AFTER The Dawn: As the curtain closes, what next for Kate Bush?

before_nightshot

“This is the last song tonight… and for a while!” Kate Bush, 1st October 2014

As Kate Bush left the stage last night to a rapturous standing ovation, her newly found ‘day job’ – and the routine that went with it – was over. The Before The Dawn extravaganza has come to an end after 22 shows and has been an unprecedented success. Fans, critics, fellow artists and musicians had run out of superlatives to describe the show which featured almost the whole of her 1985 album Hounds of Love (only The Big Sky and Mother Stands For Comfort weren’t played) and A Sky of Honey, the concept piece from the second side of 2005’s Aerial.

Let’s be honest, the last four years have been heaven for Kate Bush fans, with two albums in 2011 (Director’s Cut and 50 Words For Snow) and now this year a who-would-have-thought-it live residency at Hammersmith Odeon. The big question is will Kate ever perform live again? If it’s going to happen it certainly won’t be for a while, so in the meantime what is next for Kate? We examine the options…

abba_studioalbums

Having issued the 40th anniversary singles vinyl box, Universal Music/Polydor – in their role as custodians of the Polar Music catalogue – were always quite likely to put out an ABBA vinyl box set featuring the original studio albums, and at the end of next month that is exactly what is going to happen.

Tears For Fears / MASSIVE “Songs From The Big Chair” box set coming

TFF_BigChair_Box_Top

Universal team up with SuperDeluxeEdition.com to create stunning 6-disc super deluxe editon box set.

Roland Orzabal: (speaking to Paul Sinclair in 2014)

“We had let go of any Tears For Fears ideology, because it all came out in The Hurting. We were getting older, we had a bit of money, so life wasn’t that bad [laughs]. I mean, I bought my first house at 21. There wasn’t the ‘difficult second album syndrome’. It was an easy second album syndrome. You know, instead of being so het up by ‘the message’ we started to relax.”

Universal Music will reissue Tears For Fears second album Songs From The Big Chair in November as a six-disc super deluxe edition box set that, amongst all the bonus material, delivers every commercially issued b-side and remix of the era, previously unreleased radio sessions and early mixes and a high-resolution 5.1 surround sound mix courtesy or highly respected remixer and engineer Steven Wilson.

Suede / Dog Man Star 20: trailer

Dog Man Star is easily one of the best albums of the 1990s, and for this writer it surpassed anything that Blur came up with and eclipsed both of the first two celebrated Oasis records between which its release was sandwiched. In fact I’ve just remembered that I reviewed the album when the 2011 deluxe edition came out so head over here, for the full considered verdict.

ABBA / Gracias Por La Musica deluxe edition / CD+DVD

zbba

ABBA’s Spanish-language album, Gracias Por La Música, receives the Deluxe Edition treatment this November.

This could be perceived as slightly barrel-scraping but there’s a certain logic to the reissue. The original record was recorded in 1980 after the group had released a Spanish language version of their 1979 hit Chiquitita. That single had been an attempt to break into Latin America – a territory where ABBA were not enjoying the massive success they’d enjoyed everywhere else – and because it did very well the album was commissioned.

Inside The Pleasuredome / Trevor Horn Q&A and Frankie playback

invite

Legendary producer Trevor Horn delighted 60 lucky Frankie Goes To Hollywood fans last night by talking in detail about his work with the group in the very room where Relax and many other of the band’s hits were created.

Sarm Studios in West London was the venue for the special playback event which was hosted by Classic Album Sundays‘ Colleen Murphy. All four sides of Frankie’s 1984 debut album Welcome To The Pleasuredome were played (loudly) on an appropriately expensive turntable and hi-fi system after Trevor had been interviewed and entertained his audience with anecdotes and musical insights. We learned for example how third UK number one, The Power of Love, went from the key of E to F as a result of speeding up the track by a semitone and how Relax was changed key to E minor which in the words of Horn turned it into something “big and sad”.

Review: George Harrison / The Apple Years 1968-1975 box

GEORGE HARRISON’S APPLE YEARS BOX: FROM BRILLIANT, TO LESS THAN, AND OTHER.

…but moderately priced set should still appeal to Harrison devotees.

“Thirteen years after his death we have finally put the ‘ducks in a row’ and are proud to present to you, the listener, with his first six solo albums…dig it” Dhani Harrison, 2014

An argument with much merit can be made that of all the former Beatles’ solo work after the break up of the group, George Harrison produced the “best” single outing with All Things Must Pass in 1970, even though it was originally a three record set with considerable filler.
