A Guided Tour of Madness / 3CD+DVD Box Set / Review

Madness / A Guided Tour of Madness / 3CD+DVD Box Set
A Box Full of Madness*

*May contain Nutty Boys

It was quite hard to avoid Madness in the 1980s. 14 of their first 16 singles hit the UK top ten. That meant constant appearances on Top of the Pops and regular airplay on BBC Radio One. In fact when they decided to call it a day in 1986 (before reforming in later years) with (Waiting For) The Ghost Train only one of their singles (Sweetest Girl) had failed to breach the UK’s top thirty.

Pointer Sisters / Break Out Deluxe Edition / Review

The Pointer Sisters’ finest achievement, celebrated with a deluxe edition offering both versions of the album

The Pointer Sisters had solid success in the 1970s with a soft rock audience. Although they continued to have hit singles for the next few years, they yearned for the really BIG hit album which had eluded them.

Who’s Afraid of the Art of Noise? / Deluxe CD+DVD Edition Review

Who's Afraid of the Art of Noise / Deluxe Edition Review
Who’s Afraid of the Art of Noise…

…Or should that be (Who’s Afraid?) Of the Art of Noise?

The distinction is subtle, but important. Issues such as these have kept me awake at night over the years. A similar preoccupation is “what happened to CTIS104?”, the ‘missing’ cassette single (“cassingle”) in a run which started with Into Battle with Art of Noise (CTIS100), took in Frankie singles such as Two Tribes (“Keep the Peace – a cassette celebration” CTIS103) and ended with Act’s Snobbery & Decay (Cabaret-Cassette CTIS25).

The Jesus and Mary Chain / Psychocandy / Deluxe Edition Review

The Jesus and Mary Chain / Psychocandy Deluxe Edition Review

Debut album from the contrary Scotsmen,
just don’t mention Joy Division

Boredom, dole, white noise, feedback, drugs, 20 minute sets, violence, and blasphemous song titles – not the stuff of  X-factor and American Idol – but all part of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s universe back in the early ’80s as they edged their way into the music business.
