Peter Gabriel / New Blood / New Blood Live In London / News
New Blood album cover

Peter Gabriel returns this autumn with both a new studio album and live album.

New Blood

Like last year’s Scratch My Back covers album, New Blood is a studio recording that sees Gabriel ‘re-imagining’ tracks with arrangements that dispense with guitars and drums and make heavy use of a 46-piece orchestra. Unlike Scratch My Back, New Blood uses Gabriel’s own songs as inspiration, with the track listing including classics such as Don’t Give Up, Mercy Street and Digging In The Dirt.

ZTT in their Element with new releases from Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Art of Noise and 808State

ZTT Logo
23/08/11 Update: Amazon have removed the listings for Sexmix and Art of the 12″ II. However these releases were confirmed to us by Ian Peel/ZTT independently of amazon’s listings. The release date is now TBA but the releases are confirmed.

ZTT are set to revisit the Frankie Goes to Hollywood archive once more before the year is out with Sexmix, a new compilation of remixes slated for release by Amazon.co.uk on 18 October 2011. Cover art and track listings are not yet available but this is looking like a collection of period remixes, most likely a mix of released and previously unreleased material. This CD will be number 22 in the ZTT/Salvo Element Series.

However, it has become apparent that they have no interest, or even more worryingly, are not able to answer some basic questions about the Pink Floyd archive or future release plans. These were questions from you the fans, submitted to EMI by superdeluxeedition.com.

Paul McCartney / McCartney Deluxe Edition / Review

Paul McCartney / McCartney Deluxe Edition / Review

Rock ‘n’ Roll Springtime: McCartney’s solo debut loses some of it’s charm in this disappointing Deluxe Edition

First the history. 1969 was a strange year for McCartney. The Beatles were falling apart (witness the grim Let It Be film footage from Twickenham Film Studios in January of that year) and he was being ostracised, thanks to the business arrangements of the band (US hot-shot Allen Klein was looking after John, George and Ringo’s finances, while Paul’s advice was coming from Lee Eastman, Linda’s dad). Despite this gloomy atmosphere some light was cast over these dark shadows when Paul got married and The Beatles managed to put some effort into the excellent swan song that was Abbey Road (released before the Let It Be album, in 1969).

David Bowie / Top 10: Lost Tracks

David Bowie / Sound+Vision Box Set / Rykodisc 1989
Despite multiple reissue campaigns, some David Bowie gems remain out of print – here’s ten of the best

A group of men walked past stacks of dusty master tapes gathering in hallways, and found the concrete cell they were looking for. They had wandered around a jail-like New Jersey storage facility (without climate control) anticipating this moment. The Holy Grail. For inside this bunker was David Bowie’s tape library (masters, multi-tracks etc) from the 1970s. If that wasn’t enough, it also contained original artwork, including the hand painted photo used on the cover of Ziggy Stardust.

Roger Waters The Collection Solo Albums Box Set Review
The grumpy one from Pink Floyd collects together his solo output in this great value box set

To celebrate his recent tour of The Wall, Sony have put together a box set collecting all four of Roger Waters’ solo albums, the live album In The Flesh and the opera Ça Ira.

They are all interesting, but none of his solo efforts have sold particularly well, so many will be unfamiliar with the music contained within. Let’s remind ourselves of Roger’s solo output:

Marvin Gaye / What’s Going On / 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition / Review

Marvin Gaye / What's Going On / 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition / Review
Marvin Gaye’s 1971 masterpiece celebrates another birthday and gets the Super Deluxe treatment

Like many truly great albums, Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On works on a few levels. As a straightforward R&B/pop record with it’s multi-layered vocals, string arrangements and smooth melodies, it’s a joy. But it also works as an intense personal meditation on spirituality, a man questioning the world in which he lives, looking for answers. This lyrical thoughtfulness has ensured the record endures, along with the remarkable fact that, 40 years on, the very concerns expressed in the songs – war, ecology, drug abuse, and poverty – are as relevant as ever.

Erasure / Wonderland and The Circus / 2CD+DVD Deluxe Editions

A flop and and a hit  – Erasure’s excellent first two records show the power of hit singles, if nothing else

It seems incredible listening to Erasure’s rather accomplished debut, Wonderland, to think that, back in 1986, it was a hit-free zone. Despite some excellent singles (Who Needs Love Like That, Heavenly ActionOh L’Amour) and the already solid pedigree of Vince Clarke (Yazoo, Depeche Mode), this was indeed the case. None of the three singles released made the UK top 40.
