Kirsty MacColl is expected to be released in early spring 2013.

Japanese CD of the day / The Other Side Of The Moon: The Cardigans

The Cardigans / The Other Side Of The Moon
The Other Side Of The Moon was released in Japan and Australia only

Released in 1999, The Other Side Of The Moon, is a Japan/Australia b-side/rarities compilation from Swedish band The Cardigans. The moon reference is in relation to their 1996 album First Band On The Moon, which contained Lovefool, something of a breakthrough hit for the band.

Nasty Sun Beam, Iron Man (First Try), Blah Blah Blah, Losers (First Try) and Country Hell were all included as extra tracks or b-sides on Moon singles and all feature on this CD. Most of the other tracks are from the Emmerdale/Life album single releases (Rise and Shine, Sick and Tired, Carnival) including their version of Thin Lizzy’s The Boys Are Back In Town. The compilation ends with the Life instrumental medley – lounge stylee – that is Cocktail Party Bloody Cocktail Party.

It’s a superb compilation, with excellent design and photography. It’s not cheap to pick up, but worth seeking out.

A cheaper alternative is to seek out the 2CD version of Best Of The Cardigans, which contains a bonus disc that covers some of the same ground (not all) with the advantage of including b-sides from the later albums, including the excellent Long Gone Before Daylight and Super Extra Gravity.

The Other Side Of The Moon track listing

  • “War (First Try)”– 4:09 [from the single “My Favourite Game”]
  • “I Figured Out” – 2:05 [from the single “Black Letter Day”]
  • “Plain Parade” – 3:31 [from the single “Sick And Tired”]

2012 RECAP/ Duran Duran: A Diamond in the Mind

Duran Duran / A Diamond In The Mind Live In Concert
Duran Duran photographed by Stephanie Pistel

We love Duran Duran. They are a fantastic band. They’ve forgotten more about being ‘pop stars’ than most new bands will ever learn.

Earlier this year we reviewed the live DVD/Blu-ray A Diamond In The Mind and introduced it with a quick career summary for the uninitiated (surely not many?).

Quote: “Nick Rhodes spends almost the entire concert frowning behind his keyboard, a study of concentration, as if someone has to take this pop concert malarkey seriously, while the rest of the band move around having fun..”

SuperDeluxeEdition / 2012 Highlights: Interviews

Although we enjoying reviewing reissues and box sets, we also love chatting to artists about their work. Here’s some of our highlights from this year:

Nik Kershaw / Human Racing 2CD Reissue / superdeluxeedition interviewWe chatted to Nik Kershaw back in March about the Human Racing reissue. He was very open and entertaining about those early days…

Nik Kershaw:it really wasn’t until I stood on stage on the first night of the tour that I found out who was buying my records (laughs). It was a hell of a shock, it really was!

Read the full interview here.

Stephen Street and MorrisseyStephen Street talked to us about his work on Morrissey‘s Viva Hate and was unable to hide his irritation at Mozza’s fiddling with the album, removing tracks and adding a demo.

Stephen Street: “I know he’s going to be upset over my comments about the reissue, but what can I do?”.

Read the full interview here.

We tried to persuade World Party‘s Karl Wallinger to release some ‘deluxe’ editions of his albums when we chatted to him in June, but he was having none of it…

Karl Wallinger: ” I don’t like it when you go to buy a CD and it’s got five other tracks at the end that are basically rubbish versions of other tracks on the album. I hate that.”

Read the full interview here.

Win a signed copy of Swing Out Sister's It's Better To TravelAlso in June, we took an entertaining trip down memory lane, with a modest Swing Out Sister as they remembered their debut album It’s Better To Travel.

Corinne Drewery: “We just didn’t know what we were doing…”

Mark King Interview / Level 42 and Running In The FamilyFinally, Mark King reminisced about the commercial success of Level 42 in the mid-eighties and reflected on how ‘Boon’ Gould handled the pressure different to himself…

Mark King: “…he was really going through the wringer. So much so, that three months later he left the band!”
