Basia / Time And Tide Deluxe Edition

Polish-born Basia Trzetrzelewska (pronounced Basha Chechelevska) came to prominence as part of Matt Bianco in the early 1980s, and together with Mark Reilly and Danny White, contributed to the success of the band’s debut album Whose Side Are You On?

Basia and White both left Matt Bianco in 1985, and spent two years writing and recording her debut solo album Time And Tide. Released in 1987, the record was a success, especially in America where the title track was a top 30 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In the end, six singles were released from the 10-track LP (the CD had a bonus track) across various territories. This resulted in a plethora of remixes, seven-inch edits and the odd B-side. The record became a solid foundation for a successful solo career, and only two years later in 1989, Basia had similar success, particularly in the US, with her follow-up album London Warsaw New York.

A new deluxe reissue of Time And Tide is due for release in May 2013 by Cherry Red Records, and adds 19 bonus tracks to the original album, as issued on CD. See the track listing below.

Black / Wonderful Life 2CD Deluxe

Wonderful Life by Black (aka Colin Vearncombe) was originally released back in 1987 and was a significant success in the UK, yielding two top ten hit singles in the (reissued) title track and the single Sweetest Smile.

March 18th sees a deluxe reissue of this album in the form of a two-CD set, which comprises the full original album plus a second CD of 14 bonus tracks, including the original Ugly Man version of the Wonderful Life single plus a selection of B-sides and four songs from a 1986 Janice Long session. The album’s liner notes come complete with a specially commissioned interview with Colin.

Paul Hardcastle / Interview

Paul Hardcastle is a artist, songwriter and producer who has been making music for the last 30 years. He started out in the electro/dance sphere, and in recent decades, his musical journey has led to him more of an ambient, smooth jazz sound, evident on last year’s 19 Below Zero album.

There have been plenty of diversions and collaborations along the way, with Hardcastle often recording under aliases, to avoid contractual problems. He is best known outside the US for his enormous hit single 19, which reflected on the plight of veterans who served in the Vietnam War in the late 1960s. It would reach number one in 13 different countries around the world.

Demon Music Group through their Music Deluxe imprint, released Electrofied 80s: Essential Paul Hardcastle at the end of last month. This two-CD retrospective highlights some of Hardcastle’s best work with much focus on the music produced in the 1980s-era.

We recently caught up with Paul and spoke to him about this new release…

Paul Hardcastle: Demon Music contacted me to say they were interested in getting together a compilation of my old electro and ’80s type of stuff, and to be honest with you, I thought that’s would be great, because number one I’d have a CD of all my stuff (laughs).

Giorgio Moroder / On The Groove Train Volume 2: 1974 -1985

Repertoire records last year issued On The Groove Train Volume 1: 1975-1993, a collection of Giorgio Moroder collaborations and productions spanning two CDs.

A follow-up to this volume will be released on 4 March 2012 (UK) and On The Groove Train Volume 2: 1974 -1985 sees a further selection of rarities from the Italian producer, featuring work of artists such as Donna Summer, Chris Bennett and Roberta Kelly. The songs are culled from various international releases and take in A-sides, B-sides adn the occasional 12-inch versions.

FIRST PICTURES “Music & Photos” sets featuring Elvis, Dylan, Miles Davis

Sony have this week released their Music & Photos series. As previously announced these four sets – featuring Elvis, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis and Jeff Buckley – contain two CDs of music (CD+DVD for Buckley) and place them in a large format package which also contains ten quality photo prints of the artist in question.

The contents sit securely within a large gatefold wallet, which has similar dimensions to a vinyl album. The photo prints look ideal for framing, with no commercial logos or text on them whatsoever. More photos below:

Scared To Get Happy / The Story of Indie Pop / five CD set on the way

Cherry Red records narrate a ten-year story of indie pop with a new mammoth five-CD box Scared To Get Happy.

This set bookends the decade of the 1980s, and takes in tracks from the likes of The Pale Fountains, Lloyd Cole, Prefab Sprout, Everything But The Girl, The Wonder Stuff, The Brilliant Corners and The Vaselines amongst many, many others. In fact the label are still tweaking the track listing at the time of writing, so don’t be surprised to find a few final tweaks applied by the time this is released, which is expected to be June 2013.

As previously announced, Amazon.co.uk are offering an exclusive ‘deluxe’ edition of this compilation that comes with a bonus DVD containing 10 promo videos and five art cards. These cards have photos of Kirsty on one side and quotes from song lyrics on the other.

