FIRST PICTURES: Small Faces / “Here Come The Nice” Immediate Years box

front

Charly Records’ Small Faces box set Here Come The Nice is out at the end of this month and we can bring you some exclusive photos of the package.

Subtitled The Immediate Years Box Set 1967-1969, this lavish Small Faces box celebrates the band’s 1960s career on Andrew Loog Oldham’s Immediate Records label.

This set features every worldwide hit single, A & B side plus EPs and rare and previously unreleased material, unheard recording sessions from Olympic, IBC & Trident Studios, outtakes, early mixes, alternate versions and live material. It has been years in the making, and series producer Rob Caiger’s notes (in the book) on how they tracked the original tapes down is very much a roller coaster story featuring reels thrown in skips and a worldwide hunt from original UK masters!

Shelf Assessment: The Beatles

shelf_2

Unlike MP3s which can float above your head in a ‘cloud’, or can be buried deep in the recesses of your computer’s hard drive, physical product needs a physical place to live. For most of us that means the humble shelf.

It’s certainly true that no one has really come up with a better idea than ‘shelves’ when it comes to CDs, but the music box set has sometimes proved a troublesome companion in terms of storage. Try putting your Complete Smiths box (the big one) on a shelf and you’ll see what we mean. The other things shelves do is expose inconsistency with presentation. The text on spines should read top down, not the other way around. Why is it so annoying in a series of CD reissues when something bucks the trend? A logo which sits five millimetres higher than all the other logos, a typeface that doesn’t conform. That kind of thing can drive you to distraction. Sure, there are more important things to worry about, but whoever said collecting special edition music releases and re-buying product you probably already own was a pastime governed by logic?

WIN a 50 quid voucher to spend on deluxe editions and box sets

shop_voucher

Next month sees the launch of ShopSuperDeluxe, a new online shop from the team behind SuperDeluxeEdition.

ShopSuperDeluxe aims to offer you an interesting selection of music releases (both brand new and used) that will pique your interest. Some will be current releases, others may be out of print or rare sets that we’ve managed to secure. The selection will always include a healthy selection of Super Deluxe box sets, but things will go in and out of stock regularly, so it will be worth checking back often.

The new store won’t be competing with Amazon. The aim isn’t to bring you an endless choice of products, but rather to offer you a curated selection of releases that we know you will enjoy, namely music box sets, deluxe reissues, SACDs, blu-ray audio and vinyl LPs and collections. Stuff we know is pretty darn good. Chances are we’ve reviewed it here and have like what we’ve seen/heard. The store will also server our global audience, so worldwide shipping will be available.

Anyway, for the Facebook users amongst you, we’d love it if you could ‘like’ the new page we’ve set up. As an incentive you’ll be automatically entered into a draw to win a £50 voucher to spend in the forthcoming store. When it goes live we’ll announce the winner.

To make it really easy for you, all you need to do is click on the ‘like’ button right below this text, within the two horizontal lines – alternatively feel free to head over to Facebook.com/ShopSuperDeluxe.

Thanks! We look forward to going live, when you can ShopSuperDeluxe!

BOX

Monday 20 January 2014 (21 Jan in North America) sees the release of The Beatles U.S. Albums box set.

We have been previewing the packaging for the last few weeks (from a pre-production sample), but SuperDeluxeEdition is now in possession of a sealed retail box. We’d like to offer all our readers the chance to ask any questions they may have about this set by leaving a comment. You might want to know details about the packaging, or clarify which versions of tracks exist on the mono and stereo editions of each album. Fire away! We might not know everything but we’ll do our best to answer all questions.

FIRST PICTURES / The Beatles, Butchered! Yesterday And Today

All is revealed! The new “US Albums” CD of “Yesterday and Today”

Following on from our exclusive photos of The Beatles US Albums box set, we are working our way through the individual albums to show you exclusive pictures of the real CD reissue packaging. Today, the one you’ve all been waiting for, Yesterday And Today (aka “Yesterday”…and Today).

Released in 1966, The Beatles’ Capitol album Yesterday and Today is remembered primarily due to the controversy over the infamous ‘butcher’ cover. 750,000 copies with the Robert Whitaker photographed cover were pressed and then recalled after widespread offence was caused. A rather anodyne photo of the band next to a large trunk was the replacement.

DEAL OF THE DAY (again!): The Beatles / “The US Albums” box set

beatles2

With just over a week to go until the release date, Amazon UK have reduced The Beatles US Albums box set from £149.99 to £106 (correct at the time of writing).

If you were wavering over placing an order, will this near £50 reduction tempt you to pull the trigger, and place and order? If you do consider doing this, we’d recommend not hesitating for too long, because we can’t see it staying at this price for too long.

Marc Bolan and T Rex / “T Rex” and “A Beard Of Stars” deluxe editions

Universal Music are putting out two T Rex deluxe editions in March as companion releases to Demon Music’s Tanx and Zinc Alloy deluxe set.

A Beard Of Stars (1970) is the last album issued under the Tyrannosaurus Rex moniker and the new two-CD reissue features an enormous amount of additional material, including 16 previously unreleased demos and alternates on disc two. In total the original 14-track album is transformed into a mammoth 47 track exploration of the original material with John Peel sessions appended to the first disc.

This 3CD+2DVD set will be altogether a more comprehensive affair, with a greatest hits selection spanning the first two CDs and the third containing rarities (we are assured these selections won’t repeat what was on the Edsel reissues) and a brand new Live in Tokyo 2013 performance. Elvis Presley / Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis legacy edition

recorded live

Sony’s RCA/Legacy Recordings will reissue Elvis Presley‘s 1974 ‘homecoming’ live album Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis as an expanded two-CD Legacy Edition on 17 March 2014.

This 40th Anniversary release will feature tracks left off the original vinyl record, as well as a significant amount of previously unreleased material. The unissued work is largely made up of a complete “test run” of the live performance held two days before the actual concert. According to Sony this was recorded in mono and “drenched in the reverb Elvis preferred”!
