Peter Gabriel / Secret World Live / restored DVD and Blu-ray

Peter Gabriel / Secret World Live Restored Blu-ray and DVD
Cover to the previous DVD issue

Secret World Live, Peter Gabriel‘s concert film from 1994, is to be re-released on 2 July on DVD and Blu-ray.

Extensive work has been carried out to create the best possible quality – the original 16mm film negatives were repaired / cleaned and scanned (at cinema-spec super 2K) for mastering and restoration. Once scanned, the footage was digitally restored and graded to allow fans to view the concert as never been seen before.

The Secret World Live tour supported the release of Gabriel’s 1992’s Us album and featured elaborate presentation and choreography, with two stages joined by a narrow moving walkway. The line-up for this show featured Peter Gabriel (vocals, keyboards); Manu Katche (drums); Tony Levin (bass, vocals); David Rhodes (guitar, vocals); Jean Claude Naimro (keyboards, vocals); Paula Cole (vocals); Shankar (violin, vocals); Levon Minassian (doudouk) with guests Papa Wemba and Molokai.

Bonus Features will include Red Rain (not featured in the original film), a time-lapse film of the complex stage set up, plus a featurette on the making of the Secret World Live film including interviews and behind the scenes footage. Additionally, there’s a newly restored photo-montage slideshow to the remixed “Quiet” version of Steam.

George Harrison / Early Takes Vol 1

George Harrison / Early Takes Volume 1 ReviewEarly Takes Volume 1, as the title suggests, is a series of early versions (and demos) of familiar and perhaps not-so-familiar tracks by George Harrison. Some of the music was used in Martin Scorsese’s superb Harrison documentary Living In The Material World and the ten songs on this CD were first available as a bonus audio disc in the Living In The Material World Super Deluxe Box set (which also included the companion book as well as the DVD).

Clearly, anyone who spent £75 on that set to get the exclusive audio is likely to feel a little peeved that it is now available on its own for £9 or so. Them’s the breaks, as they say.

Whether Early Takes Volume 1 is simply an opportunity to sell these tracks to an audience with shallower pockets, or a serious attempt to start reissuing rare and unreleased material from Harrison’s archive is hard to determine. Certainly “Volume 1” suggests further releases, rather than just a one-off, but on the other hand this collection comprises only 30 minutes of music and contains six tracks from All Things Must Pass including two of Harrison’s best known songs outside The Beatles – My Sweet Lord and the title track All Things Must Pass. If you were planning a multi-volume archive set would you choose to put all those tracks on one CD?

Whatever the plan (if there is a plan) what is really disappointing is that no attempt has been made to inform the audience. None of the ten tracks have any annotation in terms of when they were recorded, where they were recorded, or who played on the tracks. The CD does not even come with an accompanying booklet. A curious decision especially since once you start listening to the songs those very questions enter your head.

[nggallery id=71]
So onto the music then. I will admit to having reservations about a whole album of intimate George-plus-acoustic home demos – but in the end this disc is much more satisfying than that, with many tracks having band arrangements – early loose exploratory takes that are full of fun, charm and energy. Awaiting On You All typifies this, with a great vocal performance and Woman Don’t You Cry For Me is much easier on the ears than the rather overblown 1976 master version from Thirty Three and 1/3.

That is one of the best aspects of this release. Without the production frills the tracks are to a certain degree shorn of their ‘identity’ and share the same space quite happily. The outstanding tracks are (inevitably) the demos of My Sweet Lord and All Things Must Pass. These versions are a natural progression from the very early solo outings that appeared on The Beatles’ Anthology 3 collection and are demos with guitar, bass, drums and simple arrangements. The sound quality is outstanding, and Giles Martin, who has produced this compilation describes the recordings as “multi-track live tapes” which has allowed Steve Rooke and his team at Abbey Road to master sympathetically.

This short, charming release is a delight and (as if it were needed) it showcases what a great talent George Harrison was. What may have started out as a box-set filling exercise has turned out to be a surprisingly essential individual release. Recommended.

The Christians 25th Anniversary 2CD Deluxe Edition / Review

The Christians / 2CD Deluxe Edition It is 25 years since Liverpool-based band The Christians released their self-titled debut album.

The album was a big success in the UK spawning five top 40 hit singles – with a sixth non-album single – a cover of The Isley Brothers classic Harvest For The World – becoming the band’s biggest hit, peaking at number eight in the UK charts in October 1988. That release marked the end of almost two years of singles, promotion and touring.

