Depeche Mode / Spirit: The 12″ Singles

Depeche Mode’s 12-inch vinyl box sets continue in September with a box devoted to their 2017 studio album, Spirit.

There were three singles from the band’s 14th studio album. There were ‘Where’s the Revolution’, ‘Going Backwards’ and ‘Cover Me’.

Where’s The Revolution was originally released as a 5-track CD single and a 9-track 2 x 12″ vinyl. The latter is repeated for the first two records in this seven record box set. The same is true with ‘Going Backwards’ and ‘Cover Me’ – this box repeats the original 2 x 12″ releases but doesn’t include some remixes and radio versions from the CD singles.

The big draw for fans is the final disc which includes five songs from the ‘Highline Sessions’ recorded live in New York on 3 August 2016. It includes David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ and two songs from Spirit: ‘So Much Love and Poison Heart’.

But that aside, there is little to recommend or excite here and after six years, this now limping dog of a reissue campaign has come to the end of its life, with label and fans surely just going through the motions at this point.

Spirit: The 12″ Singles is packaged in the usual way and includes a poster and a download code. It’s released on 20 September 2024, via Sony.
