Robert Palmer/The Island Records Years 1974-1985CD
Robert Palmer’s nine albums for Island Records have been newly remastered and collected in The Island Records Years 1974-1985. Palmer never quite shook off his ladies man image (imprinted on many people’s minds thanks to the Addicted to Love video) but if you haven’t explored his 70s output (and indeed his early 80s diversion into new wave) you’ll find there’s much to enjoy.
Now That’s What I Call Music have revived the NOW Dance brand for a new compilation of classic 12-inch mixes from the 1980s called, simply, NOW Dance: The 80s. It’s available as a 4CD set and on 3LP coloured vinyl.
A Flock of Seagulls‘ eponymous debut album is reissued as a triple-CD deluxe edition, and on coloured vinyl. The 3CD edition includes B-sides, remixes and BBC Sessions.
Various Artists/British Mod Sounds of The 1960s Vol 2: The Freakbeat & Psych YearsCD, Vinyl
Acid Jazz Records and Modcast founder Eddie Piller curates a second volume of his British Mod Sounds of The 1960s compilation. Volume 2 is dubbed The Freakbeat & Psych Years although it could be called ‘What Mods did next’ as it traces the scene from early 1965 to the end of the 1960s.
Anyone who has been lucky enough to secure a copy of the SDE-exclusive Blu-ray of Orbital’sOptical Delusion (now sold out) should consider themselves very lucky, since as you will soon discover, this is an amazing album. The next best thing is probably to pick up the ‘bonus tracks’ CD edition on Amazon (all three bonus tracks are on the blu-ray in Dolby Atmos and Stereo!) or the 2LP white vinyl.
The always-good Ron Sexsmith issues his 17th studio album. Ron: “The Vivian Line is a rural route right near where we live in Stratford (Ontario). Whenever we have to get out of the city we jump on The Vivian Line and it dumps us out onto the highway. I wondered about the name when we first moved there and thought it was intriguing… it sort of represents escaping from our old life in Toronto to this new phase we’re in. And it’s also like a portal to my old life when I have to get back there. I recorded it with Brad Jones in Nashville and it’s a very lush sounding almost baroque pop record. The songs were mostly inspired by this stage in life that I find myself in and trying to figure it all out”.
Mötley Crüe / The Studio Albums 1981-1989 (5LP vinyl box)
Five Mötley Crüe albums on coloured/splatter vinyl. They are: Too Fast for Love, Shout at the Devil, Theatre of Pain, Girls, Girls, Girls and Dr. Feelgood. There’s a CD version too!

Also released this week: Marshall Crenshaw’s first and eponymous album, on Yep Roc, though with less bonus tracks than on Rhino’s 2000 reissue. Still a great record. Apparently, «Field day» will follow soon.
I think Paul needs to do a feature on what’s happening to cd prices. This is just another example. How can the price justifiably rise like that? There’s definitely a trend and it seems to be hitting the UK more than other countries looking at many of the price comparisons. Not good.
Been looking forward to the Robert Palmer set for some time….a much underrated singer in my view. Saw him play at Lancaster Uni in 1973 with Vinegar Joe. He and Elkie Brooks were amazing. Just heard that Trugoy from De La Soul has passed away. Very sad.
It’s really just a repackaging of the reissues Edsel did in 2013. I wish they could have added a bonus disc or two with single versions (many of which have never been in CD) and other remixes from this time period.
This week: Barclay James Harvest Once Again 3 CD + 1 Blu Ray Limited Box Set released by Esoteric Recordings / Cherry Red Records (Tonpool).
In the EU we have to wait to March 3 for the release of the Robert Palmer Box Set. I only have the Collected3 CD and the Gold2 CD and I don’t know any of the albums in the box set. Do I need the box set or are the two compilations that I already own enough? Please enlighten me…
The music is superb, especially the first half dozen albums. There are so many great songs that go beyond those greatest hits comps but last time Edsel released this catalogue they were very poorly mastered sounding like mp3’s.
Robert deserves a high quality mastering of his catalogue with unreleased extras and one was on the way but the project was aborted.
I have all the first edition CD’s and vinyl so I am waiting for the reviews before committing to this. If you don’t have any of the catalogue it might be better to pick up some used CD’s which can be found quite cheaply if the mastering on this set is as bad as last time.
Thank you for your reply Mr. Linky.
Which album is the most coherent, are there any concept albums, which albums do you recommend that I should listen to first?
Hi
Personally my favourite are Pressure Drop, Double Fun and Secrets. Pressure Drop has most of Little Feat as his band and has the feel of classic Feat. Secrets is slightly different feel, more new wave.
Clues is very good, more 80s synth/Gary Newman sound.
Robert was like a chameleon and changed styles often but whatever he did he managed to do it well.
Thanks again Mr. Linky
Okay, I’m gonna try the three that you mention, and then see if any reviews regarding the mastering of the box set comes out before the EU release date.
Thanks for the info on BJH. BJH seem underrepresented on SDE.com. They are certainly very niche but their Deluxe Editions are certainly worth a mention and are generally very good value with good content.
Not out this week but it quietly snuck onto listings at the end of last week – the early-2000s underrated indie band Athlete are putting out a 4CD 20th anniversary version of their debut album, Vehicles & Animals, out in April.
Very interested in the Robert Palmer set (thanks for showing him some love and respect, Mr Sinclair). Given the caution some people mentioned in the post about this release, I’ll be waiting for the reviews before shelling out for it.

That Flock Of Seagulls was £14.49 when i preordered it originally from Amazon now it’s jumped to £26.

Seems to be the only place charging this price £26.09…..weird
I think they’re just testing us! It’s back down to a more reasonable £16 now. Glad I got the pre-order at the £14.49 price though :)

Unthank : Smith release Nowhere and Everywhere on Friday; which is good as I get to see them perform that day, in RPM, Newcastle.

Robert Palmer – I’d suggest you could enlighten yourself by clicking on a pre-order link or read Paul”s original post to check out the tracklisting.
Thank you for the suggestion.

You are welcome Mr. Bruno.
Completely forgot that Orbital was due out this week. That’s a nice surprise! Can’t wait to explore the SDE bluray…
