In Salvo Music the ZTT archive appears to be in good hands and they have recently included Frankie rarities and unreleased material on their Art Of The 12inch compilations.

SuperDeluxeEdition: For the new reissues and the Blur 21 box, you were involved in the remastering of the Blur albums you worked on originally. How was the process of listening back to that material?

Stephen Street: It was a wonderful experience to be able to go back into Abbey Road and dig out the 1/2 inch mix tapes. Continue reading “Producer Stephen Street talks Blur”

Luke Haines / Outsider/In review

Luke Haines / Outsider/In

When The Auteurs nearly won the inaugural Mercury Music prize in with New Wave in 1993 (they came a close second to Suede’s debut) the band were a heartbeat away from ‘acceptance’, celebration and stickers on their album that read ‘winner’.

It’s probably a good thing for singer-songwriter Luke Haines that his band didn’t win – why would you want to be ‘pick of the week’ in Woolworth’s when your future discography will include ditties about child murder and a whole album devoted to a 1970s terrorist group?

 [best price].

Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols will now be issued as a Super Deluxe Edition on 24 September in the UK (likely 25th for US).

The original master tapes for the recording sessions in 1977 – thought to be lost for many years – have been used to create the content of this set. The tapes were apparently rediscovered during the album’s move from Virgin Records to Universal Music Catalogue in January 2012.

The tapes have been remastered, for the very first time, by Tim Young under direction from original producer Chris Thomas.

Overview of the contents:

Peter Gabriel / “So” reissue delayed

Peter Gabriel / So Super Deluxe EditionPeter Gabriel’s classic 1986 album So was due to be reissued on 17 September (18th in the US) as a Deluxe and Super Deluxe Edition but yesterday EMI told this blog that the release has been pushed back to ‘mid-October’.

Details have yet to emerge about the format and content of the Super Deluxe Edition, but at least the delay removes So from a very crowded marketplace on 17 September since Michael Jackson’s Bad, INXS’s Kick, the Sex Pistol’s Never Mind The Bollocks… are all due out in super deluxe format on that day.

The So Super Deluxe Edition was originally touted for spring 2012, before being pushed back to September. Gabriel originally asked for fans to help in December 2011 by sending in any scans of So-era photos and memorabilia.

Bowie / Anniversary picture disc

David Bowie / John I'm Only Dancing picture discEMI will release a 40th anniversary seven-inch picture disc edition of David Bowie‘s John I’m Only Dancing on 3 September 2012.

The 1972 song was originally a non-album single released after the Ziggy Stardust album. This 2012 vinyl reissue will feature the original single version backed with the so-called ‘sax’ version of the song which was a new recording made in 1973 during the Aladdin Sane album sessions. Bowie actually recorded the track a third time in 1974 which was appropriately named John I’m Only Dancing (Again). That version has regularly appeared as a bonus track on Young Americans with its radically different ‘plastic soul’ arrangement.

This release will be the second David Bowie picture disc in six months, following on from the Record Store Day issue of Starman in April 2012.

Blur / Under The Westway CD single

Blur / Under The WestwayBlur are set to release what is likely to be their last single on Monday 6 August, a week after the massive Blur 21 box comes out.

Under The Westway will be available as a seven-inch single (R 6873) with The Puritan as the B-side, but also, perhaps surprisingly, the song gets a CD single issue (CDR 6873) with the following track listing

  • 1. Under the Westway
  • 2. Under the Westway (Acoustic)
  • 3. Under the Westway (Instrumental)
  • 4. The Puritan
  • 5. The Puritan (Instrumental)

Under The Westway does feature in the Blur 21 box – it’s the last track on the fourth of the rarities CDs – but none of the others tracks on this physical release do, so fans may be keen to pick this up.

It is available exclusively from Blur’s website (limited to 5000).

Frankie Goes To Hollywood / Sexmix

Salvo Music continue to impress with their packaging. The new Frankie Goes To Hollywood 2CD Sexmix compilation (due 6 Aug) belies its budget price with a superbly designed set that pleasingly embraces Frankie design motifs of old, and underlines why physical packaging, at its best, continues to enhance the listening / purchasing experience.

All photos can be enlarged if you click on them.

Sparks / Extended The 12 Inch Mixes 1979-1984

Sparks Extended - The 12 Inch MixesSparks – brothers Ron and Russell Mael – are to release some of their best 12-inch versions in this new two-CD compilation due to be issued on 13 August 2012.

The pair found success in Europe in 1979 working with Italian-born producer Giorgio Moroder who, with Pete Bellotte, had turned US singer Donna Summer into a megastar with his hypnotically repetitive Eurodisco instrumental style. Beat The Clock and Tryouts For The Human Race were early results. They then moved on to register US dancefloor hits with the likes of I Predict and Cool Places – a collaboration with Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Gos.

This unique compilation chooses the best versions from the various labels Sparks inhabited and the countries in which they released their music between 1979 and 1984 and comes complete with a booklet with extensive liner notes written by journalist Michael Heatley.

On the same day Sparks: Shortcuts – The 7 Inch Mixes (1979-1984) will also be released.

PRE-ORDER Shortcuts and Extended.

Kate Bush ‘hits’ release with DVD rumoured for November

Kate Bush / The Whole Story RevisitedRumours abound that Kate Bush will release a 22-track expanded hits collection this November, possibly called Revisiting The Whole Story. The title is a reference to her one and only greatest hits compilation The Whole Story, a 12-track affair released in 1986 after her success with Hounds Of Love.

Release schedule website Pause&Play had the listing up for a short while yesterday, although it has since disappeared. They were detailing a 22-track two-CD release, and a special limited-edition version with a bonus DVD including 35 videos. A single was even mentioned – Running Up That Hill 2012.

Bronksi Beat / Communards reissues

Bronski Beat / Communards 2CD Deluxe EditionsBronski Beat‘s The Age Of Consent – an ’80s classic – has recently been reissued as a 2CD deluxe edition. In fact Edsel Records have traced a path through the early career of Jimmy Sommerville by also reissuing the two Communards studio albums at the same time and, in a second wave, (coming soon) – his first two solo albums.

All the releases come with an extra disc and bonus tracks are also appended to the albums on the first CD, allowing for a generous amount of extra material – remixes, B-sides, demos and live tracks.