David Bowie: “I will not play these songs ever again.. “

David Bowie / Sound + Vision tour ticket22 years ago David Bowie dramatically ‘retired’ much of his classic back catalogue from live performance when he kicked-off his Sound + Vision tour in April 1990. I stood in a field in Milton Keynes to watch him play because I believed him… He went on to play many of them again in subsequent tours. Nice to see him get quite spiky with a journalist “Cashing in on my songs? That’s 25 years of my life!”

“Low” is highest on your David Bowie super deluxe reissue wish list

David Bowie's Low wins reissue poll on superdeluxeedition.com

David Bowie‘s 1977 ground-breaking album Low is the record that superdeluxeedition.com readers would most like to see reissued from his back catalogue in a deluxe or super deluxe edition format.

With Ziggy Stardust being re-released by EMI in June, our exclusive Facebook poll asked which record from Bowie’s classic 1970s era would you most like to see reissued next in a deluxe, expanded format. Anything released within the last five years was excluded, hence no Young Americans, David Bowie (aka Space Oddity), and Station To Station in the list.

The albums you picked from were (in order of release):

  • • The Man Who Sold The World (1970)
  • • Hunky Dory (1971)
  • • Aladdin Sane (1973)
  • • Diamond Dogs (1974)
  • • Low (1977)
  • • Heroes (1977)
  • • Lodger (1979)
  • • Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) (1980)
David Bowie / Hunky Dory
Hunky Dory beaten into second place by Low

Low came out top capturing 30.1 percent of the vote with possibly the ‘bookies’ favourite Hunky Dory (the 1971 classic that gave us Life On Mars and Changes) being pipped to the post, coming a very close second with 29.6 percent. 1980’s Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) – featuring number one hit Ashes To Ashes – completed the top three with almost 16 percent of you choosing the album that bookended a truly amazing ten-year artistic high for David Bowie.

1970’s The Man Who Sold The World missed out on a podium place taking fourth position (7.9 percent share) with Aladdin Sane and Heroes tied in fifth (5.1 percent share). Lodger wasn’t far behind with 4.6 percent of the vote, and perhaps surprisingly, Diamond Dogs is the album least of you want to see reissued, limping in in eighth position with its tail between its legs (just under 2 percent).

Low is widely regarded as one of Bowie’s most influential releases and saw him collaborate with Brian Eno on songwriting and arrangements, with Tony Visconti co-producing. It was the first in the ‘Berlin Trilogy’ – so-called because (some) recording and mixing were carried out at the now famous Hansa Studios, right by the Berlin Wall. Heroes and Lodger completed this trilogy. Sound And Vision was a surprise hit single from the record reaching number three in the UK charts.

FULL POLL RESULTS
The albums you most want to see reissued as deluxe or super deluxe edition (in order of popularity):

  • 2. Hunky Dory (1971)

Paul McCartney / Tug Of War / 30th Anniversary Edition

The album would go on to become a significant commercial and critical success.

“Nationwide” interview UK TV – prior to the release of the album Paul discusses getting older (grey hair!), the dissolution of Wings and John’s death.

ABBA / The Visitors CD+DVD Remastered Deluxe Edition

Any newcomer to ABBA’s final studio album – which is released this week as a deluxe CD+DVD edition – might be forgiven for thinking that they are listening to some kind of Kraftwerk/Vangelis hybrid as the title track starts, with its pulsing, ominous synths, Bladerunner twinkles, and processed vocals. But no, this is the same band that delivered Waterloo, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do and Fernando only a few years earlier.

Prince / Withdrawn Original Album Series Box Set / Exclusive photos

Prince / Original Album Series box setBack in March Warner Bros. Records were due to bring out a five-disc Original Album Series collection featuring Prince albums. This was to contain 1999, Purple Rain, Parade, Lovesexy and Diamonds and Pearls and should have been released on 26 March to at the same time as the Madonna Original Album Series box set.

Well something happened, and the box set was hastily withdrawn. Rumours suggested that Prince put the kibosh the on best-laid plans of Warner Bros.

Whatever the issue, we don’t want the unreleased status of this box to get in the way of giving you an exclusive look at the set, and so below is a photo gallery for your enjoyment.

It is of course a ‘budget’ release, so all in all pretty unremarkable. Simple card sleeves, unremastered audio, familiar discs used on previous releases. It should have been available for less than £10 but now we will have to wait and see if differences get resolved and this set sees a release later this year.
