INXS / Kick 25 Super Deluxe Edition

INXS / Kick 25 / Super Deluxe Edition

As if it wasn’t enough to have Michael Jackson‘s Bad (Sony),  Peter Gabriel‘s So (EMI) and the Sex Pistol’s Never Mind The Bollocks.. box sets released on the same day (Sep 17th), Mercury Records have decided they want a piece of that particular action and have scheduled the long-rumoured INXS Kick Super Deluxe Edition for the very same Monday in September.

The Jam / “The Gift” Super Deluxe Edition due later this year

The Jam / The Gift Super Deluxe Edition Box Set

The GiftThe Jam‘s sixth and final studio album from 1982 is to be reissued later this year as a 30th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition and Universal Music are asking the fans to ‘get involved’.

They want you to submit any Gift-era images from the early ’80s you may be in possession of – tour tickets, photos, posters, or newspaper articles – you get the idea. The best one submitted will win one of the super deluxe sets signed by Paul Weller.

No details are currently available with regards to track listings, but the official photo above suggests a four-disc set with a book, wallet with photos, and a sturdy slip case.

The Gift Super Deluxe Edition will be released on 18 November in the UK.
More details when we have them. Should you have any images to submit, then you can do so here.

Peter Gabriel / Classic Albums: “So” coming to Blu-ray soon

Peter Gabriel / Classic Albums: SoWhile we wait for more details on the forthcoming Peter Gabriel So reissues (triple CD and Super Deluxe Edition is what we know so far) Eagle Rock Entertainment have announced that they are to release Peter Gabriel – Classic Albums: So on Blu-ray (and DVD). This release tells the story behind the making of Peter Gabriel’s 1986 album So, and is released on the same day as the album reissues, 18 September 2012.

The Classic Albums series are made with the full authorization and co-operation of the artists, and Classic Albums: So offers contributions from many of those involved in the making of the album and the landmark videos. Those featured include Peter Gabriel himself, co-producer Daniel Lanois, engineer Kevin Killen and musicians Jerry Marotta, Laurie Anderson, Tony Levin and Manu Katché and many more.

Although it has already been broadcast on UK TV, Classic Albums: So contains over 30 minutes of additional material not included in the broadcast version as bonus features.

Because this is getting a separate release, we can safely conclude that it will not feature as part of any of the Real World/EMI reissue packages in September.

The Blu-ray appears not to be listed on amazon as yet, but you can pre-order the DVD here.

ZTT admits Frankie “Sexmix” error

Frankie Goes To Hollywood / Sexmix compilationA few days ago ZTT records posted this note on their website about the forthcoming Frankie Goes To Hollywood Sexmix compilation:

“Please note that due to, as they say in the trade, a ‘technical f*** up’, mono masters were sent to press for CD1 tracks 01-05. One channel is mirrored on both sides.”

Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe / Barcelona: Special Edition

Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé / Barcelona: The Special Edition25 years after the original release, BarcelonaFreddie Mercury’s collaboration with Spanish operatic soprano Montserrat Caballé – is to have a special reissue on 3 September 2012 in an entirely newly orchestrated re-working.

The title was also a tribute to the home city of his beloved recording partner Montserrat Caballé with whom Freddie was captivated and had planned to perform the title song with at the opening of the 1992 Olympics opening ceremony. Sadly Mercury passed away eight months before this could happen.

However, the album did give Freddie Mercury a million selling record and posthumously, a chart topping single, when the song Barcelona was chosen by BBC TV as its title music to its coverage of the Olympics.

As well as a single CD release, a four-disc deluxe set will include a CD of early demos and a couple of alternative takes including Freddie’s original vocal performance of Exercises in Free Love which Montserrat heard in the garden of the Ritz and formed the seed of their collaboration.

Full symphonic orchestral score

Mercury recorded his original album almost entirely on keyboards. This 2012 special edition replaces his and co-writer and producer Mike Moran’s synthesised arrangements with a full symphonic orchestral score performed by the eighty piece FILMharmonic Orchestra, Prague, one of the most sought after recording orchestras in Central Europe, featuring leading members from Czech foremost orchestras (Czech Philharmonic, Prague Symphony).

In addition to the orchestral score performed other live instruments have been added for the first time. Naoko Kikuchi, one of the few koto players in the western world, flew especially to London to add the ancient oriental instrument to ‘La Japonaise’. Rufus Taylor, Queen band member Roger Taylor’s son, has replaced the drum machines on The Golden Boy and How Can Go On with live percussion. The latter song also boasts a new violin solo from classical violinist David Garrett joining Queen’s John Deacon’s original bass part.

Book and Blu-ray

Freddie Mercury / The Great Pretender DVD and Blu-rayArriving at the same time will be a major new documentary The Great Pretender (24 September) and a new book, Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender – A Life in Pictures (3 September). As well as containing captivating shots of Freddie and revealing the many sides of his colourful life, the book package also includes additional CD containing a rare interview by Mary Turner in which Mercury candidly discusses his life of stardom.

EMI offer the gift of Sound & Vision

Sight + Sound compilations due for release August 2012

EMI are set to release a series of budget ‘Sight & Sound‘ CD+DVD compilations on 13 August featuring big name artists such as Duran Duran, Culture Club and The Human League.

Available only in Europe, the two-disc sets feature some rather quirky ‘greatest hits’ selections on CD and abbreviated video career summaries on DVD.

Although by no means definitive, these compilations could offer something to appeal to collectors, with their single edits, occasional twelve-inch remixes and even the odd B-side, along with hit singles and favourite album tracks.

Being on the budget imprint EMI Gold, don’t expect 5.1 surround sound or flashy menus on the DVD element, but there are some solid offerings, even if none of the releases have any more than twelve videos. The Duran Duran DVD in particular is a good summary of the band up until 1985, and even includes the long uncensored version of Girls On Film.

These releases are all available for under £6 on amazon.co.uk. For those outside Europe this works out to be less than £5 without the VAT. In total eight of these compilations are being released: Duran Duran, Culture Club, The Human League, Marillion, The Stranglers, UB40, Thunder and Hot Chocolate.

Savage reissue not coming any time soon, says Dave Stewart

Eurythmics / Savage / 25th Anniversary Reissue
No reissue likely for Savage, any time soon

Ex-Eurythmic Dave Stewart has told SuperDeluxeEdition via twitter that we should forget about a 25th anniversary reissue of the Eurythmics‘ tour de force Savage.

The album was released in November 1987 and was on our ‘wishlist‘ for 2012 reissues last December. As can be seen from the twitter exchange below, Stewart describes the album as “strange and great” but when asked what the barriers are to getting an anniversary reissue released later this year, he responds with  “usual label stuff”.

Howe Gelb talks Tucson, staying alive and 25 years of Giant Sand

Howe Gelb of Giant Sand

It is a balmy evening in early May in North London. We have gathered at a very small bar to see US singer-songwriter Howe Gelb (from Tucson, Arizona) play some numbers. Gelb has led his ‘alt-country’ band Giant Sand through the last 25 years, recording a vast back catalogue of music. In fact, if you include Gelb’s many solo albums and side projects (Sno Angel, The Band of Blacky Ranchette, OP8) we are talking well over a staggering 40 albums in total.
