Robert Palmer / Original Album Series (5CD)

There’s been little fanfare for this Robert Palmer Original Album Series, but this is a fine collection which includes all of his EMI-era albums (as diverse as ever) as well as The Power Station album. No bonus tracks. If you require those then opt for the Edsel ‘two-fers’ issued in 2013. Palmer is arguably the most under-appreciated pop/rock star Britain has ever produced – he needs the ‘John Martyn’ box set treatment.

Saturday Deluxe / 5 Sep 2015

After a short summer break Saturday Deluxe returns, picking up the on talking points in the past five days, in the world of box sets and deluxe reissues. This week a look at retail exclusives and why fans have not taken to the new Phil Collins reissues!

‘Exclusives’ – exciting or a rip-off?

Duran Duran excitedly announced yesterday on Facebook that their forthcoming album, Paper Gods, will be available from US retailer Target with “TWO bonus tracks not found any where else!” The two tracks in question are On Evil Beach and Cinderella Ride. Aside from the fact that this statement is inaccurate (On Evil Beach is on the Japanese edition) it was fairly predictable that there would be an US retail edition, since the band had delivered a similar exclusive of their last album All You Need Is Now via another US retailer, Best Buy.

You don’t need to be a superfan to have a desire to collect all the bonus tracks available when a new album is released, it’s just the same as the ‘old days’ and wanting to buy a single for a new B-side, but record labels aren’t making it very easy.

Van Morrison / Astral Weeks expanded and other news

astralweeks

There has been a fair bit of Van Morrison activity in the past week, with the news that Sony’s Legacy Recordings has acquired the rights to much of the man’s back catalogue and also that 1968’s Astral Weeks and 1970’s His Band and the Street Choir (both still owned by Warners and not part of the Sony deal) will be reissued and expanded by Rhino in October.

Second Hand News / August 2015

It’s that time of the month! SDE has been shopping for used records, largely in charity or thrift stores. Here’s what we’ve found…

Tina Turner / Tina Live (CD) – £2.49

This was a timely find, given the recent reissue of Tina Turner‘s Private Dancer. This was one of a series of EMI ‘Sound&Vision’ double-packs which gave you the concert on VHS and the ‘soundtrack’ to the concert on CD. The CD was exclusive, that was the real draw. Kate Bush’s Live at Hammersmith Odeon got a similar release. Anyway, the VHS for this had gone AWOL (not exactly a disaster) and as can be seen from the photos the CD itself has seen better days. Nevertheless this plays fine and most of the content isn’t on the new reissue!