This attractive set is presented as a six-panel digi-pack, but does not come with a booklet of any description.

This nicely designed packaged comes with an extensive booklet and comprises two CDs of original tracks that had a Conny involvement (e.g. Le Sinistre – a track from the sessions of the Eurythmics first album In The Garden, which Plank co-produced), a further CD of remixes and rounds off with a disc featuring a previously unreleased live show featuring Plank, Dieter Möbius and Arno Steffen in Mexico 1986.

R.E.M. / Original Album Series (5CD set)

The critically acclaimed Warner albums from the early to mid-nineties are notable by their absence, but this value set could be a good catching up exercise for those who stopped buying R.E.M. records around the time of 1996’s New Adventures in Hi-Fi. Simple Minds are to release Celebrate – The Greatest Hits+, a new compilation on 25 March 2013.

This career overview will be available as a two-CD edition or a more comprehensive three-CD set. Both will include two new tracks: Broken Glass Park and Blood Diamonds.

To coincide with this release, the band will kick off a Greatest Hits UK tour on 28 March at the Belfast Waterfront

Depeche Mode / “Delta Machine” available as 2CD deluxe edition

Depeche Mode‘s new album Delta Machine is due out on 25 March, and as well as the standard release, their new label Columbia will be issuing a two-CD deluxe edition, which includes a 26-page photo booklet by Anton Corbjn, and four extra tracks on the bonus CD.

One of the four bonus tracks (All That’s Mine) is actually also the B-side to the forthcoming single Heaven, which is out a week earlier on 18 March. This single is being made available as a two-track CD single and a ‘maxi’ five-track CD single with four remixes offered in addition to the single version of Heaven.

Delta Machine will also be available as a 2xLP vinyl edition.

David Bowie / Aladdin Sane 40th anniversary remaster coming to CD

A 40th anniversary edition of David Bowie’s 1973 Aladdin Sane album will be reissued by Parlophone Label Group on 13 April 2013. It is being made available on CD and a version ‘Mastered for iTunes’.

The album – which features the hits The Jean Genie and Drive-In Saturday – was originally co-produced by Bowie and Ken Scott, and this reissue has been remastered by Ray Staff at London’s AIR Studios. Ray cut the original LP during his time at Trident Studios (his remaster of the Ziggy Stardust, reissued last year, was widely praised).

Disappointingly, this reissue looks to be a bare-bones remaster, with no bonus tracks or newly created surround sound mix. Perhaps this shouldn’t come as a complete surprise, because when Rykodisc reissued David Bowie’s RCA catalogue in 1990, Aladdin Sane was the only studio album to be re-released without any bonus material. The disliked 1999 remaster from EMI also came sans extras, and even the 30th 2CD set from 2003 had a bonus disc which contained a fair bit of previously released material (some from the Ryko’s 1989 Sound+Vision box set).

The recording of Aladdin Sane was rather squeezed into the schedules in late 1972 as Bowie continued with his Ziggy Stardust tour. The inclusion of a cover of The Rolling Stones’ Let’s Spend The Night Together and the re-recording of his old 1970 single The Prettiest Star suggests there was not an abundance of new material to record, which may go some way to explaining why Aladdin Sane is often bereft of bonus offerings, when reissued.

In the last few days Sony have announced that they are to cease production of their MiniDisc hardware, with the last device expected to be sold in March 2013.

First introduced back in 1992, the MiniDisc was touted as a replacement to the compact cassette tape. It certainly was similar in one respect – you needed to sit there in real-time as you ‘taped’ the CD or vinyl record of your choice onto the MiniDisc.

Fine Young Cannibals: deluxe edition track listings confirmed

Fine Young Cannibals / The Raw & the Cooked 2CD Deluxe Edition — Both FYC albums will be issued in 2CD deluxe editions

The much-delayed Fine Young Cannibals deluxe reissues from Edsel are finally going to be released on 18 February and SuperDeluxeEdition can confirm the full track listings.

The debut album from 1985 comes with three B-sides and in total nine remixes (all of Johnny Come Home and Suspicious Minds).

The Raw & The Cooked from 1988 includes the new tracks added to 1996’s The Finest collection, and a large selection of remixes. Neither of the remix albums previously issued – The Raw and the Remix or The Rare and the Remixed (from The Finest 2CD special edition) appear in their entirety, although it is obvious that by limiting this deluxe edition to two discs Edsel were never going to be able to include everything.
